Lyrics:
God only knows why we were born to burn // If God is my witness, he'll see that all is not well // Christ, what a sight for sore eyes // Looking down on us, all the children that you despise // A bullet in the neck doesn't feel much like love // A message of rejection sent from above // No flags, no holy books // I'll be in hell with the misunderstood // The sons and daughters that you wished to forget // A desperate picture of god's regret // Are we perfect mistakes? Or almighty fuck ups? // One thing's for sure, he doesn't fucking love us // Hate must weigh on you like a broken cross // Hate; the dividing line we'll never step across // Outcast and reject // Father, father, how I've let you down // A fucking tyrant in a hollow crown.

Agreed. This is the only band in this genre I listen to anymore.
ThatKidYouDontKnow1 Have you listened to Parkway Drive?
Can vouch. Good stuff. Checkout Sleepwalker by them.
+JPR I have, I loved Atlas, and their new album is really good too. Even still, I drift towards Architects more than any other band, they make me feel. No other band has that effect on me.
ThatKidYouDontKnow1 Yeah, I definitely feel the same way man.
The meaning of the song is really effective, but I'm just here for BLEGH's, Screaming, brutal drops and Djent.
Not disappointed.

@@wozaow valid take. My understanding is that God created us not as slaves - but gave us free will. Obviously he wants perfection. We live in a broken world and we are all going to make mistakes, because we are not perfect like God. (If you believe in any of that stuff.) Still doesn’t change the fact this fuckin song rocks !

As a Christian who loves this song, and relates to the sense of abandonment and loneliness in the lyrics, I am reminded that Christ felt no different in this world:
“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” / "My God, My God... why have you forsaken me?" - Jesus Christ before dying on the cross (Matthew 27:46 | Psalm 22).
it was the human version of God crying out the the real version of Him just like any typical human when they're in the center of pain and agony, same with Job when he cursed the day he was born. However both of them never blasphemed God, just simply complained
I am a God. How do I know? Everytime I try and talk to God, all I can hear is myself speaking.
That's so deep that i found oil.
that's what Kanye said

everysingle one of us has a particule of god inside us. we're all gods but we cant reach enlightment due to our human form, desire and carnal ambitions..
MrPorto Tiger the problem with people who think like you is the fact that you don't question anything.....you hear an 'idea', a concept that you like very much and just believe it because it fits your criteria. The fact is that you don't have any proof of anything....and neither scientist have absolute proof of their theorys.....and that's amazing to me....with all their years of study and experiments they still say they don't have a complete answer, and that every theory can be 'unprooven' with enough evidence (bassicaly most of them are agnostic, as am i)....religious people don't want to chalenge their minds, but believe in divinity so they can feel special and safe....
there are an infinite posibilities how we came to be.....the one with god and fallen angels is as probable as believing in a flying spaghetti monster....
just accept your existence like it is and don't wish for imaginary paradise that contradicts itself in so many ways. Saying you have god particles in yourself is such an egocentric statement....you put yourself above everything just because you don't understand why you exist....that's basic behaviour of non-critical thinking.
Everything is changing, but this era of Architects was on top.

