  • This is a rare Alcatel 9109DA transportable from 1993 that operated on the GSM900 cellular standard. Going by a fellow french cellphone collector this was the very first GSM phone available in France back in 1993 when GSM was launched in France to replace their Radiocom2000 cellular network.

It's the father of the Alcatel 9109HA that I own and use as a daily phone (the Microtac-esque phone you mentioned in the video). :)
You've been lucky to catch signal immediately, early Alcatel phones have troubles at finding signal if they are in a scarce coverage area. Sometimes my 9109HA requires 2 minutes before detecting the network, going in a "Self Test, Please Wait" and then "Please Wait" loop until it finds the network. I'm using the phone with a 16K Gemplus sim from 2001. Yours is an Axalto sim instead. I wonder if that issue is due to the Gemplus chip...
The "Product Key" menu is the phone lock feature. The 9109 series was badly translated, you should see the grammar errors of the Italian localization, they are quite hilarious!

enzoakavpn I have since worked out that it was a 9109, thanks. My one needs a new battery though as it wont' power on. It's a chunky microtac-esque phone but quite durable.
I'm not particularly keen on alcatel phones as a whole but I do have a phone in my collection so it's only fair they get some attention too!! Certainly for this alcatel you need an older 5v 16k SIM card as newer ones just don't work. I'm not sure if mine is a Gemplus, Gemalto or an Axalto.
Interesting note about the "product key" menu entry....I can imagine that the french weren't very good at translating their phone menus!!

Indeed it seems they weren't. The menu on my 9109HA is badly translated and it's quite limited, but besides those things (and the fact that sometimes requires a couple of minutes to catch service), it's a very good phone. Actually, I'm using my 9109HA with the two original 700mAh Ni-Cd batteries from 21 years ago!

Oh thats quite impressive....the Ni-Cd's still hold a decent charge after all this time??? that's unheard of. I have only got one Ni-Cd that still holds a little charge for a dynatac 8000s. The rest are all duff or corroded. NiMh's still charge ok and I have a few of those as well as lithiums. the battery for the 9109HA that I have is completely dead. need to either get a new one or re-cell the old one.

Actually my two Ni-Cd batteries hold charge for two days. I've read on the internet that their standby time was 20 hours and 3 hours of talk time. The first one is used while the second one is NOS. I once had the contacts of a Belgian collector who had a stock of NOS 9109HA, I have to retrieve his contact so you can buy a NOS battery from him.

That's unbelievable!! You're getting two days standby from a 20 year old NiCd???????!!!!! I have never heard of a NiCd holding charge that long....even in ideal conditions they would not last that long! Or have you replaced the cells inside? thats always an option but it's fiddly and costly to do. let me know if you find the guys details. thanks.

Can I please get like a list of 1900GSM phones, I live in America and I think that one and many don't work in the networks here.

+Arakmatzu If you want to use an old brick in america you have two choices. Use an old CDMA phone which there are many of....Not going to list them as there are way too many. The other better option is GSM1900 (NOT GSM900)...but 1900 (often confused). There aren't many GSM1900 phones. For motorola there is the select range. Look at my video on those. basically the select 2000, 3000 and 6000e. also if you're lucky to find one and can afford it then go for a startac 7000g or 8000g.

      I'll look into that, thanks.

Outside America there are many many models you can still use but in the Americas/canada you are limited to about half a dozen models....also remember that the select range is usually locked to a particular provider. check out my video about unlocking them too.

You don't have the adapter? OK so do you have a working battery? I would have to measure the voltage and polarity on the pins. I presume you have checked www.google.fr and searched for the model number? because this is a french phone.

@@BrickCellphones Hi, your video helped me a lot but I have the same problem. I have the Phone but not the connector and the french google dont have it. Can you tell me how the pins are connected? Or which pins I have to connect.
