  • How to Reset a Nissan CVT Transmission. Learn the step-by-step methods to reset your Nissan auto transmission and perform a TCM relearn. In this video, I, Brian from Honest Mechanic, walk you through the process of resetting a Nissan CVT transmission, also known as TCM reprogramming or TCM relearn.
    The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is the brain of your Nissan's CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), controlling shifting, torque converter lockup, and other transmission functions. Over time, due to wear and tear or software issues, your TCM may need resetting. This is similar to rebooting a computer, clearing out error codes and allowing the TCM to relearn your driving habits.
    I cover three methods for resetting a Nissan transmission: the gas pedal method, using an OBD scanner, and disconnecting the battery. Each method is explained step by step, making it easy for you to perform a Nissan TCM reset at home. However, if you're unsure about any part of the process, it's always best to consult a professional mechanic.
    Whether you call it a Nissan CVT transmission reset, Nissan TCM reset, Nissan transmission reset, or Nissan TCM reprogramming, the goal is the same: to resolve issues like rough shifting, delayed engagement, and other transmission problems. By resetting your Nissan transmission, you give your TCM a fresh start, allowing it to relearn and adapt to your unique driving style.
    If you've been searching for "how to reset a Nissan CVT transmission," "Nissan TCM reset," "resetting a Nissan transmission," or "TCM relearn," this video has the answers you need. I provide clear, concise instructions for each method of Nissan TCM reprogramming, empowering you to take control of your vehicle's transmission health.

    I got a 2024 nissan kicks with 11.5k kms (6 mos) and got an error of check engine light, the technician already tried by removing the negative terminal of the battery and check engine light still exist, then connected a small obd reader which doesnt help as well, and then connected to a laptop/computer and found out its the transmission, they cleared the error and told that if the check engine light comes back again better bring to nissan showroom since it still have the warranties… thanks for this video it helps a lot

    I replaced my cvt stepper , and I solved the problem. A couple weeks of driving, it got stuck in first gear . It would not go no more than 20 mph. Do it needs to be reset?

      Hi Frank, apologies for the late response. After replacing the CVT stepper motor, if your car is stuck in first gear and won't exceed 20 mph, it's possible that the transmission control unit (TCU) needs to be reset or reprogrammed to recognize the new part. CVT transmissions often require recalibration after significant changes like this.

    If you have an Android phone and want to purchase CVTz50 and any multitude of BT OBD scanners (I use Veepeak), it can do all this. Even relearn things I didn't realize it kept up with. There's more data coming from the TCM than anything it seems, especially in a vehicle with instant monitoring capabilities. I can put the CVT on a log and get every piece of data it sends... takes a minute to parse, but highly useful, like flow rates/pressures/ratios/temps/etc. It can also reset CVTF and relearn, engine braking adjustments and Idle Air/Idle RPM relearn. It can also do engine timing (advance/retard or power/meh) and some kind of power balance relearn.
    Caveat: Learning curve.

      EDIT: I think the power balance relearn is on AWD models so it knows better how to split torque front to rear.

    I am also one of the victims of Nissan CVT issues. I see sudden shifts to lower transmission and hence high RPM with no speed increasing. I got transmission fluid changed but did not help. The car only has 70k miles. There are no engine error codes when I got inspected and there is no engine light. My car costs less than the cost of replacing the transmission. I badly need some cheaper solution. Any suggestions?

      Did you test the battery? The mechanic at the dealership told me he’s seen several Nissans come in thinking they needed a transmission and turned out there battery was so bad it wasn’t supplying the right voltage to the transmission causing it to malfunction. Worth a shot to test it

    I've just completely rebuilt a 2015 nissan versa cvt transmission with a remanufactured valve body, all new seals and clutches. Kept the original rom and tcm. I have an Icon t8 scanner that allows me to reset learned values, calibration, g value, cvtf deterioration. Is that good eneough to use the car or do i still need to do more? I havent used the car yet as I'm worried to damage it before its properly set up. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. The T8 scanner does have a function for new control valve reset, but its faulty and doesnt complete the function, it freezes and hours later nothing has completed.

    My car has been running a little funnny rpm’s revving up and down, sometimes a creeping start stuff like that finally check engine light came on so I checked the codes… it gave p0841 so I changed the fluid hoping it was low. I want to try to change the transmission fluid pressure sensor but can’t find the part anywhere… is this a useless mission? I’m afraid a mechanic will just say I need a whole new transmission

    • @HonestMechanicChannel
      @HonestMechanicChannel  Місяць тому +1

      Hi, You're on the right track by checking the P0841 code, which relates to the transmission fluid pressure sensor. Replacing the sensor is not a useless mission, as it could solve the issue without needing a full transmission replacement. Difficulty in finding the part might mean checking with a dealership or specialist parts provider. If the sensor doesn't resolve the issue, a mechanic should diagnose further before suggesting major transmission work. Always rule out simpler fixes before assuming the worst.

      @@HonestMechanicChannel I went to a shop and they did a “diagnostic”, I had a feeling all they did was read the code because he called me only 30 mins later saying it needs a new transmission. When I got there I asked did he test the transmission or look at anything else he said yeah we did a full work up. So I asked him to make a report of all the findings he literally wrote discovered code p0841 and suggest new transmission per dealership recommendation. 😭

      Oh and he charged me $140 for that lol. I told him I already had the code I expected him to actually test the sensor or do something to see if I did in fact need a transmission or not. He said you can’t test the sensor because it’s inside… is that true?