Been a rough couple of weeks. I work as a surgical technologist and my wife is a counselor. We’ve both had several really rough cases lately. This song expresses how I feel right now. And its comforting to know I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Me? :D
Its interesting that everyone in this comment section are fundamentally what this song is about. Maybe you aren't the ones causing wars or corruption in this world, but your constant arguing over shit so irrelevant and small in a universe where there are so many bigger things than what your fucking views on religion are, is the meaning behind "he doesn't fuck love us". IF god were to really exist, do you honestly think he would be proud of his creation of the human race? Look at yourselves. Fighting over shit that LITERALLY DOES NOT MATTER when you look at existence as a whole. Humans think they are the center of the universe when in reality, we are all a bunch of fucking parasites destroying ourselves and the home we live on. Great song as always, Architects.
Not saying I disagree with you, but there is more at stake here than just an idea. Religion is one of those things that has to go. There are too many minds in this world that stop searching for answers because they think the answer is god. Brilliant minds, potential doctors, physicists, chemists, etc. that never come to be because they are stymied by religion. We need these people because between the exponentially growing population and climate change, we're going to be fucked without them. Some things are worth fighting for. And this absolutely does matter.
***** Well said.
***** I'm sorry but I highly doubt that a person's religious views are as important in the grand scheme of things as people make it out to be.
***** thats my point! thats the entire point of this song! something like that is effecting the entire human race and for what...?
***** Not a problem! Probably should have worded myself better
Evil is not something that's caused, it's the absence of good.
So is good something that isn't caused either but the absence of evil? If neither is caused but only being absence of each other how does that make sense?
Nope they have different concepts. Turn off the lights in your room, it's dark. Turn it on, it's bright.
It's not darkness itself, it's dependent on the light. Which defines the term 'shadow'. So really darkness is shadow; the absence of light.
There is no original source of darkness, only light like the sun in the dark space.
Johnnie Kimmie If God is all-powerful, then he can illuminate any dark evil corner. He chooses not to. That means he accepts and even encourages the existence of evil. Think about that.
Actually it works the other way around.. but ok
One of the most powerful, and most moving vocalists in the metal scene 😃
I just love the lyrics of the song. It's a slap in the face by reality. It simply is the cold harsh truth that we all needed to hear. The melodies and vocals are very powerful too. The ambient guitar parts between each chorus, I love them.
I found Architects late... like 2 years ago, even tho im listening to variety of metal music for 15+ years now. its impressive to me how modern they sounds and thats almost 10y old album.
Back then I use to listen to this song everyday and felt like it was true that God didn't love us... I was atheist at the the time and despised anything that had to do with God because of sonethings i was going through mentally. But now years later I realized God loves everyone especially the one reading this comment. I was lost at the time and God gave he hope and a supernatural peace... John 3:16 God so loved the world that he gave us his only begotten son and whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.
Jesus loves everyone, he's been through the same things as us. He is the relatable one (:
I hope Tom found God's love after all suffering from his illness in this life 🙏RIP T//S
How the fuck do you even sit down and begin to write such a masterpiece. Unreal talent
If you really pay attention to the music, the ambient keyboard adds so much power to Architects songs.
It's good to see a lot of comments here arguing and thinking about something that has become an issue in today's society(to many people including me, let's face it), wether it's positive or negative, right or wrong. Let's get educated. That's the power of music and how it express throught itself.
Honestly the best metalcore song ever written.

+Evan May 0:47

I personally really like the part from 2:50 'till like 3:13
2:12 to 2:55
Powerful message indeed. As a Christian, I feel very sorry for the condescending demeanor of many Christians (including those in the Westboro Baptist cult). I have not been a Christian for a very long time, so I understand the kind of contempt that some "so called Christians" have for us "sinners." But I came to realize that Jesus came to those who knew that they were "perfect mistakes" and "almighty f**k ups," not the overly pious religious types that thought they had it all together (Mark 2:17). I like that this song acknowledges the imperfect nature of humanity. I really dig that. Just never forget, just because many judgmental "Christians" look down on you and don't love you, doesn't mean that God doesn't. Peace and love folks!
This! You couldn't have succinctly summarised Christianity than this. God is love and he loves you no matter what. It's only over judgemental people pretending to believe in something that is not true that gives us a bad name.
Respect bro! Peace to you too!
I don't really understand true christians too much. Why have such a strong belief in something that has never been shown to you first hand? All there is, is a book that people claim to have been created by god. I'm not saying a god doesn't exist, but why don't some people like you have a bit of doubt that some magical being doesn't exist? And if its because you want to be happy about the way you die, or for who you are. It still seems to trouble me that there isn't any doubt to it. Maybe being raised into a strong belief of it is what does it.
Popabuddy1 Hey dude, I don't have all the answers, but if you message me privately, I would love to chat with you about your thoughts on religion and give you some of my views if you would like. Let me know!
War an Hate to you. :*
This song is just as much about the hateful and meaningless passages in the bible as it is modern followers of the religion. Let's not play it off as the religion itself isn't problematic, outdated and inundated with useless belief systems.
I'm Christian and I cannot agree to the message of this song...
..but having said this, I can certainly say that the Searle brothers can whip up some insane riffage! Sounds almost like the Hollow crown days. Am stoked for this album!
You just spoke my mind XD
i really dont want to offend you in any ways and totally respect you being a christian, but why dont you agree? in my eyes god is either not existing or hes not caring about us in any way.
but thats just my opinion, i dont say i am right, its just what i think :)
@@tobitau89 I know it's been 7 years, but I also want to respectfully know
I'm a Christian and I think this song is incredibly powerful. I get chills everytime I listen to it. I think more people of faith should contemplate the nature of God. A personal relationship with God is important, but what is a relationship with someone you don't really know? It seems like a lot of people of faith treat prayer like they're talking *at* Him, and not like two way communication. Between the Old and New Testaments, the nature of God changed drastically. So much so that we saw the conception of a new Abrahamic faith in Christ.
And really, would God be happy with the world as it is? Just because you love your children doesn't mean you can't be disappointed in them.
I see a lot of Christians in the comments say they disagree with the message. But I think its important to consider it. At one point God sent the Great Flood to reset all of humanity. Wrath isn't impossible for him. I think treating the notion of God like he doesn't experience changes of emotion is underestimating how complex our creator truly is.
And I don't think questioning God means you're being disloyal to Him. Let that inquiry be something that strengthens your relationship with Him.

