Excellent review and explanation of how to use this heater!. I just returned a crappy aquatop 150w for this one. And I'm glad I did. Everything I've been reading and watching has seemed to point out that this heater is far superior to the others for the price.
I had an Aqueon which was a piece of crap - when set to 78 it heated to 85. I ordered an Epheim Jager and while I will say the written instructions that come with it leave much to be desired - nevertheless I watched a couple of utube vids before purchasing it and yours and the other was real easy to follow. I hooked mine up - set it to 78 and the thermometer read 80 - so adjusted the red ring to read 80 (same as the thermometer) - and adjusted the blue dial to read 78 - and now the temp is steadily reading 78 - so calibration was pretty easy to do. The only criticism that I will offer - and it's not about Epheim Jager - but actually all heaters - is that if you are purchasing a heater to put in an aquarium where fish already exist - you better keep an eye on the temp every couple of hours so it doesn't overheat and harm - or kill the fish. I guess a person could use a 5 gallon bucket of water they are going to use for a water change as a "test" for their new heater. Just my thoughts.....
91 liters is 24 gallons, typically 2.5 watts of heater per gallon will work, and i'd recommend doubling up on heaters, setting one at your desired temp and the other slightly below desired temp as a back up, so i would go with 2x 100 watt heaters
Thanks for the advice. The instructions don't explaian it as well ass you did. My temp is ideal now. I might add from personal experince to other fish lovers, I keep a lower watt heater set at just below optimal temp 2-3'C just incase one heater stops working. Depending on your tank size or how long you'll be away. Nice to have a back-up, doesn't have to be expensive, just something to keep your fishies alive until a proper replacement is available.
is the water temperature higher than the temperature setting on the eheim? did you try a different electrical outlet? otherwise, might be a faulty heater!
in fact the red circle is just to show the real temp, to adjust you should open the black lid on top cover and pull up the little grey piston, then indicate the thermometer temp with the blue circle and red arrow, close both the piston and the lid and let it make the work.
I have an older model that I got second hand from a fish store. the temp dial is strait forward but there is a blue tab or button on the top. the tab can be pulled up and pushed down, do you have any idea what that tab is for?
turn the blue dial to the desired temperature, wait 24 hours, check the water temperature, adjust the red dial to fine tune. Hope that helps, if not Eheim does have product instruction manuals on their website
does your tank have enough flow? is the heater located towards the middle of the tank? if so, i would use the recalibration ring and bump it up a few degrees
I had some luck with this heater and got it working very accurately now. These are the key points that helped me. 1. If you have unplugged the heater, its first time in the tank or you just did a water change. Do not turn it on straight away. Wait for 30mins or so before turning it on. 2. The heater needs to go through several on/off cycles to "allow the heater to align itself with the red pointer". This takes some time but does happen. 3. If the pointer is in the centre, it will act as if it is aligned correct and will not adjust itself. So lets say you want 27c and the heater turns off at 29c and the red pointer is at +2 and 27c. Turn the blue dial to 25c. Let it cycle youll find it turns off at 27c. After some time youll find it will turn off at 26c. Turn the blue dial to 26c, so that it turns off at 27c again. Then after some time youll find it turns off at 26c again. Turn the dial to 27c. It will turn off at 27c aligned with the red pointer and blue dial. When it eventully turns off at 26c again, this time move the red pointer down to 26c. Then move the blue dial to 27c. Then when it turns off at 26c again. Move the red dial to 26c again. Then move the blue dial to 27c. The red dial will now be in the centre and aligned with the blue dial. The heater should now be calibrated.
Nîne minutes to say the following: the heater is already factory-calibrated to 79 degrees. Do not change any settings on the new heater.Check the temperature of the water in your tank. Put the new heater in your tank and plug it in. Leave it until the water temperature in your tank is within the calibrated range of the new heater. No adjustment should be needed, but if the thermometer in your tank does not match the position of the RED pointer after 24 hours, you can recalibrate by setting the RED pointer to the actual temperature of your water. If you then want to adjust the HEAT setting, turn the BLUE dial to the desired temperature indicated by the RED pointer, which is just a glorified thermometer.
***** thank you, that makes more sense. i have been wrestling with this, not knowing where to turn the blue dial after dialing in the red arrow. i'm sure i set the red arrow to match what the actual temp is and then what do i turn the blue dial to if i want 78?
