I completed the south loop climb to the peak yesterday with my son. At 72 years of age, I guarantee it will test your endurance and mental toughness. The views are worth every ache and pain of a 13-hour hike. Your video and support links were priceless as they helped us prepare for the hike and visualize what we would experience. Thanks, Hiking Guy!
@@theadventuresofjkp8129 It was a solid 13 hours. Started just as the sun was beginning to rise at 6:15 AM and had to use headlamps for the final hour coming back down. Although I'm a casual runner, I'm in pretty good shape for my age, but the inclines just before the saddle/junction and the final push to the top required me to stop about every 50-100 feet to catch my wind. I'm sure that if you're younger than me and in good shape, you should easily complete it in 12 hours. Re-think whether you want to attempt the climb this late in the season. I tried several years ago with my son about the second week of October and hit snow. Not bad in the lower wooded portion, but nearer to the peak (which my son made it and I did not), it takes almost no snow to totally obscure the trail. At places, the trail is tough enough to follow even with no snow. Bring lots of water and energy bars/gels. I went through 9 bottles and could have used more. By all means do it! We spend winters in Vegas and have a 2nd floor condo in southwest Vegas where I look out of my living room window at the peak. What a rush it is for me to think that I made it to the top!
Hey @hikingguy! Did this hike on Wednesday and it was awesome. Thanks for the beta. As a weekend warrior from Philly, it was a solid workout but I made it in one piece. It might be worth adding to your description that the cell phone service was pretty good. I have a Garmin InReach so I was good either way. I'm all about having an emergency/evacuation plan. Throughout the hike, you don't have to go too far to get line of site with Vegas and/or the town of Mt. Charleston to send emergency texts at the least. Just food for thought. Thanks again! It was awesome!
Did this very hike last Thursday...thanks so much for all of your guidance, tips and insight. Was incredibly helpful! At 64 years of age it was tough but got 'er done!
I hiked Mt. Charleston back in May of this year, and yes it is a amazing trail. I love the section near the saddle around 10,700 feet where the trail becomes an Alpine meadow.
I live in England and love hiking - I plan on doing this and other mountains in 2025 for my 50th Birthday trip in the August . Hopefully i'll still be fit and healthy and can do this along with others such as Telescope Peak, Mount Whitney and the South Sister. Great video, website and info. All the best from England, Jim.
Pro Tip : 17 switchbacks to Echo Overlook and then 22 switchbacks from Echo Overlook to the crest of the Ridge/very start of the Meadows/Griffith Peak turn off...
Very nice. I did this hike for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I loved it so much that I went back a week later but started at Trail Canyon to the North Loop, then hiked Mummy Mountain, before continuing to Charleston peak. Then took the South Loop down, with a detour to Griffith peak before descending. Long day, but it was worth it. Like you said, "I love it here, I love it." 👍👊😎
👍 Nice, yea hoping to get back to the area and do a guide of the full loop, haven't been back since COVID and miss that whole wilderness area, really a gem
That's awesome. And yea, I love this hike, one of my all-time faves. I didn't get to do it this year because of all the craziness, but normally I bag it every year. Just 100% gorgeous and fun.
In the last 6 years in my mid 60’s I’ve done this hike to Charleston 6 times, even more to Griffith, wheeler peak twice, bottom of Grand Canyon twice, but next month I go in for triple bypass heart surgery 😢 WTF
Thank you so much for the turn by turn directions I plan to do a solo summit hike as a day trip this Monday. I’ve made it to the junction but had to turn around do to limited time sadly.
Completed this hike on June 25, and I made sure to watch this video the day before. Your insights and tips were extremely useful to me and made a big difference. Thank you for what you do.
Thanks-great video! Just did Mt. Timpanogos last week, similar elevation gain, but far more lush scenery (wildflowers & waterfalls galore) - this looks like a similar workout, but a bit barren in comparison. Will likely give it go as I'll be in the area.
Timpanogos is a great hike. I got caught up there in a thunderstorm years ago and had to boogie down. And yea, similar specs but much different feel on Charleston. Give it a go, it's one of my faves.
Hi, I really enjoy the way you make these hiking videos, and I definitely subscribed. Would you know of a guide that would take me up this trail? Thank you very much.
Thank you, glad you enjoy the vids 🙏👍 - I can do a guided hike up there, but we'd likely have to wait until later in the season when the snow is gone. Check out the guided hike page on my website for all the details.
It's hard to say and it's always different. I'd try and stop if you feel sick. I have some tips on dealing with altitude sickness here > hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/hikes-around-mt-whitney/mt-whitney-hike/ - good luck on your hike!
i’m going to vegas in 2 weeks. me and my mom are going to hike this and i’m so excited! i’ve only ever hiked cathedral rock, but i’m gonna bring lots of water and try my hardest!!! i can’t wait!!!!
Can you help me understand highway 52 on the other side of highway 160 in pahrump (is 372 now), is it a hiking trail to Mount Charleston or just a dead end ? Forgive me I am new to pahrump.
Did you really reach 11,916 ft? I have been Brian Head Peak (11,312 ft) but not Mt. Charleston Peak. Which road (156 to Lee Canyon) or (158 to Kyle Canyon) leads to Cathedral Picnic area and the parking lot?
Ha, no real cliff edges on this one unless you go off the trail. The whole second half is above the tree line and exposed to the elements, but again, no real crazy drops or edges.
Is this a 9 mile hike up and a 9 mile hike back??? Wow! If I could do this hike at all I'm pretty sure it would take me about 9 hours ... maybe 10! And that's if I hurried ... I think I should plan for 12 hours just to take it slow and spend 1/2 hour or so at the top.
Yup, about 18 miles roundtrip. It can be done in a day if you are fit. Make sure you read this too: hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/las-vegas-hikes/mt-charleston-peak-hike-south-loop-trail/
Nice video, up to the point where you said you can see the curvature of the earth. Lol. I got a good laugh out of that. You can’t see the see curvature from any mountain on earth, unless you are at least 60,000 feet up Lol.i like your videos though. Very informative
Well, I mean you can see the horizon is curved, I think that's how most folks would interpret that. Will make sure I use the right wording next time to avoid any confusion. I'm also 50,000 feet tall, so maybe that's what's going on.... 😁

