  • I completed my first Lord of the Rings diorama! An epic duel of an iconic scene where Gandalf faces the Balrog. The project took three weeks and for me it was an important milestone to reimagine this epic scene with a different scale game than usual. I had a lot of fun with this framed diorama. Hope you enjoy!

Amazing I love how the black 3.0 absorbs the light it truly makes it look like the Demon is coming out of the darkness amazing.

I know that Gandalf is basically an angel incarnate. Still, imagine being a loremaster, rather than a Diablo like sorcerer, facing a giant evil made of flame, hatred and shadow, and you know that if you can't stop it, it's the end of the world, as it would take the Ring. Here, even such a being really know fear and an incredible pressure, having to bravely standing against evil and darkness incarnate.
Really an amazing peice of work! It totally encapsulate the feeling.

I adore the bravery you showed when putting that strong black over the wonderful flame effect on the Balrog. You covered up so much of the beautiful work but it was the right call. The finished figure looks like a flame suspended in shadows.
Putting the sprinkled effects in and just accepting so much randomness, giving up the control was another brave step. This artistic bravery is one of those important factors that devide the average painters from the true masters I believe. This video inspires me to strive to be more daring when painting my own minis.
That insane contrast between Gandalf and the Balrog in color, size and clarity works so well. It creates two points of focus in this piece. The confrontation of the wizard and the monstous demon becomes an optical confrontation as well. I just really like this diorama!

    Truly awe-inspiring!
The mastery of OSL shown in the depiction of floating embers coming off its back shown on the back wall of the diorama make it seem as if they are drifting off into the depths behind it.
The single light that is Gandalf, holding off the crushing weight of darkness, not just of the Balrog, but of the darkness that will envelop all of Middle Earth if he and the rest of the Fellowship fail...

I love this Roman. I watched Lord of the Rings for the first time last week, this is perfect timing for me. I loved boylei hobby times version of this scene but yours is another level. The use of the 10mm Gandalf and the view point behind him really captures the feel and exponential power and courage of the grey wizard. Congratulations on this piece

Products like Black 3.0 are seldom justified in miniature painting, they just swallow up all the detail. But this was entirely justified, and as good a use as I've seen in a long time. The Balrog looming from the utter dark is epic.
When you were tapping the brush to get the splatter point of light effect, have you ever tried loading the brush with paint, and then just spraying it with air through the airbrush. You can produce the same effect, if not better control, without risking hitting the mini with a loaded brush.
    Spectacular final piece.

    • @ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART
      @ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART  16 днів тому +1

Thanks, I felt the same. If you find a good reason where to use it than it can be justified.
Thanks for the hint. I did the thing with the airbrush and brush for blood splatters long time ago, it is true that this might work too. Not sure if it will be dots or a mess like with the blood effect I created back then :D ... Must try. On the other hand I had no fear risking hitting the mini as it was just a dark Balrog and a quick repair paint with black is easily done ... mmh! Many thanks for making my brain think :)

    Maybe it’s bit too dark.
A little bit more light emanating from Gandalf? In form of small diameter piercing rays, maybe? Could give more depth, too.
The Balrog - „Shadow and Flame“ - looks fine so far, I wouldn’t “lighten him up“ (I COULDN‘T anyway xD your painting skills are way beyond mine)^^

I couldn't even tell what it was at first because everything is so dark. The thumbnail really confused me because it looked like a floating campfire in the middle of a black void and I couldn't figure out what scene it was supposed to be. It took hearing you explain and actually seeing the work in progress before I got it. I know it's an atmospheric piece and probably better seen in person than on a screen, but I completely missed what it was for all the darkness.
