I was 12 when this show aired on tv,back in 2000,I had even forgotten the name of the show, but I remembered only one thing, the statement in the promo,"Three years ago they came, forever altering the future of humanity" .I used that sentence to Google out the name of the show ,coz I loved its theme music .
90's scifi was so good. even the cartoons were good. like Exo squad. loved earth final conflict space above and beyond and star ship Andromeda among others. the scifi channel used to show this stuff but now just shows junk. wish some channel would put all of these shows back on.
The whole world was better in the 90's.... all was filled with hope, everything everywhere was steadily getting better... cold war over, hunger was diminishing, poverty was on the decline, war was at an all time low, even the bloody palestines and israeli's almost got to making peace... and then, at the turn of the century we became cynical bastards and let it all slip out of our hands. I would blame it on 911 but actually it already went sour before that.
Intros like this summed up perfectly why i love sci-fi so much ^^ Awe, eeriness, full of wonders thats what science fiction should be for me. Roddenberry really was the King of Science fiction.
I don't remember much of the backdrop of this series, but the only thing that keeps striking me is the Promo and the theme music, its theme music is serene.
Saw this show at 12 years old. Can only imagine where the series would've went had the studio played ball and gave the lead actor the salary bump he deserved
The actor doing the voicover is fantastic, and the music starting at :27 is absolutely amazing, the music preceeding it sounded like Star Trek music, essentially.
I basically worshiped this show, literally set my calendar by it, until they got rid of Boone. It ended for me after that. Liam was a decent protagonist... but he was no Boone.
This is the sort of project that should get a remake. Instead of doing reboots of previously successful movies or series, they should boots of films or series that didn't succeed (or not succeed as much as the could have) for various reasons, like budgeting, lack of funding, etc>) but still have a lot of potential.
I recognize that shot of the shuttle coming in to land between the skyscrapers. The tall tower behind it is First Canadian Place, around Bay St and King in Toronto.
From what I've read the production crew pretty much treated the actors like shit and kept messing them about which is why there were such a turnover with actors which just really ruined the show, shame because it could have been really good. Really do love the intro.
Guess you never noticed how bad the writing got as the show got further and further along.... that might have had something to do with them all eventually (except Flores) leaving!
Amy Lomeinie We got that, but from all I've heard they weren't treated the best, but I know it could be just rumors. They did seem to have fun when I watched the season 1 bloopers...
+UltimateSenshi At the root of it all I heard was the studio. The management kept changing and each time the new lot would change everything. I gave up watching it really at the end of season 2. It was a great shame as the first season showed a promise that I'd seldom seen in any scifi production previously. It had a dark edge that faded more and more as it went on, until it was as formulaic as possible. It would be nice if they could do a reboot, only this time leave the writers and cast alone.
I agree Amy, the first season was great, but the storyline went downhill fast. At first the taelons seemed this serene peaceful race and it seemed EFC would be a not be a standard 'fighting bad aliens' series. At one point, in a discussion about war and violence Da'an is asked if it is any different anywhere in the universe, and he says "it is different EVERYWHERE" making earth some kind of backwater hellhole full of suffering and pain that the taelons strive to liberate. the whole 'we want humanity to fight the jaridians" conflicted so heavily with that, as suddenly the whole universe seemed to be at war between jaridian and taelon holdings. The series would have been so much better if, like the taelons, humans had to develop from the atavistic nature of violence to survive, this endeavour maybe creating a rebellion of humans that wanted to 'stay human 'including violence and greed, perhaps supported by a jaridian-like split off tealon sect that thought somewhat similar, and/or wanted to off the taelons and humans alike and take earth for themselves or smth. I get the impression that (like with ST:TNG) roddenberry never wrote a lot of EFC material and they just got someone else to make up the rest, which could explain why a lot of lore in season one seems positive and peaceful, while later seasons depart sharply into hate, pain and fighting etc..
They really are two different genres . EFC was Sci fi . Buffy was Fantasy . Both had their good points and bad points . One important good point for me about Buffy : It had a spin - off series Angel - I was fan of that series to the end . EFC had the Taelons ; Angel had the law firm Wolfram and Hart . Spike actually became a hero - which was really nuts ! If you could close your eyes to humanity's betrayal , the Taelon's transcendence was very intriguing .
The sad part is that this show was the first time I ever heard the name "Gene Roddenberry", even though I knew that Star Trek and had seen bits of TNG when I was even smaller. It's probably because as a kid, I never bothered with reading credits and only paid attention to the visuals, music, etc, and of course the title card.
It's been YEARS. I was a child. Came back to see why I thought this show was weird, but I did remember 1 episode having its high moment. For some reason I do NOT remember the aliens looking like that. In fact I could remember them looking more translucent and Grey alien like with big eyes.
Once the other alien race were on the ship at the end I honestly didnt like it. It still wasnt bad but the feel of the show was too different for me to enjoy. I like both Liam and Boone tho :)
I love this show it just came to amazon this week anyway. Well funny story when I watched it as a 15 year old my cousin and I hung out alot on saturdays when this show was on. My cousin thought the Taelon's looked like they just stretched out condoms out over their heads. So my cousin would call this show "The condomhead show". He'd be like "I swear what else does that guy look like, but a guy wearing a condom on his head". Well fast forward 10yrs my beloved cousin died unexpectedly, now this show brings me back memories of him and I still think of his "condomhead" comments and they still make me laugh even today when I watch this show.
And you just spread your cousin's joke throughout the whole world. Thanks for sharing your story. Now, I'm going to forever see those aliens as the condom head aliens. By the way, those aliens were actually actresses. Yep, they were female. Amazing huh?
@@jbalien20 I thought Da'an was kinda cute as a kid. Knowing that was a woman years later gave me relief because I didn't know the gender of the person playing it. The more you know.
I have to say, a crossover between this and Harry Potter would be bitchin cool Harry with a Cyberviral implant, and a Skrill weapon creature on his wand arm! No one could defeat the Boy who lived, if he had that combination!

I do get where your coming from the Taelons were great as a mysterious race and the atavis were different from how the taelons described them or even when Da'an became an atavis, but I still say it did tie things up welland is one of the greatest sci fi shows made. Im surprised it wasnt big in UK
wow wow wow wow buffy was good and the series linked and grew brilliantly yes but come on the taelons were an awesome enemy cos you were never sure whether to trust even da'an and their tech was cool
Now, if we would have screenwriters like in the 90's combined with nowadays cgi we would probably have epic shows and movies. Unfortunately nowadays sci-fi is all cgi and no story (or at least stories that make sense or are any good).
While it was on the air... none. He was 6 years dead before it even hit tv. His wife/widow was responsible for the production of it.... and the idea of this show came sometime between Star Trek & Star Trek: The Next Generation, originally entitled "Battleground: Earth"
Sure I agree with that, but the character development was much better in Buffy, IMHO. The Taelons were a great enemy, creating that climate of trust/mistrust was brilliant, agreed, but I just don't put it on par with Buffy. EFC was a great show, but it jumped the shark when Boone was no more. Buffy was much more emotionally based, so they're hard to compare.
