It's really impressive how well the animators get across character traits with sign language, like Oushi's signs being so sharp and harsh. It's a really good use of body language
Reminds me of the JSL from Gangsta! Super underrated. I wish we saw more sign language, but obviously it's a huge undertaking.
In sign language you aren't simply reading/watching the signs, you focus on the signers face. How someone gestures with their face and body is what helps you understand if they are saying:

The major thing I noticed between oushi and itsuomi is oushi is always trying to make her world smaller and itsumomi wants to bring her world into his making it bigger. There are a lot of people like oushi, who, no matter how much they care about someone with disabilities, the disability is what they see first. He may like her, and he made the effort to learn sign, but he sees her meeting challenges in life and wants to put her back in the safe box.
Yeah. He doesn't give her room to grow as a person because his perception of her can't handle that
yep, he cares about her but he doesn’t know how to do it right n constantly plays her disability for the thing that’ll ruin her life (it would ruin her life if she was afraid of everything like oushi wants)
Exactly
My take is that instead of him wanting to keep her down, he's still a little boy inside who doesn't know how to express how he feels to the girl he likes, so he defaults to being mean. Doesn't make the results for him any better, but it's frustratingly understandable - he's still got some growing up to do emotionally.

A Silent Voice honestly paved the way and twinkling watermelon made me cry sm.
both have made a great impact and gave all an opportunity to understand it better. And that in such a heartfelt and beautiful way.
How does the word "empowering" work here? As someone without disabilities, does seeing people with disabilities make you feel powerful? As someone with disabilities, does seeing other people's struggles make you feel more powerful?
@@noxinabox3506are you just trying to pick a fight? it’s obvious they were saying the increased representation makes people more aware of disabilities and helps disabled people feel more seen-nothing negative like what you’re implying

HES ALIVE
To people in comments: there wasn’t ever meant to be only deaf person across all anime. Yuki is a person herself, not to be compared to other characters.
To oushi fans: childhood friend/tsundere or not, a person who doesn’t even understand that his deaf friend can have other friends who care for her /help her /love her because she is worth all that, shouldn’t be in her life.
i think it's actually beneficial because characters having flaws allows the plot to progress and for them to grow and evolve. a story helps showcase that and it's okay to have problems with his behaviour, that's the whole point.
also his concern goes beyond a surface level explanation, he's genuinely concerned that those girls might have ulterior motives and are being disingenuous in their interactions. i think that's normal because anyone would be apprehensive of others trying to interact with a friend of yours who experiences the world differently because of a disability or is opposite to a societal norm. he's just incredibly awkward with his communication, which is not a justification for it but merely an explanation.
@aden9160 That's good and all but doesn't warrant her putting up with his behavior or attitude all the time or (as he clearly wishes) loving him romantically unfortunately. Especially since she already has to struggle to communicate and now she has to read possible intentions to because he's a tsundere. As someone that cares for her, not taking her feelings in consideration and adding burden on her by making conversation and interacting with others more difficult for her is a problem he should reflect on seriously. Parents want their children to be happy and not let them go near bad people but if they confined the kids at home and told them they could only talk with them and that everyone else was bad, especially by implying that people wouldn't normally go near the kid because they have something wrong you would consider it mental abuse no matter the "intentions" the parents could have had, same here. That pertains to a lot of tsunderes portrayed in anime recently
@@huh5950absolutely and while I completely agree with your point, I only intended to make a comment on the plot specifically with characters existing as devices for growth - which I should have clarified and recognize how it contributed to the misunderstanding.
she is in no way obligated to return/reciprocate his feelings, nor is she responsible for his awkwardly unruly and condescending way of interacting with her. but he does exist as a foil and a roadblock to 1st male lead and in her own path to self-advocacy.
EDIT: an additional point, unfortunately a lot of authors/mangaka tend to structure their character plots/interactions based off of pre-existing tropes and is definitely something to consider when approaching the conversation about quality representation.
It's a story, characters with flaws is what makes stories worth enjoying. And you completely cut out nuance and situational understanding, it's obvious when you read between the lines that Oushi cares a great deal for her, and is just overly concerned for her, and one of his flaws is that he can't communicate his feelings properly.
@@aden9160I mean we all put up with things that others would find appalling. No one's perfect but to strive to do better than our past imperfections is something everyone should strive for