I think you’ll find that the red dial is intended for ‘calibration’ of the thermostat whilst the blue dial is used to adjust the ‘set point’ of the thermostat. Still your explanation was way more wordy so must be better … 🤔
I love this product. I have a 150w Eheim heater in my 55 gallon tank which is doing a great job. The heater had been used in my 40 gallon tank which started leaking over Christmas. I got the bigger tank but kept the same heater. Is this going to be hard on my heater? or Should I purchase a larger heater?
I'm having a hard time calibrating this heater. I purchased the 75w version for a 10 gallon tank. I set it to 83 but it shuts off at 78 ( this is what the thermometer is showing me), could I have a defective heater since adding 4 degrees would only take it to 82?
Hi there I just bought my heater today and it doesnt seem to be working...the light doesnt come on when i plug it in....am I doing something wrong? thanks
Awesome heaters, I have two... One in a 23 gallon tank and one in a 65 gallon tank. They stay extremely accurate, and the second dial is great for winter/summer fluctuations. My only complaint is the suction cup quality- after about 8 months they go stiff and need to be replaced.
try re-calibrating the full 4 degrees F to get you to 82 degrees, make sure you aren't near any drafts or vents and the aquarium is off the floor in a heated room, if it still won't get to 83, consider returning it, as it should be able to get up to around 90F
it depends on what you have living in your tank. google a care sheet for the species in your tank, if they prefer warm water, set it to 78-80 degrees, if they prefer cool water, set it to 75 degrees and check the thermometer over time and adjust as needed
i have an eheim heater too, and so far it has worked just fine. but i tried, and its great to know, that i can adjust the pointer too, in case the thermostat isnt spot on, f.ex. when the heating wire slowly starts to decay after a few years. .
What happens if I put the 75 watt heater into a 5 gallon tank, and the 125 watt into 10 gallon? I want to keep temperature at 82 F, the lowest temp my water drops to is 71 F and the highest is 76 F. Please help, I barely ordered these off amazon and they arrive today. I will return them if they are not suitable
Ever had an issue with a Jager heater failing in the constant on position? Mine did today, sw tank, got up to 93 before I caught it. No fish loss but the heater was.literally smoking out of the top. So far half my corals looseness or dying
Question: 1. How long is the waranty, lifetime? 2. Does it has a sensor that automaticaly turn off the heater once is taken out of water? Thanks for read
Wish I had read your comment earlier! My heater would not turn off either, ran the tank up to 40 deg C! I won't be leaving an 'untested' product in the tank again without keeping a very close eye on it, I had gone out to do grocery shopping.....Unfortunately, my fish were in there.... they are no more RIP. The water was so hot my hands were stinging as I removed the dead fish... so cranky right now!
Me too!! I set mine to 26.5, it is 31'c, my fish seem to be OK as it was a few hours but not good! I have corydoras who do not survive over 28/29 so thank god they're OK! I have a fantastic thermometer which I do trust! I've now been given a cheaper easier heater which seems perfect! Paid more for a quality brand which has over complicated it all!!!! Sorry for your fish, rip lil fishies!
Hi bro i have same problem I put 25°celsius blue dial and thermometer read 26.5° and the heater no stop/Turn off ,keep lighting I put dial blue on 22° and heater Turn off at 25° wtf a cheap heater.... U have some problem bro? Have solution this?
that's fine, it just means it will heat the water faster and not work as hard, these heaters run large, they are very long, so hopefully it fits inside the tank!
I set mine to 18.5 C (only for proving that it might be broken), it got to 30 C, that's when i plugged it off. It heats non-stop, the only way to stop it is to plug it off. Do you think it's broken?
when is it appropriate to use the heater? because the temp of my water on the thermostat (not the heater) is just below the yellow mark and slowly makes its way to the green area throughout the day. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
for specific questions, you can try eheim's contact form on their website, i would suggest setting your dial to your desired temperature, wait a few hours or until the heater light turns off and read the actual temperature of the water from an accurate thermometer, then recalibrate by using the red recalibration ring as i demonstrated in the video
so i have a 150 and 250 setup in my 125gal would you say the dials would be pretty accurate for a tank that large or is it all bout thermometer reading. i just put in my tank last night thats why im asking
....so how do you recalibrate the heater if the temperature difference is greater than the adjustable amount of the red dial? Other than a hard reset ( which works) or waiting 24 hrs, which I wouldn't do due to some sensitive discus. Oh and I don't want to run dual heaters.
