  • I finally reached a huge milestone up here at the Off Grid Cabin, I have a fully functioning 2000 Watt Solar System. Which means lights and fridge/freezer!
    In this video I take you along as I do the complete install, starting with running the wires from the panels, and then the complete wiring of the Hybrid 2000 Watt Inverter/Charger all-in-one system.
    The solar system has been running for the last couple weeks, and it sure is nice having lights now that the days are getting shorter.
    Here are links to the DC Breakers that I used in this video:
    30AMP DC 12V/24V/32V Circuit Breaker Inline Fuse Holder: amzn.to/2ZF8FgZ
    RENOGY 100A ANL Fuse Set w/Fuse (ANL Fuse Holder + 100A ANL Fuse)

    This panel can put out close to 100 watts ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

    For those that don't know ; if you are running wire through long runs of conduit you can use a small string with a knot or mouse on the end and blow it or suck it through the conduit with a shop vac....and attach the string to the wire and pull it through.

    This is the best video I've seen regarding solar set up. One thing that I can't seem to find is how to hook the AC output to an existing breaker box. I have a mobile home that I'm taking off grid and obviously it has a breaker box installed already. And guidance that you could give me or direction that you could point me to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.

      Next time i'm at the cabin I will make a video showing how it is wired into my panel so it makes a little more sense. I am not a professional electrician, so take everything I say with a grain of salt, but my system has worked fine for me with no issues. I just encourage everyone to do there own research. I have the inverter running into my panel inside the cabin with a 100amp main breaker and then the cabin is split on two 20amp breakers. Each breaker controls half of my cabin.

    What an excellent video ! I am currently in the process of putting together my solar system for my cabin and I was doing exactly as you were with the generator plugged into the side of my cabin which powered the outlets and lighting as well as a battery charger I use to charge a 12 v battery which I have hooked up to an inverter so that during the day I don't need the generator on to charge cell phones and run my cell booster. I have purchased a new 425 watt Q Cell panel and am soon going to purchase the MPP 2424 which is similar to your unit, along with four 230 WH AGM golf cart batteries. My system will be used to power an apartment size fridge, cell booster as well as a few led lights and charge cell phones. I have a Honda 2200 inverter generator to use for all high power draw items. Do you have any advice now that some time has passed using your system ? Again thanks for the video, just as I was trying to wrap my head around my eventual permanent solar system, you provided all the information I needed without asking lol. Liked and Subbed !

    • @verohandymike
      @verohandymike 2 роки тому +2

      I am doing something similar. I would say the advice for us both would be to upgrade gradually as we can afford it, I'm betting we will never regret any upgrade. For instance add a couple solar panels when we can, or another pair of batteries. I was fortunate to start out with a lifepo4 battery, at $1,500 it was a big sacrifice, now I can tell that if I can get one more just like it I'll be where I need to be. That is, you need to be able to survive off battery alone for three cloudy days, that's an ideal goal for your setup. Yes, I know you might have 2 weeks of cloudy days and be just about flat out, but if we aspire to have a battery bank that can survive 2 weeks without a good charge we'd be into the $25,000+ bracket in batteries alone.

    What is different if your using a 3000w 24v pure sine wave PWM vs. an MPPT all in one inverter?
    Then is it better to connect two 3000w 24v pure sine wave 50A PWM all in one inverters in series or parallel?
    How do you hook them up in series?
    How do you hook them up in parallel?
    Last question…..
    Using these all in one units….the output is 230v…..how do I set it up to run my breaker box in my house, (100A service) or put in separate 240A breakers for (Water heater, electric stove, Dryer) then the rest is 120v plug ins threw out my house?
    Do I use a step up/step down converter?
    You are the only one on UA-cam that has been able to explain this to me in a way that I understand…
    Thank you

      Was hard to understand. But if u have an 230 volt inverter in all in one you shud sell this and buy and for 110volt.
      110 typical american use. 230 is normal in Europa and so. But panels are ok. But if it was me i had selling all in one component and get to bye like same only that convert power to 110 like you need.

      As long as load is not too high you can split the cells that is run wires from one battery (12v) to power you're 12v appliance. I have same system and will be doing my lights this way. If it's a big load it might unbalance you're batteries but small loads they'll balance themselves. If you need bigger current then much convertor or dc to dc convertor will do it you can set the voltage and run from 24v they are cheap and efficient.

    The hybrid all in one does make for a simple setup, but the downside is it is not upgradable. When you decide that you need more watts you have to buy a bigger one. Also, they are (so far) limited in watts, I think 3,500 watts is the highest I have seen, while if you have a separate inverter setup you can get higher wattage inverters to upgrade without changing any of the other components.

