  • Charles L. Larson of Denver purchased the Ida L and Dauntless mines, in 1933 for only $200. Charles and family were the last few prospects in the town of Ironton. This became evident to the Larsons' when in 1920, only 3 years after purchasing their mine; the Ironton post office closed. The next year the railway stopped all service to Ironton.
    Despite the closure of the post office, lack of rail service, and dwindling population Charles and his sons continued to build on their property for 4 years. During this time they constructed a small flotation mill, a bunkhouse, blacksmith shop, and a snow shed over the mine adit (or mine opening). The concrete foundation from the mill is still visible today, behind the adit. The mine eventually had a 180-foot tunnel and a two-compartment mine shaft. In 1937 the Larsons' shipped out 25-tons of concentrated ore at a rate of $100 per ton. Which would be $2,500, but in today's currency (that would be equal to $44,811. The same year the Larson mine began to turn a profit, Charles Larson passed away. Leaving behind his two sons Milton and Harry Larson; later the duo became locally known as “The Larson Brothers”...

      Howdy! I think I would have stayed, if I was in his circumstances; but am not sure for myself. His home is so nice! In-fact, with a little love it could still be inhabited or used as a living-museum (similar to your video about Mrs. Temples home). Thank you so much for stopping by and please stay safe!

    I just happened across this video today while digging a bit deeper for information on Milton Larson - unbelievably, I had somehow never put two and two together regarding the Larson Brothers mine; it had never occurred to me that this was the same Larson family. I love that you seem to have found Milton's old home (I think you're probably right - that looks like it's his house), and also that you touched on so much detailed history that I had never heard about. I've been to Ironton a few times, but have never taken that hike to his house. I definitely will now. I also like the detail you gave about that old bunkhouse, and the garage across the highway from it. From the bunkhouse, there's a short hike you can take to the Beaver-Belfast mine remnants - that's another very cool spot, you can see the trailhead and the logbook at 6:44

      Also, thank you for pointing out the trailhead! I can’t wait to head that way next time I am in the area.
      Thanks again and all the best!

    Milton Larson use to babysit me when I was a little girl in Ironton . I loved him to pieces he always had marshmallows for me and I’d take a nap on his bed while my dad James Dillon “ who was also a prospector” would go to whatever he had to do. I spent time in his house drank from his bucket of water. Wonderful wonderful memories! I loved to take my naps there on his old bed which had a pillow that as long as the bed!

    I think you are correct about which house was one of the last houses used in irontion. I have visted te town several times. If you look close at the house you will see it still has a piece of phone wire hanging on the side of it.

    • @DerelictDoug
      @DerelictDoug  3 роки тому

      Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. It is a great place to visit. I noticed the wire and porcelain on the outside. On the inside I saw the outline of where wires were laid on the ceiling (probably electrical lines). To my understanding he had a phone; however, I did not spot any telephone poles or lines. But the house tells a different story, I suppose the poles were removed or moved closer to the highway. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and all the best!

    Howdy folks, it's your old cowboy friend and visitor to Ironton. I heard about Milton and how he was on TV in the 60's, and ever since I heard about the town since June I wanted to see that episode. Thanks for showin' it. I also visited the Larson Bros. mine and all the buildings in Ironton such as the structures shown . I was actually in that building when I was there in late June this year I didn't know that was his house. It was haunting being in there and even more haunting now. Sorry for the rant, but I'm really grateful this video exists. I recommend that area of Co the San Juan Triangle because of it's wonderous beauty and ghost towns. I was amazed that over 10 buildings, some two stories still stand, there are entire mine complexes that are still there after 70 to 100 years! As a cowboy (singing cowboy) and someone so interested in the 1880's and '40s (partly because I lived during this time) it was a beautiful experience to walk the halls of these buildings. Thanks to the folks who made this and the ones who preserved these buildings!

      It is you ought to visit Tin Cup 🌹 only in the summer they close the road to it in Winter. Funny 😁 my husband were in Pitkin and Ohio City in February. The one gas station that they have, you have to call for someone to open it so you can get gas 🥰