This is my problem mine is set at 25 but themometer says 29/30 I can't alter tye red dial to 29 to recalibrate because it will only move to 26/27 then sticks because of how its designed don't rate this hearer at all gave me nothing but grief for days soon as I'm paid I'm replacing
this is way too confusing! I turned the dial to 78 degrees for my desired temperature while it is in the water, plugged it in and the light wont come on. if i crank the dial up to the mid 80s it turns on! I dont want the water to be more than 80 the fish will die lol whenever I turn the blue to 78 or 77 it autoatically shuts off YET my fish tank reads that it is 74-75 degrees. ALSO when I turn the red dial to set the temp. the water is, the blue dial moves. PLEASE HELP! :)
freshwater tropical and salt water reef fish come from native habitats where the water temperature is between 70-80 degrees F, without an aquarium heater it's hard to maintain that water temperature to keep the fish healthy.
it would be better to have two separate 75w or 50w heaters placed apart in the aquarium for more even heating. Rule of thumb 2-4 watts per gal. Use the higher wattage if room temperature drops a lot at night.
I would recommend if your going to inspect your heater for damage to wear some type of gloves, just like the headlights you put into your car the oils from human hands can leave heat spots on the glass which can lead to cracks in the glass, which is the same for Aquarium heaters so handle with care.
can some one help i set my heater to 28 and wont switch off at all after all my Thermometer reads 29c + i would like to reset my tenp to 26c and have tried but cant seen to do it right could someone plz explane how to do it ????? i dont get the video or instructions
Hi Greg,I bought the Hagen Fluval 200w for 60 Lt tank, thinking it was the best for my turtle. But it is crap..I cannot heat my acquarium to 80 F degrees and it is stuck to 14. So now i need a new heater that warm the tank at the right temps for my baby to swim and bask...Can you please help me to find one cuz i don't want waste my money, my time and get frustrated .. Cheers mate :)
Damn thing. Great heater, but the water build up always gets me and I have to look this video up before I adjust the temperature or I feel like I'll break it haha. We've had the same one now for a few years. Best heater we've had. Not sure how those damn cichlids are moving the dial though, or how that happened. Was knocked down six degrees suddenly.
to be honest, lots of heater manufacturers have had recalls and quality control problems, for turtles, i like to use shatterproof submersible heaters and place them out of reach of the turtles if possible
Not trying to make tea here. Recently I had to buy another heater as i had an outbreak of Ich in my tank. I had stupidly bought a pre-set (78 degree) heater. Non adjustable of course. Bought this one to raise the temp. temporarily. This thing will NOT shut off. Had my temp up to 86 which was OK for Ich, but I had set it for 82. Turned the dial down. Light indicating temp was still on. Adjusted the as low as it would go. Light still on indicating it was still heating even though the tank itself was still 82. Used two back up thermometers while doing this and they both read the same temp, but the Jager was still heating. It just won't shut off. I know other people have had this problem as well. Was always a fan of Eheim products, but not any more. I know everyone has different opinions and maybe I just got a bad one. 40 gallon tank-150 watt heater.
Hi bro i have same problem I put 25°celsius blue dial and thermometer read 26.5° and the heater no stop/Turn off ,keep lighting I put dial blue on 22° and heater Turn off at 25° wtf a cheap heater.... U have some problem bro? Have solution this?
My jager just keeps running way to hot. I have gone thru the instructions and youtube vids and every possible method of calibrating this heater with no luck. Just keeps running way to hot and not shutting off. About to give up and try my luck at getting my money back
Unplug it allow it to sit in you tank for at least an hr and plug it in again. It is important when you first get these things to allow the heater to sit in the water for a half an hr before plugging in.
i'm pretty sure mine was shipped from the same place yours was, there are always going to be duds, try calling the customer service number for a replacement, good luck!
because they don't make the new Eheims like they use to. The original green glass were stand up heaters. The rubber suction cups harden over a few months and need replacing. ~$5 for 4. U.S.
Shouldn't there be a light to indicate it is on?? I plugged it in and no light comes on. I have spent an hour listening to every review on this particular heater to try to figure how to get this thing to work. I am taking it back tomorrow if I don't see some kind of light come on.
