Exploring Apex Colorado - Western Mining History & Ghost Town

  • The former townsite of Apex Colorado is a ghost town that is nestled into a shadowy, narrow, and windswept valley. Only a few of the city's buildings remain today and few people come to visit. It’s best viewed after the winter snow melts off the roads and Pine Creek is flowing behind the former main street. April or May is an ideal time to avoid snow and for viewing wildflowers and wildlife.
    During my visit I spoke to an elderly gentleman who claimed to be the last resident of Apex; however, he also gave me instructions for the best places and methods for BigFoot viewing. He is the self-proclaimed mayor and sees himself as the watchmen of the land. Considering the source, he did have some interesting facts about modern-day Apex that were not cryptozoology related and was able to show me some of the gems in this hidden valley. Today I would like to share with you some of what he showed us during our journey while expanding upon the history of Gilpin County Colorado and Apex.
    When making your way up Apex Valley road and entering the townsite you will see very few buildings but will notice the tree line has been pushed further away from the road. Giving way to lush meadows and a view of Pine Creek. While it may not seem like it, you have entered the former city. With the exception of several buildings, the Meadows are all that marks the land where Apex Colorado stood. Today it can be hard to imagine over 1,000 settlers living in this valley. The valley is not very hospitable with the aid of modern technology, let alone over a century ago.

    The "Mayor" is a friend of mine so I wanted to mention that he's not as helpless as you depict. Once you get past the nonstop and often nonsensical chatter, it turns out that he is absolutely brilliant. There are many parts of this presentation that are definitely described as they would be viewed by an outsider. Once you live here a few years and make the adjustment to this style of living, you begin to develop a very different understanding of these hills. Most of the people who purchase homes up here are what we call 1-winter or 2-winter residents, because that's as long as they last. It turns out that urban conditioning makes most unprepared for life up here, even though we're only a half hour away from suburbia. You did an excellent job of researching the history of Apex. Even as a 16 year resident I learned a few new things from you.

    Nice film work!
    I am surprised that there are not more people residing in what appears to be a beautiful & secluded area.
    Well then, you have earned a new subscriber as I have explored, in my younger days, a few ghost towns all over CA & NV. and have been to the "most recent GT" - Portsmouth NC, Which the NPS took over 40 years ago after the last 2 residents, both in their 80's, were moved off onto the mainland of NC. (The island village is in great condition, and is open for visitors. It is the next island South of Hatteras Is. and North of the extremely surreal Core Banks (hundreds of abandoned vehicles stuck in the sand of the mosquito infested area). Apex reminds me of Bodie CA for some strange reason).

    That was very cool. It would be a nice place to stay for a vacation. A couple of those cabins looked like they might be livable.

    The mayor as you call him name's Billy Ward. I met him today. You can tell he's highly intelligent. Every time i interjected with a question he answered without a pause then went right back to his talk of working in labs at NIST in Boulder in the 50s or something. He knew everything. '95 miles of trails east of apex. 60 mi of trails west. Some fancy doctor from Boulder owns the small stone cabin on the meadow. Ricky is on the peak of Montana Mtn. He's currently landscaping. Blackhawk south, Tolland North.' Lol nice old man. I just thought he was drinking.

      @@DerelictDoug Thank you so very much. Yes I'm in the East In Memphis TN. I haven't been out west since my family trip back in 1973. Before my parents divorced. Yeah I did enjoy this. That old guy you talked to. The Mayor. I thought that was very funny. 😅. But he needs a nicer dog. What the heck does he need protection out there for? Hardly anyone knows it's there and the town is empty and falling apart. Lol

    Entering Apex? I thought I was entering The Twilight Zone! Thanks for another great video, Doug. You put a lot of research into these. And thanks for the comment about mental illness. That old timer has seen a lot and been through a lot and it takes a toll.

    Please consider making a video on cryptids of Colorado because it's almost always bigfoot, plus it's interesting to know what mysterious creatures Colorado holds

      @DerelictDoug  3 роки тому +1

      I absolutely love that idea! Some of my earliest videos were about cryptids from other areas of the country (links below). I can't believe that I have not considered doing one about Colorado cryptids. I already have one in mind, thank you for the idea and all the best!

    Good evening Doug didn't realize I'd missed these.. gotta love those interesting folk mate, you find alot around New Zealand I love talking to them even though at times I've looked for the exit door.. what an awesome back story an piece of history,.thanks for the tour I loved these old buildings..and it's strange to me not having your own cemetery..but such were the early days..much love to you and your family happy travels

    • @DerelictDoug
      @DerelictDoug  3 роки тому +1

      No worries at all, I am glad you made it non-the-less! After all we all have busy lives of our own. Hahaha "exit route" is the perfect way of putting it. In this instance I humored him and he was kind enough to show me some of the highlights of the area. But toward the end of our adventure I was trying to find a polite way to leave. If you like you can check out the cemetery that this town used in my "abandoned cemetery" video. Thank you for the kind words and we wish nothing but the best!
