This is the only video I can find of a winter ascent in Mount Charleston area. Thank you for helping me decide if I should bring skis on the plane to the desert. Haha
I know exactly what this is like. I've tried a few times to summit Charleston in winter covered in snow. Those south loop switchbacks in deep snow up to the ridge is totally exhausting and slow going. Even tried with a couple friends once and we got up to the south loop ridge, but we stopped there and camped and went down the next day. Goal is to summit in winter deep snow just one time in my life. But it will take 3 days and 2 nights and making 1-2 camps, I've determined. Also, attempting from the North loop seems easier but when I tried that way I stopped whenever it crosses the steep avalanche gulch below the summit, too much sketchy steep snow basically impassible. I have a love-hate relationship with Charleston after it's kicked my ass so many times. 3 summits under my belt in the summer months. Great mountain to have nearby as a Vegas local, and great training mountain for the bigger mountain trips I occasionally take.
Good for you, Chris. It takes more of a man of character to know when to call a hike. Pride goeth before the fall. Better to live to hike another day. Prayers for the the missing Mt. Baldy area hikers, Julian Sands and Bob Gregory. 🙏
Hey man thanx for the video! Im an ex wildland firefighter from california and new to nevada! Ive been looking into meeting new people and adventuring nevada some more! Maybe we can start something idk like an expedition or something..
G Rod thanks Man! Nevada is awesome, plenty of great places to adventure. There’s a great community of people here too, check out the FB groups in these genres: hiking, adventures, Trailrunning.vegas.
