  • In this tutorial we'll be going over how to create a emblem-style logo that uses nothing but simple shapes to construct a mountain range with a river and pine tree in the forefront.
To accomplish this we'll be making good use of path effects, path operations, and the Nodes Tool.

Very entertaining. Sometimes using more shortcuts would be welcome. They're so handy! And quite easy to pick up. Some I also love to use are:
Home - object to very top,
End - object to very bottom
    Esc - deselect everything

Good quality tutorials. Whenever I had to find how to do a thing in inkscape, and had to google, I've always selected your vids if they appeared. Big thumbs up for you narrating what you do, go to which menu, and selecting which tool, or using which hotkey. It really helps to hear it, also repeatedly. I've been using inkscape for some 13 years now, but projects are simple so I seldom get to touch some of the more advanced features.

@@samuelnyiro2316 one simply needs one to be extremely familiar with all of the effects, tools and how the program works in general. What Ive learned from coding is, if you dont know how to get from A to B, its not creativity holding you back, but skills gap. Learn the basics so they are ingrained in your subconscious and then amazingly things start to flow from what you envision to what you can actually create.

    Problem/Solution:
Problem: Doing ctrl+shift just bends the line on a side, and dragging highlighted nodes go in the same direction without locking.
Solution: I couldn't tell with the screen, but moving nodes by clicking nodes behaves very differently from OUTSIDE the shape near an arrow. Clicking barely outside the node, THEN ctrl+shift gets the desired result. It's easier for the horizontal adjustment where the selection forms a box than the vertical.

Oh man, you just saved my sanity! I just HATE it when I don't get the same options or even visual elements as in the demo. Where Nic got a little vertical arrow to do the mirror node move I got just 2 diagonal arrows each side of the node and no symmetry move. I followed your instructions and Bingo! This was after an hour wasted Googling and reading help screens 😖( I need to know how things work!). I SO wish I'd found you first!!

I had same issue. Further down in the comments 'Peregrination' also noted the problem - then a solution. Even reading the solution I had troubles.
Select the nodes of interest. Note the 2 very small arrows extruding from the selected node at 45 degree angles. If I enlarge my workspace, hold down control + shift, then click ON THE small arrow (Peregrination, in their comment, recommends clicking, I think, in between the two arrows and dragging - maybe that works better) and drag then the two nodes behave as seen in the video...
...until they don't. More than half the time as I drag the arrow something ungood happens to the image and a giant rectangle overtakes most of my workspace, heading off into infinity off the workspace edge. (my version: 1.2.1)
...but if I keep futzing with it, just as my last piece of sanity is held in a tight breath, it works.

Hold Shift+Click a choose a color to for the stroke( the outline). Then regular click the square with the X in it in the color pallete in bottom left and that will empty the filled circle giving you just a simple circle outline.

heeelp! why cant i design the river? i do everything step by step - but when i grab the nodes tool (minute 6:11) i cannot do the same as you do. my nodes tool makes no curved alteration but only a straight one (plus it doesnt only alter the straight line, but it also fills it, unwanted, with color). - i tried to find a solution in the manual of inkscape (as linked in my actual inkscape version) but its not been updaten for version 0.92 or so! how can i find a solution...?

A good video that would've been great if you had 1. Had DARKER backgrounds and 2. Used more muted colours that translated better in a video. It's really straining for the eyes to look at this black on bright white you seem to do in many of your videos and it throws me off of subbing, sadly. Otherwise good tutorials, just really hard to look at.