Thank you and glad you got a chance to experience it - it's an epic hike!
Holy shit you did it at 72, what a legend
How long did it take you, round trip? I’ll be in town for work and want to bag this peak but I’m not sure I’ll have enough time. Thanks!!

Yea, same, that's why I love the South Loop. That whole stretch above 10700 is magical.

Thank you so much for this video! My daughter and I climbed it yesterday and this video gave us the information and confidence to do it!
Congrats, this peak is one of my favorites...
Thanks dude! Perfect video! We're attempting this week with my daughters.
Have fun, weather looks perfect!

Cool! Would watch it again!
Soon I hope I can get on the top!
Should be free of snow in the next month or two - haven't been there since last year so not sure of the conditions now.
Got to hike this place earlier this year, it was awesome, I could see a dust devil all the way in death valley
That's awesome. And yea, I love this hike, one of my all-time faves. I didn't get to do it this year because of all the craziness, but normally I bag it every year. Just 100% gorgeous and fun.
Awesome video. I love mt Charleston
Amazing place, great gike. Brings up a lot of memories. Thanks for this.

Good luck with the surgery, sure you'll be back out on the trail in no time...👍🏻

Fantastic! My friend lives in Vegas, so I have another excuse to crash at his pad!! Looks like a wonderful adventure!

Good video. I've done that hike about five times. When did they put the wood Shelter by Mount Griffith
Awesome video!
Thank you!

Is there any exposure throughout the hike? Anything to freak you out if you're not fond of heights... Asking for a friend 😂
Ha, no real cliff edges on this one unless you go off the trail. The whole second half is above the tree line and exposed to the elements, but again, no real crazy drops or edges.
Could you define whomp, whomp? I’m not familiar with the term.
Would altitude sickness be an issue hiking to the peak?
Yup - check out my Whitney guide for some altitude sickness guidance