Eh, I have to disagree. As a deaf person myself I have something to say about this Oushi actually strikes me as a person who doesn't treat her like a delicate princess for her disability, but rather as he would with any other friends. He treats her like a person. Itsoumi Seems like he's just fascinated by her disability and by how "cute" she is. Just because he learned sign language for her doesn't mean he doesn't see her as an object similar to a fish in a fish tank. But ultimately, I know the show will make you believe Itsoumi is the one for her so already I can forsee my personal issues with this.
Ouishi literally tells her all the time what she should and shouldn't do. If he likes her he should just say so and not wait around and then get jealous when someone else is interested in her. And just because Itsoumi is nice to her and thinks she is cute doesn't mean he doesn't see her as a person. Yes he is fascinated by her but she is also fascinated by him. There is no instance where Itsoumi treats her like an object. He is just very kind and respectful and that has nothing to do with her "being a delicate flower" or him seeing her as one.
He's my favorite but yeah she's not into him and it's weird to think there's people who ship them. Feel bad for him tho lol

Im so excited to see whats to come with this anime! I love how different JSL is compared to ASL!
Any idea how I can get started? The 4 episodes of this animr have inspired me to learn sign langusge and possibly specialise in hearing in Medical school. But I'd probably have to learn sign language online. Any tips?
@@zoraackerman1684I recommend trying to find people to learn from in person. There's a ton of subtext and accents that are best picked up face to face. A lot of colleges and universities have a class, and a lot of clubs or communities are willing to teach anyone interested, just googling "learn ASL [city]" could get you a lead to follow.
If you want to try to learn a language online, more power to ya, but making friends helps so much.
@@zoraackerman1684 Honestly? You can learn ASL online if you want to, but in-person is 100x better. I recommend taking up an asl 1 course online and then proceed from there if you really want it to be online. If you just want to learn the language for free, then you will have flaws in your signing because you'll just be watching youtube videos, since I dont think there are any available free courses for ASL at the moment. Most of those flaws can be rectified if you attend deaf community events where they can correct your signing. So if you just want a free way of learning, you can start with searching for videos of the alphabet, grammar, rules, W-WH-WHE-WHO-H videos. Then learn vocabulary and talk to actual deaf people. Of course, I still think you should take an in-person class or an online course if you really want it to be online, but this is what I recommend to learn ASL online and for free.

For those of y'all that haven't actually watched the anime: no, he's ( his name's Oshi or something idk) not the real love interest, nor does he attempt to "show that he cares for her" without being rude. Another guy (Itsunomi) is with her, and he's 10/10. He's also learning sign language to speak to her. He's a sweetheart. I'm calling it now that he likes her deep down, made all the effort to learn sigh language but was too stupid be around her with her deaf ears.
For real.
It would be okay if he was only a dumb guy, he is rude so it is worse...
Bro learnt a whole new language just so he could insult someone and they could understand it. Gotta respect the grind
0:56 Bro doing the backshots motion
I- this gives me a silent voice vibes (not a bad thing just an observation) i really like that they animated the hand signs sm though tbh
Another new anime to watch weekly ✅
This looks great! Animating sign language looks hard!!! so impressive! I think my grandma would love this anime; I'm gonna recommend it to her so we can watch it together!
A Sign of Affection nah ! Combination of multiple characters from multiple animes.
Miyo Saimori in orange hair
Ice Guy with no ice
Jun from Tomo Chan😂😂
Bro lost his crush to his future rival in episode 1 and didn't even know.
Imagine someone loving so much they fluently learn your language and you're not even in a relationship 😭❤ I cant imagine
Have you never had a friend?
@@arthurfraco2970 ... no 😔

@@weeaboojones4063yeah
@@weeaboojones4063 Depends on the friend.
AWWW!!! More JSL! I loved the JSL In Gangsta! ❤❤
He's her childhood friend, he learned sign language for her. He really likes her but terrible at showing it, yeah he is not the end game. But he's not a bad guy.
He already knew it before and yes he is rude and treats her like she is re*arded
*They look so much like Damian and Anya*
