MSG's rendering of this raga exemplifies the pathos and devotion this raga evokes. r g r s, N s d, m g m d, N d, connections are so beautifully illustrated.
MSG was so accomplished he could do graha bhedam (playing a different raga like Madhyamavati in the scale of Mohanam by changing relative position of the tonic within the scale) at the age of 5 ! TNK has heard him do one in Hamsanadam at the age of 5 (at the time he himself was only 7 years old) and wondered at what sort of training MSG had been through. My grandad lived next to their street and told me they would work from 4:30 in the morning till sundown or late night on most days.
Here we can see so many Hindustani phrases of their Thodi (eq. to Shubha Panthuvarali here), reproducing even the heavy taans phrases exactly like vocal. MSG sir demonstrates his ability to play in so many ways including his trademark high speed swaras with tremolo and one finger gamakas + staccato bowing, and the Western fingering of plain notes (what articulation!). Here he also played in 4 full ocatves. But above all what pleasing melody and soothing bhava! Imagine the sadhana he did...
For a long time MSG meant this item for me as it was played in the Sangeethasudha program of AIR Hyderabad. This is a confluence of Hindustaji, Carnatic and Western classical music. Unforgettable. When I listened to this on the radio, I used to feel like a brief spell of heavy shower had come down!
This is a classic from MSG. He has given Subhapanthuvarali elaboration an energetic interpretation rarely encountered making it sound more like Thodi of Hindusthani music. However he has rendered the keerthana itself in the traditional Carnatic music style. In swaraprastharam he has brought shades of Western classical violin. Amazing versatility. We are going to miss him forever now.
Sakshal God Almighty of VIOLINMusic I am unable to express my response every time I am all ears of this divinity in the melodically perfectioned variance Is this God man--that unfamiliar unusually versatility emerged from Godliness is well obvious to anybody who looks directly the distingueshed face of MSG
This is divine music appealing to the soul!
Pranams!