Hi Greg> I used to Be a BIG Fan Of Eheim Heaters> I bought a New One let it sit in box on shelf in original packing> About 1.5 yrs later I opened it in an emergency & it stuck & kept heating> I unplugged it & called eheim I told situation & That Id like to have a replacement I said Id send it back to them for a replacement cause when they see orig. receipt & that wire is 100% clean & fresh out of box & Glass on Heater is Crystal Clear New > No guy said I can see where you're going >No cant repl
Thank you for your great review, was very helpful. Hope you don't take this in the wrong way, just want to give you some advice.. Have a look at the video yourself and you will find out that you say "uuhh" to many times.
AND if you are just changing to a new heater, set the red pointer to the current temperature of your tank, set the blue dial to the desired temperature according to the red pointer, put the heater in your tank, plug it in, and walk away.
not all heaters are 100% accurate, as in, the number on the blue dial may not be the exact water temp, the red dial allows you to fine tune your heater so the blue dial reads correctly
I ordered one. Hope it works properly. Thanks for the video. Also if you make another one about this heater its worth mentioning that the manufacturer recommends to keep it in the tank for 30 min before plugging it in

Is there a trick to turning the red dial? Like from the back white thing? Or just however you can turn it
yeah, they are suppose to, however, one of mine was half above water and still on the other day, worried me a little, still works though
gday can the heater be fully submerged in the tank? cheers nice n helpful vid

had the exact same heater for 5 yearsnow on my 70 gallon tank, not a single issue great heater used it for my discus kept the temp well
I like your confidence in the calibration of a cheap aquarium thermometer …
it's waterproof, you can submerge the entire thing, just make sure to make a drip loop towards the plug end!

I have the exact heater but I don't really need it for my goldfish. I want to make a terrarium, is it possible to use this heater for terreria?

great video, i just bought two of these and didnt know about the red dial at all

Btw, It's been on all day without turning off... could it be a messed up eheim?
Hi Greg, just one question, when you fine tune and calibrate the heater, do you unplug it and serve it or u just calibrate it while it's plug?
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. OK so would you say that the Eheim Jager 150 w is ideal for a 80 F degrees temp, for my turtle? Cheers

Is it normal for the light to stay on for a long time?
Most heaters, over time, tend to get stuck on a temperature. I use a controller now with all heaters. I have over 30 fish tanks.
how do you find the "controller" I assume this gadget OVER RIDES the temperature dial on the heater itself?
Hi I got a 200w heater for a 37 gallon, it is good enough? To what temperature I must set it?? Help please..
Is it the eheim 200w? If so, that's way more than enough for a 37 gallon tank.
it would be better to have two separate 75w or 50w heaters placed apart in the aquarium for more even heating. Rule of thumb 2-4 watts per gal. Use the higher wattage if room temperature drops a lot at night.

yer hello im new to this just got my first tank its 91 lt would a 300w jager do the job.eney help thanks
I would recommend if your going to inspect your heater for damage to wear some type of gloves, just like the headlights you put into your car the oils from human hands can leave heat spots on the glass which can lead to cracks in the glass, which is the same for Aquarium heaters so handle with care.
can some one help i set my heater to 28 and wont switch off at all after all my Thermometer
reads 29c +
i would like to reset my tenp to 26c and have tried but cant seen to do it right
could someone plz explane how to do it ????? i dont get the video or instructions
yeah, i know, i'm getting better at it, it does take practice and a self awareness though, thanks!
Is the indicator light supposed to go on and off all the time? Please help
the light goes on when it's heating, if your tank is up to temp the light should kick on every so often
Cheers mate :)
can i use this for turtle? the red ear turtle? (the amount of water is just passing their shell by about 1 centimeter)
as long as the heater is completely submerged you should be good
*****
thanks you. Can I place it under water horizontally? Or does it have to be placed vertically?
Kelly Ye can go vertically or horizontally.
Does it have to be vertical??
