I remember standing beside the Audi as it started one of the stages, and it made me step back involuntarily... it was absolutely awesome. And it made Rohrl a favourite driver of mine from then on! The Ulster was the most amazing event to spectate on back then, by watching only the top 10 cars through each stage we managed to see more than half the stages!!!
I think they did actually build it, it was for the next evolution of world rally, i think it was to be called Group S. I think Citroen built a prototype and also Porsche. From memory, Rohrl tested a 1000 bhp short wheel base S1 Quattro at Pikes Peek and said it was "undriveable"....
The most well-known group s car was the s4 based lancia, the pikes peak Quattro you speak of had 725 bhp and was built specifically for the pikes peak of 87, they returned in 88 but were beaten by ari vatanen in the 670 ish bhp Peugeot 405 t16 (was faster due to the immeasurably more advanced design purposefully designed for motorsport not adapted from a 4 door audi saloon from the 70s) The bx4tc was Citroens failed attempt at group b not a group s project A 1000bhp Quattro in 87 wouldn't be likely to get halfway up pikes peak before a rod went through the block. If it hadn't crashed first, or blown up the gearbox as it left the first hairpin just after the start. It might be possible to build one which could do it now with better materials to make engine and transmission components from, still it needs to not crash though. 1984 was the best pikes peak, Michelle mouton humiliating the Americans.
One of my fav events - thanks for posting - Rohrl in that sport was awsome.
1980's Tarmac rallying. What a beautiful noise.
The group b years are the best years of the WRC
Good footage
Audi was building a car on a space frame instead of a road car chassis,it was going to have 1000bhp swell but they didn't complete it
is that Jim rosental narrating?
how good was that? i remember spectating with my dad on this, the swb audi was incredible, scared the crap outta me!!