Best architects album ever. Can't even explain how good this is.
Look at all these people attempting to look smart by arguing about religion and claiming what's right or wrong. You guys probably can't see the big picture here. It's the fact that you can't respect the perception and beliefs of other people that causes war. You don't need to insult each other. If you can all learn to do that, you can learn to live in peace.
Smart words man
One of the ten commandments is "respect thy neighbor" That's all we need to live in peace.
Christopher Katzer Couldn't agree more mate, although prepare yourself for people who would argue with you about those commandments, lol
You're the first to disrespect others by judging us. We are free to speak out against what we think is the situation happening and related with the message that the band wants to give and the pictures shown in the video. Respect our opinions mate.
Pau satorra Herbera Disrespected you? Seriously? In what way? Yeah you are all free to express your opinions.Arguing is ok but most people here are crossing the line. The problem comes in when someone insults someone just because they don't agree with each other. Know the difference. I never said "SHUT THE HELL UP SO WE CAN HAVE PEACE."
Sometimes I feel kind of guilty for singing along to songs like these because I'm a Christian, but then I'm like "ah, fuck it. I'm not depriving myself of badass music for the sake of being good." Im just going to enjoy the lyrics for what they mean to people, even if I myself can't relate to them because let's be real, those are some darn good lines.
these guys did a meaning behind the song interview and basically this song is directed to anyone using religion in selfish/harmful way in a way to justify their actions of being a shitty human. If you're a legitimate good person and is a Christian that isnt like the type I explained above. then this song isnt directed to you
We need more people like you in the world. I mean, I'm no Christian but I have my beliefs. And it's really interesting to hear other people's points of view, especially when it's this emotional. They killed this song, and I still feel loved from the deity in which I believe.
To supplement what +Sammy Nevarez said, here is a blog from Tom:
architectsofficial.tumblr.com/post/76328164207/discussion-about-the-meaning-of-broken-cross
I know what you mean but like Sammy says it's not directed towards good people. So many have such a blurred vision of Christianity and other religions due to the people that use religion to profit themselves. One thing I love about Architects is the message they send in there lyrics. Haven't heard one song that hasn't hit me right in the feels. Also so stoked I finally found a vinyl LP of Lost Forever//Lost Together, and pre ordered the new album coming out in May.
+Leora Ojadi the thing about this song, how i see it at least, is that the lyrics are not against religion but what man does of and with it. The lyrics are saying that people are using religion as a mean to a end and that if their was a god well he would be dispointed. at least that's my two scense
I've been a "Christian" for the majority of my life. I find songs like this to be riveting and beautiful in content. It's not offensive or blasphemous, it's real. It's honest and passionate towards the story of Christ just as any Chris Tomlin or For Today song is. Questioning God, his agenda, or his existence has been at the center of almost every Biblical figure from Noah to Job and so on. If you follow the Bible, and those who teach it, blindly you will end up either a closed minded bigot or missing the whole point. These lyrics are truths hard to swallow.
Why cant all Christians be as open minded as you?
Carlos Pardon To be honest, my friend, I wouldn't really call those people "Christians". Those are what we in the "heavy music community" generally call posers.lol
I believe in God. But I also agree with a lot of what this song is talking about. The human race is fucked up, and religious people can be the worst at times. Why can't we just accept that people are different? I believe God created us to be unique and have different ideas and talents and everything else. You don't believe in God? That's fine. You believe in Allah or Buhdah or whatever else? Sweet. You're gay? Go for it man. We're all just pushing along on this rock trying make something of ourselves. So what's the point in fighting over religion? I don't even think God wants that. I'm obviously different than most people in this comment section since I'm not saying "if a god exists" I'm pretty confident in my beliefs. But I embrace being different. And I respect others who are different. If everyone was the same the world would be boring. But if we keep trying to force everyone to be the same there will always be conflict.
Because of all the nasty shit in the bible... People are slowly beginning to realize they are more moral than the character that book is based on.
Perfect, hit the nail right on the head. Sadly, i don't believe the human race will EVER overcome our differences. Think of the 1000s of years we've had and we still can't.
anasasisxenophontis That's not even what i was talking about. Plus the Bible is "based" off of lots of characters, and all the "nasty shit" is there to show the flaws of the human race that will never change.
Cheshhie90 It probably won't. But the most we can do is teach are kids to be acceptant of others and at least try to make some of the next generation better.
Jackson Pickens No, that shit is there because mankind is fucked up. And men wrote the bible.

