    Wow, what a week. Monday started off with text messages from my dozer guy saying he was getting started and the electric company was already rolling along.
    The majority of the pad work was done on day 1 and it was finished up on day 2. It still needs to be finessed. I have a concrete guy lined up to come take a look and bid on the concrete pad for the shop.
    The electric run was completed on Thursday. Extra conduit was run for fiber internet as well.
    The tractor repair was quick. When I dropped it off for a warranty repair I was told 2-3 weeks. They got it done one day shy of a week and I picked it up on the one week mark. I'm very pleased with the folks at Oktibbeha County Co-Op for getting this done quickly. The problem ended up being a blown cylinder inside the power steering, causing too much pressure on a fitting that wasn't designed for it.

    Nice to see this coming along.
    And to answer your insect question.....Dasymutilla occidentalis (red velvet ant, eastern velvet ant, cow ant or cow killer) it is a species of parasitoid wasp. Females have no wings and the males have translucent wings but no stinger by what I've found.
    Females do have stingers and are best known for their extremely painful sting, ranked 3 out of 4 on the Schmidt's sting pain index, earning them the nickname of "cow killer". So be careful with the wingless ones especially if you have any allergies from the venom they secrete.
    Hope this helps.

    You nailed it. Large fiber box (hand hole) is for splice can from the road. Orange conduit (innerduct) is pulled from road to large hand hole, spliced, then to small hand hole which will connect to the shop and eventually house. If you want to connect the house and shop, you can use some fiber you can pickup online. Let me know if you need help/advice when you get to that stage. Have helped other with this same thing.

    • @JayBates

    • @andycannarella
      @andycannarella 2 місяці тому

      @@JayBates I was going to suggest you have them drop a separate metered service up front for a gate, but then remembered you were being charged commercial rates. I had a friend do this. You could drop a conduit in the water trench to run fiber up there for camera/gate system. Sounds like it may be too far to run a power circuit from the shop.

    Hey Jay
    Please be careful with running Ethernet cable. The maximum distance of Cat5e or cat6 is 328’ between powered devices. If the distance from your shop network devices to the network devices in your house is over 300’ run fiber between the devices (a switch on both ends). You don’t need the electrical company to run it in the conduit but terminating fiber requires special tools which they will have.

    • @JayBates
      @JayBates  2 місяці тому

      I thought about finding a cheap trailer to build a box on. But it will be much cheaper to just build an elevated box on skids. Then use the tractor to move it with pallet forks. Not sure how much I'm valuing mobility with it. Maybe one of each style. Mobile for side by side delivery for stuff like trail cutting and the stationary box for areas like the creek where we visit routinely.

    • @paulsinchuk4198

      That is going to be way past the length limit of ethernet and especially the POE. He could have them run fiber and then at the end do a fiber to ethernet converter along with a POE injector. He could power that with a solar panel and a battery for when the sun isn't shinning. I know Unifi has an outdoor box that comes with a power injector for a POE switch where all he would need to supply is +/- to it and strap it on a pole with the camera.

    Don't worry too much about your daughter driving. Old 'Country Cop' story from Australia - he was out on patrol, came across a herd of sheep on the road being herded by a truck - but the truck looked to be empty. He pulled over and had a look inside the cab - two small boys were 'sharing' the driving, one was on the floor pushing the brake, clutch or accelerator on instructions from his brother, who was standing on the seat, working the steering wheel and gear lever. They were so young neither of them could sit down and see through the windscreen. Also - a lot of that dumped junk looks to be copper and aluminum, so you could sort it into bins and get some $$ for your trouble.

      Yes. There are two scrap yards right down the road from us. Everyone scraps stuff around here. I'll definitely be sorting piles.

    Do you think the small box might be the grounding bar? The copper rod... Also, it's a Velvet Ant, I think.

      It does have a grounding rod in it. But why not put the grounding rod in the other boxes?

    Your electric company is awesome that would have easily cost 60k to get electric underground that far and there would not have been any fiber in it and past the transformer in my area is on you so you have to hire an electrician to do that part

    the part of video at day 128. do you think over the years before you got to your property someone used it as a dumping grounds or its not that bad? I live in long island and after rains, the ground percolates all this shit up. like bolts car parts, glass, you name it. I heard from someone years ago that the person that owned the house used to bury car parts.

      It's mainly on the main trail and around the adjacent property lot lines. I'm not too worried about it. I can't change the past but I sure can clean it up for the future.

      @JayBates Maybe check for the existence of asbestos amongst that buried refuse. Don't want to breathe up the fibres.

    So when you build the house will that get it's own septic system, or do you plan to share the system between both structures? I ask because I can just imagine the bureaucrats saying "sorry, can't do another septic so close to an existing one". I'm pretty sure "Murphey's law" originated with a government official.

    Any idea how many feet of electrical was laid and what the cost was on a per foot (or any other length) basis? Just curious what Mississippi charges for that. Your daughter looked like a real natural behind the wheel of that tractor.

      1250' of underground, plus whatever was needed to go up the pole at the road. I was never told a price per foot from this electric company. The neighboring electric company, which is who we are using for our camper spot, charges $10 per foot underground. I spoke a friend who works at the electric company where we previously lived and they provide the first 500' free then $12 per foot afterwards.

    As an adult without kids and remembering what I was like at an older age than her, I would be too worried to allow this. This is more of a comment on me than a criticism of you. I hope she is having a blast with this whole process.
