As a civilian I find this incredibly embarrassing. My father was a very down to earth man and had been a career soldier, finishing his service as a WO1 like you. He served throughout WW2 from day one until the end. He didn`t come away with a bag full of medals and he almost never talked of the horrors that he saw, but he did talk of the lighter moments and of his career during peace time in Africa and the Middle East before the war. I`ve found this to be true of most genuine veterans. I have over the years heard some really tall tales from people who claim to have been in or have actually served. Even as a civilian I can tell when someone is lying and it doesn`t benefit anyone. Shame on the Copper who did this. How can he ever hold his head up in public again.

I'm a civilian but members of my family have served (none in the Falklands), that copper was just plain disrespectful and the lie that he was in the Falklands War is a disservice to those who fought, bled and even died so the Falklands could be liberated.

My great uncle Vic (now deseased) had a similar career by the sound of it. He was a Sgt Major, a career soldier and also served in North Africa and the Middle East, before, during, and after the war, he helped settle troubles in Palestine after WW2. He got shot on 2 occasions during the war, and one of the times was left for dead by German soldiers, but luckily around 24 hours later, the Allies came through the scene of the previous day's battle, and found him barely alive. He had been shot in the chest, so was a very lucky man. He went back out fighting as soon as he could too. A strange anecdote to this story, is that unfortunately, he died in hospital suffering from Dementia, or Altziemers, and although he couldn't recognise his wife or most family members, he had full on conversations, in Arabic, with the middle Eastern Doctors and nurses, who were treating him. This was in the mid 1990's when he died, and hadn't spoke a word of Arabic probably since the early 1950's, when he was still in Palestine. It is strange how the brain works, where you can't remember what you had for breakfast, or the name of your wife, but you can remember how to speak a fluent language, you learnt over 50 years ago, and haven't used in nearly 40 years.

He was on £176,550 a year and getting full pay throughout the investigation. From what I read discussions will be taking place next week to determine punishment if any but as a minimum he should lose his pension and be made to pay back his salary from when he was suspended. Not 100% sure it’s true but apparently his ex wife was the one who brought his lies and deceit to light. Could be prosecuted for misconduct in public office and fraud by false representation both of which can carry a jail sentence. My guess is nothing happens to him and he gets to keep his pay and pension !

@@nicolajohnson1887 Nicola, I only served only 6yrs but that included a tour in Belfast in 1977 few weeks after my 18th Birthday but despite some bum twitching moments saw it as a good character building experience.. but yeah, I've never really understood why someone would pretend to do a job requiring nothing but a torso, 2xlegs, 2xarms and a head. BAOR&N.IRELAND needed bodies so if you had em you were in. They've obviously got issues but their lies&deceit can really upset some ppl, its pretty easy to forget someone especially when they've pretended to be someone else for the last 13/14yrs.. People ask why as a known proper veteran like me failed to catch him out? Easy answer is it was other people in the group he told stories to and tbh I thought he was a f*n idiot, veteran or not and more or less ignored the fool, until I went on Facebook, joined a NI veterans group that required details of service in NI before you could join group. I told em the situation and asked best way to check if he served in NI as I knew he'd told my stepdaughter and some other young females he was haunted&traumatised after his best mate was cut in half by a belt fed M60 machine gun. This was final straw and I was advised to go online and apply to gain access to the still unpublished to the public Northern Ireland Roll of Honour, checked the unit he claimed to have served in(2Gren Guards) and saw 3 deaths from RTAs, a accidental shooting in loading bay (single shot not more) and 1 poor lad who was actually killed by the Provos but 4yrs after the Walt claimed he left the Army. Another mate read it and I sent him a text saying if he might have not been 100%truthful with us lot then not to bother answering text. He didnt so was outed to a few other groups of ppl he told same lies too& they dumped him too. No kidding he lost his entire social circle and any credibility in the Bristol area he might have possibly had.. You reap what you sow as somebody famous once said.. or maybe I just imagined it? Walts? I sh*t em, old mate of mines favourite comment on the subject sadly now passed away but not forgotten.. one last joke for y'all.. I'm Glaswegian so joke best said in that accent. I am a former police Firearms officer both in uniform CID/NCA and special branch. We had a sergeant firearms instructor who bragged about being ex SAS. Said that he had seen action in numerous places from Oman to Ulster. My ex service team mates suspected that he was a Walter. They asked him about dates and barracks which confirmed their suspicions. His service record was checked and confirmed he was indeed a liar as did an SAS RSM. Although we proved to our senior officers that this man was a fraud and not the full shilling he was allowed to continue. Strangely ex service and special branch officers we rostered to another instructor on Training/classification days. Walter was allowed to continued training the youngsters and told them some really fantastic stories about his exploits in 'The Regiment'.
As for medals I could wear both my farther and grandfathers, I didn't earn them so I don't.
My Police good conduct and long service medal remains unworn. They were given to Walter's as above and other similar individuals, so to me therefore it is meaningless.