One of the greatest metalcore songs of all time
2:51 is perfection! The music fits the video incredibly!
Guys, the song isn't an anti-religious statement. It expresses what it's like to feel abandoned by God, your supposed creator, in your suffering ("a desperate picture of God's regret"), and calls against hatred initiated by religion ("hate must weigh on you like a broken cross"). I believe in God and think it's key to respect all religions, but I can relate to the song.
"A match made in heaven" came out a little over a month ago but already has half the views of Broken Cross. ARCHITECTS IS BADASS.
Wish I could blast this in a church loud as hell
you are so edgy. church is bad, atheism is cool
Very tempting
Sure thats fine, but I'm willing to bet your sorry ass can't articulate why you wish that, other than wanting to look cool by representing the dark side. Architects themselves said this was not an anti Christian or religious song. Grow up kiddo, before its too late
Hehe loud as hell

to everyone out there arguing about how religion manipulates people etc...it's pretty straight forward that this song has nothing to do with religion. it's aggression directly towards God. i believe we as humans should feel more responsible for our acts and stop blaming God. If you re an atheist you cannot blame God anyway
Though I am Christian (I respect everyone's beliefs and faiths, for although I can dislike and disapprove of someone's actions, I must love my neighbor as myself)
Just wanted to say I respect this band and even this song because (if you read their blog on Redditch about Broken Cross) they are singing against those take religion for an excuse for discrimination and to hurt others. Like beating someone up because of their sexual orientation, or be a suicide bomber and what not. And that their god is not a god that loves us.
Anyways, cheers!
this reminded me of day of the dead by hollywood undead....that song is about people who want or try to earn money from religious people
Much love from an agnostic! You are what religion needs
Your religion is cancer. You're a virus that spread it. Be gone.
Finally, someone who gets it.
I am a Christian too, and love architects as well. People, god is NOT religion. Religious people are the ones who crucified Christ because they don't liked him. They killed him because their religion was bigger than their love! The real god loves us and that's why we are in this world, to love and forgive one another no matter what. Even in our worst days. LOVE 4 ALL

