I have as many as 10-12, Juncos around my feeder in Michigan about 25 miles north of Grand Rapids near Sand Lake and they will be leaving soon at the end of April. But they really love it here and when you crush peanuts and put them on the deck floor that is their favorite snack, except you have to watch out for the Jays because they gobble them up too 😣

We've just recently started feeding wild birds in our yard. We'd been feeding crows on one side of our house for about a year, and were given some free wild bird suet that we set out on the opposite side of the house and IMMEDIATELY started seeing Dark-Eyed Juncos, Black-Capped & Chestnut-Backed Chickadees, a couple Song Sparrows, a Spotted Towhee, a few Steller's Jays that have lived in our back yard for most of my life, and one rambunctious squirrel who scares off the birds when he climbs the tree that one of the feeders is in, but seems to be able to coexist and eat with them while they're all on the ground eating scattered seeds.
I also saw a whole bunch of American Robins when I went out to my car on the side of the house we feed the crows on. They were all hiding when I first came out, and I only saw a couple looking at me to see what I would do, so I just started whistling at them and they slowly inched out of their hiding spots and I saw there were at least a dozen of them who had been tucked away who all came back out to hunt for worms. It was a pretty great moment.

Nice vid. Over here in south jersey (its mid winter) the juncos come everyday, they are small and bold, they let me sit with them and if I have food they come check me out, still haven't hand fed them tho. Beginner backyard birder (1yr+)

I love the Junco. They are so adorable. They hop around on my deck grabbing the crumbs under the woodpecker suet feeder. We have seen a lot of them this year in Midwest USA 😊

greenize1959 😊 morning, lovely little bird for sure. With the cold and mountain of snow we have here in Ontario we’re finding that a lot of our winter birds, like the Junko’s have moved a little further south this year, do you have lots of American Gold finch there as well? Our normal numbers are well down here this winter. 👍 enjoy, thank you for commenting. Bob.

@@gilligallou Yes, I have some American Goldfinches this year. I've been birding for about 15 years, and this past year is when I have seen more variety of birds than I ever have. It's very exciting!

I’m in Wisconsin and we are just discovering these cute little birds in abundance for some reason, not that I have never seen them just not like this. Anyone no where they nest? Thanks 😊

Pete Eastman hi Pete, love these guys, they mostly nest on the ground, sometimes in a shrub . Their breeding territory is in the Boreal Forest here in Canada, you’re likely see more number as they move to North to prep for nesting, enjoy, 👍 Bob

I have some here in North Carolina that are literally black and I figured it had to be diet that made them black versus the other juncos from dark gray to light gray. I feed them really high quality feed, but they still all vary wildly in color. I only ground feed, and all my bird friends have adapted.

Thank you Bob, this was a very helpful video. I just found you now and I subscribed =o) I have been wondering what this little bird that has been around the last few days.... thinking it wasn't a Junco... but maybe just a different variation? .... I think after watching this video. Really glad to have found you, fellow Canadian! We are located on Cooks Bay, Lake Simcoe.

I took a picture of the birds eggs, being careful not to disturb it. I'm so happy I have this sweet little bird nest in my flower basket.

I've had to squirrel proof my feeding post recently. Had one of the critters barking at me after it got through trashing the place. Had no idea they could be so vocal! Getting cold now so the visits should step up. All the best from the UK

I found a nest in my hanging flower basket, I tried to see what bird it is and I finally got a video and I believe it's a B.c. black eyed junco

So these Dark Eyed Juncos are in Ottawa for the winter ? If so what food do you put out to attract them ?
