Parur Sri Sundaram Iyer & Sri M.S.Gopalakrishnan- Violin Duet- 78RPM recording Manavyalakinchara- Nalinakanthi- Note: This is the first gramophone recording of MSG
According to Sri MA Sundaresan, this recording features MSG at about age 20-22 playing on extremely tense/sharp "gut strings" at a very high shruti (F#), which require true mastery to achieve tonal perfection like he does here. Also, the break in the recording at the charanam is because someone would physically flip over the vinyl EP to play the rest of the track.
Namaskaram to everybody. It was a wonderful playing by my Grandfather Prof. Parur A Sundaram Iyer and Padma Bhushan MSG my uncle. First the ragam was started by my Grand father and then continued by my uncle after 45 secs As I have learnt from my Grand father directly I know the slight difference from my experience. So please note that my Grandfather has started the Raga and not MSG alone.-M.A.Krishnaswamy Grandson and disciple of Sundaram Iyer .and son of Prof.Parur M.S.Anantharaman..
thank you very much for the Upload. I am Dr.M.A.Bhageerathi, grand daughter of Shri Parur sundaram aiyyar, at present working as Professor and Head, Department of Music, Queen MaRY'S COLLEGE, CHENNAI. My father is M.S.Anantharaman and my chiththappa M.S.Gopalakrishnan. There is no one in this world who could really play Manavyala kinchara like this. Fortunate to be the grand daughter of the great man
Yes... True... Also Ardhanaareeshwaram in Kumudakriya by Respected Shree M S Gopalakrishnan is marvelous... I used to listen this kriti with much pleasure each time. Yours family totaly dedicated to music.. Best wishes to all of you.
I had the great privilege of listening to a Ramanavami triviolin concert in Seshadripiuram, Bangalore in early 1960 featuring Parur Sundaram Iyer accompanied by sons MS Anantharaman and MSG with Manavyala as the main piece. They played the song for about 45 mts to a thrilled audience. Great moment!
Thanks a lot for this MasterPeice collection. Am Dr.Sudip Chatterjee, lecturer of Music at Rbu, kolkata & Soloist Violin . I belong to Parur Gharana, My Guruji Pdt.Ajit Mukherjee was the disciple of Parur S.Sundaram Iyer. I was fortunate to meet MSG at Doverlane Conference.Pranaam to my Dada Guruji.
Dear Sir, I am happy to know that you have a lineage from Parur style. Is it possible to get in touch with you. My name is R.Mohan and my contact number is 9448051108. I am totally fascinated by MSG and have been lucky to record both Hindustani and Carnatic renderings for Times Music. I am trying to get in touch with persons who have met MSG and their experience may through further insight about MSG. If possible please allow me to get in touch with you. With warm regards, R.Mohan
I am a super fan of the violin prodigy #MS Gopalakrishnan and the famous musician K.j.Yesudas once asked me that I gotta become the #sishya of MSG and he would recommend him to teach me,as I got no direct introduction to the violin legend. Although I did not obey his offer I could attend hundreds of MSG concerts wherever was taking place and with strenuous practice and determination I could develop a style that is a mixture of the North and South Indian Classics and I have a history of receiving the rare distinction of the enquiries of my listeners ,many often that whether I am a disciple of MSG and think that is my invaluable asset and wealth in this world.,although actually I am not endowed with 1 % efficiency or proficiency as the late violin gymnast. (It is not I am blowing my on trumpet ,If I disclose a reality that the only fiddler in my belief is myself, barring a few family members of the unparrelled genius who can play #vargas on violin ,using single finger ,single string ,and single bowing technic like MSG - But I think my capacity may be a nominal faction of inimitable #MS Gopalakrishnan sir.
I think this was their first 78 rpm together released in the early 1950s and the way this kruthi has been handled was captivating to me and I became their fan that moment!!👌👌👌
Violin sings! though played . contemporary of great Omkarnath Tagore. The bowing techniques are unique , blend of North & south.Kala Ramanath in Hindustani follows this (Violin sings)Great.
I perceive buttery softness and honey sweetness in this bowing - beauty beyond words. My humble salutations to the father & son duo ( late Vidwan Sri P. S. Iyer and late Vidwan Sri M. S. G.) . Thanks to Sri Raju Asokan for sharing this. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏾👍🏽👍🏾👍🏽👍🏾👍🏽👍🏾👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏾🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I was fortunate to learn this song in the same style from Sri Parur Venkatraman, cousin of MSG who had also learned from Parur Sundaram Iyer. The 3/4 sangathis in the pallavi are Parur specials and MSG used to play them exquisitely and effortlessly in his concerts.
Ever green rendering, with minute details of the raaga, I was fortunate to listen live to MSG , MS Anatharaman ...long time back.... Mridamgist can lean padams from each bhriga.....
What a finish, what an elan! I have heard this as a child when i was only 4 or 5 in one of those 78 rpm records. Now i am hearing this after nearly 50 years. I am happy with technology in the sense that it allows us to share and hear such gems which seem to have been long lost! Thanks so much!
Hey Shankar Krish, Hello from Prasad. How are you doing my dear friend. Long time since we met. Yes, there are two violins - I am pretty sure it is the dad (Sundaram Iyer) and son (MSG). The Ragam was played by MSG alone. Very sad day for me 01/03/2013. We lost MSG to the heavens. May his soul rest in peace.

Is the composition style MSG's or his dad's?
🙏🙏
Yes, I see MSG blends and plays on from about 46 sec. Pranams to Sri Sundaram Iyer avargal and Sri MSG.

Fantastic! Lilting alapana, bright Kriti rendition esp sangathis, and brilliant swaras -all hallmarks of Parur baani. Beautiful!

My Chithappa'
My Chithappa' and Guru
Masterpiece innovation as only MSG (and his father) can conceive! What would I not give to have been present when this blissful piece was played!

Outstanding, his talent had very few parallels. His gift is something that comes about once every 100 years. May his soul Rest In Peace.

Truely divine !
re-reading Shankar Krish's note again. He said it seemed like "three" violins ...
It seemed like only 2 to me. I will hear again...

Thanks to Sri. Raju Ashokan for remastering the audio from 78 RPM (Shellac, maybe?) disc! Great to listen to violin duet by Parurs!
Thanks for listening

Amazing stuff :)
The language becomes helpless to give me support to express my excitement with ecstasy
The Quality of sound itself is too much apart from the rest...just like Everest is on the Himalayas!
