March of the Trolls
By Edvard Grieg / arr. Brian Beck
Item: 00-33859
Series: Alfred Concert Band
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Grade: 3
Edvard Grieg is best known for his eternally popular Piano Concerto in A Minor, as well as more than 150 songs and 66 lyric pieces. March of the Trolls is from his Lyric Pieces, Op. 54. Trolls are a constant theme in Norwegian folklore and can be viewed as the equivalent of our "boogie man." Far to the north in Norway where the winter storms whip the weather-beaten coasts, you will find dark forests with moonlit lakes, deep fjords surrounded by mighty snowcapped mountains, and long rivers and cold streams cascading down the mountain sides. This is where you might find the irritable, short-tempered trolls coming out of their hiding places after sunset, marching to wreck havoc on unsuspecting Norwegian households. Wait and see what your audience will do when the Trolls march up and down the aisles of your next concert! This title is available in SmartMusic. (3:48)

1:55 is one of the pretties clarinet solo’s i have ever heard
Helina Hoim frrrr, i'm second chair so i don't get to play it but ughh it's beautiful
I’m probably gonna mess it up 😂😂
I remember playing this years ago and my best friend who was 1st chair clarinet played the solo for me and I instantly knew why they were chair 1. It was so beautiful!!!
I’m the best clarinet frfr
I mean in middle school btw
I dunno what march these goblins doing, but it groovy.
im playing this at concert soon and i got the clarinet solo 🥲
The first part of this was used in "The Skeleton Dance" (1929), the very first Disney "Silly Symphony" cartoon short, starting about 03:46 in, when one skeleton plays another skeleton like a xylophone.
U g gh... I love everything about the super sweet calm part of the piece..
I t s b ea u t i ful . .
But it's hard as f*ck... staying in such high notes for such a long time that slowly.... i am dead in the end when we play this
i'm so excited my band director said we might be playing this piece this year, and i'm first chair so i might get the flute solo!
Violinist here! The flute solo is actually so pretty!! Wish you luck!! ❤
Wow the clarinets are actually important!
What do mean there always important
1AsianPanda ouch that hurt
as a clarinet player, this hurts
I play clarinet, hate to break it to you but in practically all songs clarinets are the main thing and flutes, saxes, oboes, trumpets, etc support the clarinet and feature it
Whatever rep you played was wrong bc clarinets are the heart of all wind ensembles

Ughhh I love this part in the clarinets
I played the timpani part for this song in my band and even though I was barely heard, it was still a fun song to play :)
Yess me too I played it yesterday during a concert on timpani it was so fun
I just joined my school orchestra today and played it for the first time sight read and it’s surprisingly an important part but super fun to play
What time mark is the timpani at?
I played this at an honor band this year! had so much fun.
I played this at honor band 2 days ago. Great song but my clinician almost bored me to death
The French horns in the front did so well and it sounded more than just 3 and the woodwinds did awesome as well. I come from somebody who has played both and each instrument is difficult but they played it beautifully.
Just in case you're like me and you were wondering where you had heard this song recently. I heard it in "Silly Symphonies - Skeleton Dance" as well as Season 10 Episode 1 of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I'm sure it's been in many more. Those are just the ones I know of.
ah silly symphonies
Preforming as an oboe 🥺🥺
I played this in 7th grade. It was amazing.
So did I lmao
7th grade? bruh im in 9th going on 10th and i dont know if my teacher will let us play this
i played in 6th grade, it was incredible
I played harder in 7th, but this in 8th
😧
3:08 is the best part
Yeessss the timpanis going hard at it was so fun
I wouldn’t agree, but the part I’m listing below only applies to the flute and piccolo, because I hear this part every time the band rehearses

Everytime we play this section I think “op it’s time to rage!”
We just started this piece today and the timps in it are so so good
Facts
What a great piece!! I'm trying to pick out a good one for our community band 😊
Well I hope you chose it. I would recommend
this gives me fat Hall of the Mountain King/some song from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker (can't think of it rn) in the beginning for about 15 seconds
Well even though it is arranged the original piece was made by Grieg who also composed hall of the mountain king! I guess Grieg has that very unique style
The beginning reminds me of like a old timey fairytale show where no one talks and it just animation and idk why but to me it’s really nostalgic 😭
In our highschool we have to bands symphonic and wind,I'm in symphonic, the lesser if the two and our director said this is challenging and it really is,I can't wait for competition is March. We are also playing torch of liberty by Karl l. King and resplendent light by Tyler s. Grant.
Fun fact I'm pretty sure that this was the music that the origonal spooky scary skeletons video used in 1929
I played the second flute for Musicfest nationals where i live, it was great!! this is such a good piece!!
I remember playing my timpani part on this song. Its so fun that you can be so loud on timpanis on this one!
when our band director was putting this on the speakers the brass was so loud it was crunchy lmao
I love this song
Did this in high school in Brady, TX with Butch Crudgington. RIP Mr. C.
Yeah I’m playing this tmr for UIL and I’m a saxaphone and since my band is trash I’m substitute for all of the solos expect flute and French horn
we got all 1s during UIL this year when we played this! I played 2nd trombone part :)
Im pksyong this for concer competition cant wait to fully learn it trumbone for life

Trombone part is booty cheeks but great song
the clarinet solo with g# to c# is so annoying☹️
i love the saxes but not the flutes