      Nah, 5 to 12kw are all available, many are able to be run in "parallel" and give you split phase 240 so you can wire into a normal house breaker box. It is definitely something to consider before purchase tho...
      Also, I've seen ~six hundred fifty dollar~ 5kw, 48v dc, 110v single phase offbrand inverters that'll take up to 500v of solar input.... making large arrays easy... but no reviews.

    I've watched a hundred videos and have never seen an explanation for what I "assume" is a common idea! Using "All-In-One" systems (such as the MPP or other "all-in-ones") to run battery & solar directly into an electrical panel.
    [: 15x25 small barn. Wired like a regular house (15A outlets, 10@ 10watt LED "recessed lights"). I use a Champion 3500 watt Generator (w/wireless remote) for my "shore power". (I'm 100% off-grid.) My Small "6-breaker panel" is wired direct to the generator using a TT30 RV-Ready plug. I have to run the gen even when I'm just using a TV and LED at night. A TOTAL WASTE of GAS !!! ... so using a MPP type system (inverter/charger/solar & a battry bank) seems a good way to go right!?
    ... Why bother with an extension cordfrom "line out" (-as i see in most videos)? ... Can't I wire my generator into the MPP "Line in" (instead of going through the breaker box as I do now)?
    ... Then run 14/2 (or 12/2?) from the MPP "Line out" directly as the main feed into the small breaker box?
    ... Can't a significent battery bank (running thru the breaker box) service the outlets (and a overhead fan)? (except when using the coffee maker --which I would do ONLY with the generator on). (So every morning coffee session would help top off the batteries.)
    ... Won't the MPP auto transfer switch recognize when the Generator is on and "bypass" the full 3500 watts (or as needed) from the generator?
    ... And when the Genearator is off, the AutoTransfer Switch would switch to battery right?
    ANY response would be helpful!
    --Coach

    I want to build a system like yours with 16 6v batteries (Trojan T-605).
    Can you please give me a diagram of the best way to hook up the 24v system using the 16 6v batteries?

    • @OffGridFreedom
      @OffGridFreedom  4 роки тому

      by window unit, you mean a Air Conditioner? I havent looked into that, im not sure how much power one takes to run. If you are using 16 - 6v batteries then you would be splitting them into 4 sets of batteries , each set would be 4 wired in series, and then the 4 sets wired in parallel to increase the amp hours. If you have that many batteries you would need alot more than 2 panels. I would have at minimum 1000w of panel, and you would need to have a fuse on the panels and the batteries. Theres so many variables that it is hard to suggest what fuse size to use.

Also, how many AH are your batteries? Just wondering what kind of loads you are able to carry in your cabin without needing to turn on the generator? Since its winter I am not getting much sun light, so I have unplugged my freezer but in summer I was running a 5 cu.ft freezer all day , and the freezer draws 80watts while its running. A system similar to this would cover your needs, the only thing that I would recommend is getting more panels then what I have, I only have 400w of panels and I think it would be better if I had around 800w of panel.

      There is a setting to change in the settings, it selects how you want the inverter to charge the batteries, you need to select the option that will use utility power when it is available and solar when it is not. You probably have it set to charge using solar power and utility power only if solar isnt available. My manual is out at the cabin so i forget what numbered setting it is.

    • @OffGridFreedom

      You can set it to automatically switch to generator/grid power once the batteries reach a certain voltage, or it can be set to always use the ac from generator/grid power and only switch to batteries when the grid/gen stops working. Or you can use it like how I am and only use the ac input to charge the batteries, as soon as I start the generator it senses power coming in and automatically starts charging and runs everything in the cabin using the gen power, and then when i shut the gen off it automatically switches back to the batteries.

What's the best inverter and battery setup to go with for two of these solar panels? Any help would be hugely appreciated.

    • @OffGridFreedom
      @OffGridFreedom  4 роки тому +1

      With large panels like those, you want to pay attention to the open circuit volts. They are 40.08v so you could either run the panels in series and you will need a inverter/charger that can handle 80 open ciruit volts, or it may be a better option to run them in parralel to keep it at 40v. The first thing I suggest you do is make a list of everything electronic that you will need to run , to get a idea of how many watts your inverter will need to be. Once you have an idea of how big of inverter you will need , then you can search for one that will handle those panels. As far as batteries go, I prefer going 24v or 48v because you can keep your cable sizes small because you are handling way less amps , but im not sure if that will be possible with a van conversion because it usually means having multiple 6v or 12v batteries in series and you might be limited in space.