@@kilo_ktks come to Islam my friend.
@@kilo_ktks I mean it is pretty obvious that the God that created us is actually the devil. And no, you wouldn't have ended your life even if you realized that god doesn't exist because you are made to want to survive; it's an instinct. There is really no need for rationalization.
@@kilo_ktks No one or nor any group can tell you what's correct. Nobody knows.

it would be so good if the released this style again 😢
I have the most comfortable life any one could dream of. And yet I suffer deeply for the suffering and torment of all - humans and animals. And then the meaningless, the hopelessness and despair of all and everything. This song hits exactly there.
I'm not christian or follow any religion, but I do believe that god exist, maybe I don't know if he's good or not, or something, I just believe that we as humans we are not just a coincidence. But bands like Architects or Parkway Drive have those feelings that really gets you, you can't deny that their lyrics are sincere, and gives you a message no matter if you're in a religion or you are just atheist, they are trying to tell you with their songs that at least don't trust, give yourself the chance to doubt, like don't believe everything that people says is true just because is written in the bible.
So humans can't be a coincidence, but God can? Not trying to start an argument just a discussion.
Mmmchutney What I meant is that humans are so imperfect that there's gotta be something or someone else above us, like more powerful that could create all of this, or who knows maybe God is all universe, everything that exists, even us could be God or part of God, I don't know. The thing is that this is a tough topic to talk about. I'm probably too wrong but that's what I think.
Hansel Drahonovsky Yeah I getcha :P