The easy way to out a Walt is to ask for their service number. Not only do they need to know one, but the numbers too tell when you served. Your service number is part of your very DNA.
You need to do an immense amount of homework to be a credible Walt, to know about units, postings etc.
The Corps of Royal Engineers was huge, but everyone knows someone. Its amazing on my FB page the number of mutual friends I have, guys that I have never met know friends of mine.
You have Walters, who are totally fabricated. And Bloaters, who have served, but "enhanced" their CV to something a bit more interesting.
I served for 8 yrs, I don't have a medal to show for my time, it's a matter or circumstances. The years I served (between '83 - '91) there weren't any operational tours except NI. I don't feel the need to creat an alternative life for myself, I'm proud of what I did.

Spent a lot of time in NI (support helicopters) doing nothing more heroic than staggering back from the NAAFI at Aldergrove of an evening.
As for Walt's, they don't really bother me, bit sad really.
Ironically I live in Northamptonshire and what worries me more is the background checks of Police officers.

I’ve met a few Walts post service.
They’ve usually claimed to be either from the REs or from some lesser known infantry unit that was subsequently amalgamated.
The RE cover can work (for a while) because it was a huge corps with troops stationed all over the world. I only met lads I’d joined up with on two occasions in 14 years! (But we had an Army back then).
Unless you were infantry yourself (or had done a tour with them) chances are you wouldn’t know The Worcesters from The Sherwood Foresters, so that could also work for a while.
Another issue I’ve come across frequently when people learn I’m ex services is -
“I was going to join up but…………”.
In fact I saw a T shirt recently which had printed on it something like -
‘I was going to join the Army but…….. I did!’ 🤣
As far as offences committed by the W Anchor Chief Constable goes it might fall into the category of ‘using a false instrument’ if it has involved him achieving personal gain.
I’ll bet there are a few medal ribbons being unpicked around the country right now! 🤣🤣🤣
And well done Keith for taking action against that cadet officer 👏🏻

To be fair I would guess most of the "I was going to join but" crowd are people who did genuinely contemplate joining but decided not to and now recognise how good a career it could have been. I've never served but know people who did and I can see clearly they got a lot out of their time in.

He face dropped and I picked-up on this immediately. After asking him a few questions about Pass-Out dates, Units etc, we quickly established he'd been on a PRC (3-day Potential Recruits Course) but wasn't taken forward to attempt the Commando course / CTCRM. His wife had told me earlier that prior to being a fitness instructor, he'd been in the Royal Marines for 5-years!!!

He slipped up when he told me he was 19 when he served in the Falklands when previously he had told me he celebrated his 18th birthday on the way down. I asked him if he had any photos of his glittering military career and apparently he met a woman who ran a pub in Hereford which burned down and they all got destroyed in the fire.

My motivation to join was the Falklands War, and I have a lot of good friends who were on the Sir Galahad, so I take it personally with what that so-called police officer did. One close friend who served there cut his own throat at a war memorial where I live. And that muppet is walking around with a South Atlantic medal. Just subbed as, if honest, you remind me of my uncle, Michael Cox who ended up as a battery Sergeant Major in the Royal Artillery. His best friend was his senior, a RSM, called Gerry but not sure of his surname now. I believe they both left the army in about 1977 having served in Ireland, BAOR and Hong Kong among other places. I believe their regiment had FH70 field artillery and latterly then went over to self propelled artillery in the form of Abbots. My uncle died about 2000 and Gerry about 10 years ago. He used to come down with his wife and come round here with my mums sister, Michaels wife. Gerry was a giant of a man and I can still remember that he would don a pair of white gloves and run his fingers along the top of my door frame seeing how much dust he could find. I was in my early 40s by then but felt like a raw recruit and had such admiration for both of them. Although retired many years, when my uncle died, Gerry arranged for a bugler from the RA to come over from Germany and play the last post in full uniform as we all filed out of the service. He still had some welly and standing with the Regt even then I assume.

The rosette issued medal was for those who spent one day on the Falklands etc before 14th June 82.
The one without the rosette was for those who working up on Ascension Island, qualifying period was 30 days before 21 Ocober 82. The second one came about after an investigation, as lot of Veterans complained as the MoD hadn't declared when the campaign had ended, the MoD had an investigation into the case and found in the veterans favour.

The character you are referring to is Battery Sergeant-Major Tudor Bryn "Shut Up" Williams, a prominent figure in the beloved British television sitcom "It Ain't Half Hot Mum." This iconic role was masterfully brought to life by the talented actor Windsor Davies. The series, which captivated audiences from 1974 until 1981, chronicled the humorous and often chaotic adventures of a Royal Artillery Concert Party. These soldiers were stationed in India and Burma, navigating the complexities and absurdities of military life during the closing stages of World War II. Through its clever writing and memorable performances, "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" offered a unique blend of comedy and wartime drama, leaving a lasting impression on its viewers.