Damn thing. Great heater, but the water build up always gets me and I have to look this video up before I adjust the temperature or I feel like I'll break it haha. We've had the same one now for a few years. Best heater we've had. Not sure how those damn cichlids are moving the dial though, or how that happened. Was knocked down six degrees suddenly.
to be honest, lots of heater manufacturers have had recalls and quality control problems, for turtles, i like to use shatterproof submersible heaters and place them out of reach of the turtles if possible
what store is it that has all the *duds*? I'm looking at getting mine at marine depot
just got a 125W today, this was helpful, thanks,
My indicator light stays on all the time, never shuts off and keeps water at 78.6 no matter how high or low I set the blue ring. What's going on?
***** the light should only turn on when heating, sounds strange
i have the eheim jager 300 watt ,its the best heater ive ever owned.
calibrate while plugged in seems to work fine
thanks for this video. I bought this thermometer and didn't understand where to turn what :-)
Wow' thank you! I couldn't make heads or tails the directions. Much simpler
big help thank mate
nice, i've got two running as well for a back up
Not trying to make tea here.
Hi bro i have same problem
I put 25°celsius blue dial and thermometer read 26.5° and the heater no stop/Turn off ,keep lighting
I put dial blue on 22° and heater Turn off at 25° wtf a cheap heater....
U have some problem bro? Have solution this?
Thank you!
I have this heater and I love it!!!
My jager just keeps running way to hot. I have gone thru the instructions and youtube vids and every possible method of calibrating this heater with no luck. Just keeps running way to hot and not shutting off. About to give up and try my luck at getting my money back
might be faulty, return it
Unplug it allow it to sit in you tank for at least an hr and plug it in again. It is important when you first get these things to allow the heater to sit in the water for a half an hr before plugging in.
i'm pretty sure mine was shipped from the same place yours was, there are always going to be duds, try calling the customer service number for a replacement, good luck!
hi guys why the signal light wont light up in my new heater
same here
because they don't make the new Eheims like they use to. The original green glass were stand up heaters. The rubber suction cups harden over a few months and need replacing. ~$5 for 4. U.S.
helped me a lot! Thanks! A+ review
how do you get free products for a review?
mine turns off before reaching the desired temperature :/ is this normal ? -_-
Shouldn't there be a light to indicate it is on?? I plugged it in and no light comes on. I have spent an hour listening to every review on this particular heater to try to figure how to get this thing to work. I am taking it back tomorrow if I don't see some kind of light come on.
Great video, very helpful
Hi Greg> I used to Be a BIG Fan Of Eheim Heaters> I bought a New One let it sit in box on shelf in original packing> About 1.5 yrs later I opened it in an emergency & it stuck & kept heating> I unplugged it & called eheim I told situation & That Id like to have a replacement I said Id send it back to them for a replacement cause when they see orig. receipt & that wire is 100% clean & fresh out of box & Glass on Heater is Crystal Clear New > No guy said I can see where you're going >No cant repl
mine would never reach 90 degrees max out at 85 and its a 300w in a 120gal tank
Thank you for your great review, was very helpful.
Hope you don't take this in the wrong way, just want to give you some advice.. Have a look at the video yourself and you will find out that you say "uuhh" to many times.
working on it, thanks
Other videos say 1st move the red point to tank temp.
AND if you are just changing to a new heater, set the red pointer to the current temperature of your tank, set the blue dial to the desired temperature according to the red pointer, put the heater in your tank, plug it in, and walk away.
Thanks so much, for the help and the video, it is really appreciated Greg :) :D
yes, for sure, contact eheim customer service to see if they will replace it, that sounds really dangerous
Thanks Greg, I will give it a try!
very helpful video, thank you.
I didn't get the difference between the red and blue dials!
not all heaters are 100% accurate, as in, the number on the blue dial may not be the exact water temp, the red dial allows you to fine tune your heater so the blue dial reads correctly
I ordered one. Hope it works properly. Thanks for the video. Also if you make another one about this heater its worth mentioning that the manufacturer recommends to keep it in the tank for 30 min before plugging it in
great video!
get noticed! or contact their marketing department and ask
what is the size of that tank?? according to dimensions..
it's a standard sized 10 gallon tank for demonstration purposes
Very usefull.
Helped me.
10x.
I bought 150w heater for my 30 gallons reef tank, I set it up at 77 and my tank temperature raises to 81 degrees, this heater is garbage.
Thanks for the reply!!
yup!
thanks!
good vid I may buy one from this vid. I'm an ebo jager fan.
Sooo.. I set my Temp at 80 degress fer. & I got a measure of 84 degrees fer.

that would work, yes