Always tears in my eyes when listening to Architects... such emotion and power !
Anyone else a fellow Christian who's had fun times explaining their music taste to people?
Hey It's Lily I love you for that
Nope, but I am a Christian too.
Only to my wife & kids.
Yes, very much so
Yeah. But are Architects Christian
They've only kept getting better and better
This is one of the few songs that completely erases me from everything but the pure bliss of the music. I can't explain it,I cant explain the feeling, but it takes me home.
Can't get this song out of mind, 4th day smashing it over and over 😔 so fking GOOOOOOOOD :0
God didn't create us, WE created God.
Love your comment man! :D
havoren Thanks man :) May god forgive us lol
And you know this how?
BravoTwoZero Sadek He told me after I made him a figment of my imagination
Interstellar.
so many good bands, i love metal and all it's subcultures! *-*
We all seek God at our own pace. I live this band because this song proves that they believe a higher power. To not question what we believe would be foolish.
They're outspoken atheists. You clearly missed the point of the message though.
***** Unicorns. Elves. Pixies. Mentioned them, must believe in them.
This song proves nothing of the sort!
Atheists are not against god(s), we don't hate god(s), we aren't ashamed, nor are we mad at god(s), any more than we are at leprechauns and fairies. We simply do not accept the ridiculous claim that any god(s) exist.
We acknowledge the CONCEPT of god(s) as something that other people believe in and this song calls those people into question.
+The One, your comment is equivalent to me saying "The one is a believer in Allah, he just denies Allah because he's ashamed or he hates him" see my point? You can't hate something that DOESN'T EXIST.
Definitely missed the point of the song, "god only knows" is used in a FIGURATIVE sense, it's a figure of speech meaning 'no one knows'.
You really should question your beliefs more because you look like a fool.
I have a few words and sentences that you should look up:
ATHEIST
'GOD ONLY KNOWS'
PROOF
CONCEPT
***** no, we genuinely don't believe him because we think for ourselves. You take the reason why you don't believe in other gods, and that's why we don't believe in yours. We acknowledge god because it is highly controversial, people ask us why or how we cannot believe in god, and most of us are former christians. And what James said is true. To not question what you christians believe would be foolish.
The message behind this song sends chills through my body.
"I'll be in hell with the misunderstood" is such a moving line
I actually think we'll finally have a monstrous album like Hollow Crown/Ruin
Dervy Every Architect's album is Monstrous.
Lyrics, emotions and sound yes that's what they are!!!
Listen closely what they're singing about!!!
Very emotional and important.
He's not just screaming......♡
This is one of my absolute favorite songs. Jesus it was so well made I get goose bumps every single time i hear it. ughh architects is PERFECT.
So good. Can't wait for the new album.
am i the only one that hates the lyrics but loves the actuall music
Probably..
+Tala The Wolf your not alone
+shorock96 kk lol
I actually agree. the vocals are awesome and the music is really intestine and nuanced and unique but the lyrics are pretty unoriginal and derivative.
I had the exact same reaction. I felt the song was amazing but hated the lyrics since I am a christian and found it completely wrong to sing those lyrics. But I read the reason why Tom wrote this and when I understood the actual means of these lyrics, it instantly became one of my favorites songs on the album. Read the post by tom about the lyrics.
This song breaks and rebuilds. Like we all must.
Architects keeps melodic metal and metalcore alive and worth listening to.
Remember, this song isn’t specifically anti Christian.
“It’s only some of those facets that are the target of our vitriol on Broken Cross. I suppose they could all come under the umbrella of 'Fundamentalism’. So, if you were offended by the song, please ask yourself “Am I a fundamentalist?”. I can be pretty sure that there are ZERO religious fundamentalists that listen to Architects, if there are, then fair enough, this song is about you. Be offended, I promise you won’t be as offended by my beliefs, as I am of yours.
Let me be clear (because I’m treading on egg shells/landmines here). When I talk of fundamentalists, I am not talking of one religion in particular. I’m sure all religions have their extreme rights and extreme lefts. Simply put, I am talking about anyone who thinks it is fair to discriminate, condemn (that’s the same thing, innit?) or worse, attack and even kill people, for who they are - all in the name of religion. “
Tom wrote this in a blog post to explain the song better.
4 years ago today, rest in peace Tom.
One of the best hardcore metal tracks I have ever heard in my life! I love the older Architects so much!
CANT WAIT TO SEE THESE GUYS MARCH 28TH!!
Noah Maddox fuck yeah bro
just saw them yesterday, fucking amazing! definitly want to see them again, what a fucking hell of a show!
i recomend everyone to see them live, and sam carter has such energy, and he's voice live is just like the album, just incredible.
Being seeing them in 2 months!!!! ARGGGG
Saw them in march
Punched in the neck in the Moshpit XD
Sam carter is fucking awesome as is the rest of the band :')
SO SICK OF THE COMMENTS ABOUT THE MESSAGE OF THE MUSIC. LETS GET SOMETHING STRAIGHT.
as a vocalist, my lyrics and music are entirely my own views. my own demons being let out. they're not meant to fucking influence a bunch of kids who are desperately trying to grasp on to someone else's beliefs or bash someones beliefs.. don't fucking come to youtube for religion or atheism. there are churches for religion and forums for atheists. this is music. not preachers on a stand. enjoy the music or don't. but dont dig into the meaning to influence your views. just enjoy the music. appreciate the emotion he puts into it. Sam obviously has a lot to say, but no one has to listen. its a fucking song for gods sake
People fail to recognise this epic song's meaning......Anyway you said what had to be said .
We all have different interpretation of song lyrics but duh many people decide to be dicks eventually
AngelFromHeaven000 yuh
You're right. Although it is quite interesting if you try to understand another persons beliefs. I mean, not in a way that you change your own opinion about religion but to learn each view of this matter.
Anyway, this song is a hell of a song!
(Hope you understood what i tried to say hehe)
Andrew Marshall actually Tom writes the lyrics mainly, but I agree with what you said nevertheless :D
Andrew Marshall And you screaming at everyone won't do shit. This kind of thing has been going on for a long time and i'm pretty sure you're rant here isn't gonna fix shit. So stop complaining and ignore the comment section. Its that simple.
This isn't even a song, it's more like a story 📚📖
Lol young chris haha
Ive heard of these guys for the longest time and I can't believe it took me so long to finally listen
Oh my. This band has something that most bands don't have anymore.
Hating themselves?
I really like this and I just discovered them! I am a christian but I really love to hear other people's opinion on these topics. I am a person who really excepts everyone's opinion, that is why I like this type of music. I really enjoy this song for many reasons! But still, god bless these guys ^-^
One thing's for sure ,He so much love us !
Anyone else laying in bed head banging to this banger?
