Ooooh no dr explaining how you manipulate your daughter's meal on UA-cam(!) to limit her wedges(carbs)is ok but the man working out with his son, on a treadmill, on vacation, and explaining a reasonable physiological trade off is setting him up for a lifetime of eating problems.
      That is backwards.

I have been preaching this approach with my patients. Inner work is essential for any external changes to happen. Once we started focusing on stress and emotional state I have seen such great results with my patients.

I like that quote "everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face " yes so true..life happens and we have to be flexible and present enough to respond to it.

I'm finding it much harder to maintain my ideal weight in my 40's.. and after listening to this I think I've figured out what drives me to eat the wrong foods sometimes which undoes all the disciplined eating and exercise... its pleasure seeking. I think life can just all seem like hard work the older we get and maybe we need to try and have more fun and pleasurable experiences interspersed into our days!

I think part of the reason that ‘emotions’ are demoted/neglected in society is because they’re often referred to as the opposite of logic (as you delineated in your story on why you turned to sugar briefly during this pandemic ~ you said “it was an emotional decision and not logic”) ~ yet emotions are logical ~ you experience stress and your emotions send signals in response to your situation (illogical would be for something to happen for no reason) People think logic necessarily means “good/correct/orthodox” but there are many “bad” logics ~ there are many belief systems that are logical even as they contradict each other ~~~ So, I’m very excited that you ultimately hope to dignify the role of emotions in life. You quickly referenced Spiritual resources and it’s really interesting to engage the wisdom ~~~ history also has a really interesting legacy on why emotions have been feminized, racialized, and subsequently sidelined ~ emotions are not just an individual obstacle, it’s a social-cultural issue

    People put weights on...
    Interesting.
I lost 10kg and my stamina increased like it was in my twenties.(I'm 45.)
    I'm doin'core training,run 15km distance,ran the half marathon in under 2hours.
Why?Because that covid crap was my teacher to change vision from money to health.
Bless for all fellow living beings.

I agree with you when you say that we can be hungry for emotions not for food. Now i am in Paris for vacation I love the culture of the society and many staff and how it works well. I feel satisfied and in confidence. During my journey I don’t feel hungry as i feel it in my country !!!!that string !!!!

Actually what he said is true , the majority of the personalities ( even like you) are not seeing new patients anymore , just write books , have courses and podcast but are not working one on one with the patients , I found myself with a lot of info but have no idea how can that works for me specially

I eat mostly whole plant foods, rather low fat, I may have gained a lbs or 2 during the pandemic, BMI is still fine, but even though the yoga studio was closed I managed to find a volunteer job where I get to move around all day long in nature.

How I wish I could become a patient of Dr. Chatterjee…so caring and full of wisdom. Weight issues over 40 years, including six years with an eating disorder. On a great path now after completing a hypnosis course called Food Freedom over the summer and making changes over the following months (got rid of 98% of sugar, grains and dairy, increased produce and good fats etc.). Blood pressure dropped right back to my old low normal!
After losing 25 lbs it’s disheartening to now see my weight loss slow to a crawl. Will I ever lose the rest? Practicing time restricted eating, occasional fasts consuming only bulletproof coffee, supplements, exercise etc. My metabolism still isn’t up to par, I guess.
Thank you, Dr. Chatterjee, for your fabulous approach to helping others! I’ll
    Keep on truckin’!

I relate to putting on weight in order to prevent intimacy with an abusive husband. All it did was create a poor self image, guilt and regret.I only was hurting myself in the end. It’s really stinking thinking.

Dr Chaterjee, you are right in that many people will find Gabor Mate too much like hard work (we love you Dr Mate), there must be all levels out there. Medical doctors have a unique perspective on how people live their lives, their response to stress, so writing about this is a huge act of generosity that will help many. Thank you both 🙏

The missing link is that modern foods are made to be addictive. There are actual scientists who are coming up with perfect formulas to get people addicted to snacks, sweets, sodas, etc.
There has to be an awareness that modern food is basically a drug.

Disagree about the last part that exercise doesn’t help with weight loss.
Weight lifting in particular and building lean muscle is an excellent method at increasing your resting metabolism.

I worked harder during the pandemic and answered the call to help ppl lose weight. There’s a new pandemic of overweight ppl and sometimes what used to work does not work anymore and adapting to being chunky isn’t ideal. That’s what happened to me 8 years ago when low carb didn’t work for me.

Stay active, eat lean protein, vegetables and fruits. If you lack the willpower to adhere to that then that is your downfall, not anyone else’s. A trend in society is to victimize themselves and not take accountability for their actions.

The formula is so easy and right in front of our faces, so after you decide to stop eating processed food and start cooking your meals from scratch and burn more calories than we take in and drink half your body weight in water on a daily basis, besides cardio brings down cholesterol which in turn bring down your glucose numbers.

Why is it so hard to understand that overweight people are 99 % emotionally eating? Is it easier to objectify and medicalize every phenomenon? We don't need gurus opinions on losing weight, this has been thoroughly researched and demonstrated. The problem is keeping the weight off, and to understand that, we need to understand what drives people to emotionally eat. Because
trying to make this a purely physiological phenomenon will not help anyone keeping the weight off. Now give me my podcast!

Thank you for your post. I would like to bring some contradiction to your position.
I lost 40 pounds by using keto diet at the age 60 during lockdown.
According to you, you could use any diet - carnivore, vegetarian, etr and let people loose weight. It’s not going to happen. I tried most before, failed all, acquired huge collateral damage.
The idea of giving freedom to people how to loose weight is also opens the freedom to fail with every or almost any choice they make.
Keto take care of most of the dietary food choices: sugar contending food :
Lots of greens, no carbs, reasonable amount of proteins, 3 times a day with the last time at 6pm. That gives people simple, working and doable recipe to loose weight.
Down the road, one need to acquire good habits: stop eating processed food, start exercising, fasting, etr. But keep the concept simple at the start. Above was enough for me to loose weight even though I ate junk, no exercising as long as no carbs were not taken.

agree totally. it's fine reading books but individual advice is almost impossible to get. For example your clinic Dr Chaterjee is no longer accepting new patients and we are at a loss to find those who have the same approaches you have.. Maybe a more useful tool for people would be a manual with reputable clinics who practice functional medicine or who practice individual patient based approach such as your clinic!