He was kicked out of the police. My favourite Walt story: I was walking past Charing Cross Police Station many years ago. I spotted a gent leaving said police station wearing a Brigade of Gurkhas tie and beret with a 7GR cap badge. My favourite uncle scored a double MC in Burma with said regiment, so I know them well, though I served with 3 Queen’s. I introduced myself to him and checked his medals: GC, MC, SAM, GSM (Borneo clasp) and a couple of others! I questioned the GC- my uncle’s batman scored the only 7GR VC, so, again, I am pretty well informed- he informed me that GC was from Borneo, MC from somewhere else. The only thing he had correct was that 7GR was 'Down South'. To have served in both Borneo- '60s and Falklands- '82, he would have been the oldest serving officer on the planet! Sadly, I didn’t confront him at the time or take his name, but called some friends in the Brigade who outed him instantly. One wonders what goes through their minds!

Didnt last long but will never forget being beasted around the quadrant, and made to lie in our backs and write the alphabet in the air with our feet. As soon as someones feet hit the floor we started again from "a".
My boy is in the RAF Regiment now, and there were no beastings or in the ear shouting during his basic.

I met several cadet instructors who loved strutting about, impressing the young cadets with stories they'd picked up in a mess somewhere, but never served. It's a bone of contention with adult instructors who did serve, when these buggers never served but like wearing the uniform.
Where we are, the ones running the county cadet force never did time and don't like using vets as instructors because they have medals and experience. Go in to enquire about joining, they soon showed you the door, one mate had a chestful of medals, adventure trg qualies, he never heard a squeak.

I didn’t serve the full term of 12 years to receive my medal and am therefore not allowed to wear any medals. I would never dream of wearing something I am not entitled to wear and I am extremely disgusted with this Police Officer lying about his Service credentials. I too hope that he gets served the justice he deserves. God bless all those whom have served and thank you.🫡🇬🇧🇺🇸🇨🇦

Remember seeing that on the news a few days ago and was absolutely gobsmacked!
I’m a serving soldier of 21 years with only months to go before I “collect my pension” and only yesterday I was awarded my LS&GC after serving 15 years of no major disciplinary (yes, I had a discipline at my 6 year point). It’s the first medal I’ve been personally awarded in a long time because you don’t get any for second and beyond tours of the same operational theatre. But, it felt so nice to be awarded that by the brigade commander in front of my wife and an absolute honour to be able to wear that because I’ve earned it. Obviously, had the jubilee medals and king’s coronation recently as well but this one is something you earn over a very long period of time.
Stories about a few individuals wearing medals they are not entitled to really do wind me up as well, have come across it as well but not many.

No gongs nor glitter to speak of except come 11/11 for our wreath laying ceremony where his display made me rather upset. I decided to demit after that incident. I was trained by a Falklands vet, great man and a good friend to this day but youd never know what he went through unless you asked him. It does make me angry yet makes me feel bad for them and our vets as well. Hang tough mate! Your blinding. Also, got to love South Wales ;) Neyland born and bred son! Even though the guy was not flaunting it in uniform, that badge was so honored among front line US troops in WWII, it was sometimes the only distinction the veterans chose to wear home.

There was a senior member of the RBL caught out a few years ago wearing the Silver Jubilee Medal. As many of you will know, these were issued on a very limited basis, around 8 per Major Unit (Bn, Regt, etc). He was found not to have been issued one, and had to resign his position. Now the question of whether there should have been more SJM issued is a complex one, that's been argued about for decades, but the fact is there weren't many to start with, he didn't get one, and was found out.
Oh, and if you need to check, a full list of all named personnel awarded the SJM was kept - unlike for other Jubilee Medals, which weren't even engraved with names / numbers....

A lion doesn't have to tell the other animals in the jungle they are a lion. I've never heard anyone say they couldn't hack basic training they just say oh the got injured, the fact of the matter is a lot more people fail than pass basic training but the failures will never tell you they couldn't hack it. 😂😂😂

My late father (716 (Airborne) Light Composite Company) was scathing of 'pretenders' of the type you have discussed.
Dad was proud of having served, but only in his final years did he open up about some of his experiences.
I appreciate that some people like to dress up as re-enactors (there are two such parades of vehicles and medal-wearing flag-waving cos-players in my neck of the woods this weekend), but Dad's dismissive opinion was that had any of them experienced the horrors of the sharp end of war, they would realise there is nothing to celebrate.

I left the Army in December 1981 to live and work in Africa. My battalion was deployed on Op Corporate. When I returned to the UK in 1983 I was astonished by the number of fantasists I bumped into who claimed to have served down south with my old unit. Some had clearly researched the basics but none of them ever knew any of the larger-than-life personalities one finds in most military units. And naturally, none could ever recall their own service number. Bit of a give away right there. 🙂
