Yes indeed! In fact, script translators, when translating, have to watch each scene multiple times so they can find a perfect word to match the lip movement. I guess the script translator was not able to find a word in English that has a similar sound as the one said in Japanese, so they just stuck to the original ma-o-u and then decided to translate what that means in English in the line after!

If you're inserting cheesy English phrases or doing other localization changes to match the society or lip movement, you are doing a disservice to the author and ruining their work. It needs to stop.

For me, it’s Oushi. I’ve been reading the manga for a long time too now. Didn’t like Oushi for quite a while. Then it turned into, “yeah, he’s not nice, but I can tell he’s not completely horrible.” Then, after watching the anime-together with my mom (me 30, mom 50-something)-once in Japanese and again in English and re-reading the manga while watching, I’ve come to love Oushi as a character. He’s immature, absolutely. But Oushi also has a genuine caring heart behind a deep insecurity with being vulnerable with people. More and more I can see that Oushi both likes Yuki and cares for deaf people like Yuki. They are mixed together specifically in his like for Yuki in his current state. But with Yuki getting a boyfriend, Oushi is starting to grow :)

5:07 oh wow, this hits differently now. Not from a I’ve watched the whole series angle, but from a I’ve studied sign language one. Sure Oshi is mad for other reasons the little gremlin, but sign language is a way of communication. And for that communication to occur, the deaf community need sight. What Itsuomi just did was remove Oshi’s route for communication with Yuki. Even if Yuki didn’t want to talk with Oshi at that point, it can be a really rude and hurtful thing to do in the deaf community. And considering how passionate Oshi can be about sign even outside of his communication with Yuki, I can imagine him being really insulted about it.
Still I think Oshi is using that as excuse to be possessive of yuki. He’s the toxic ally that knows all the “rules” but doesn’t respect yuki as an individual. That’s why the white hair guy while rude is more genuine.

I haven't seen the full anime but it doesn't seem like she can hear at all even with them in. So are they intended for something else or am I missing something? It is helpful in so many ways as it helps with your situational awareness (eg, a car behind you is honking). It is also helpful as it shows the people around you that you are hard of hearing and may not be able to hear them talk to you, etc. Its important to note that there’s a spectrum when it comes to deafness and what one person can or cant hear may be different from another person. Love how this anime helps ppl learn more about the deaf community!!

It is very difficult for me to even image what is like to be hard of hearing, or unable to hear at all. Side note; I have now finally watched the full anime, and it was amazing. Of course an anime isn't ever gonna be 100% accurate to read life, but I feel like I got a better understanding when watching it. Also I really like and appreciate that in this anime, Yuki isn't meant to "overcome" her deafness. Thanks again for your explanation, I hope to get an even better understanding in the future 👍
As a German no matter the dub the German bits are so funny 😂 always so short and to the point- no one would talk like that. It’s like they also just learned speaking German even though it should be their mother language which is so funny to me in this story context 😂 But probs to the people that had to speak a few German lines Itsuomis were sometime even good 👍 But overall I love this anime a lot, I was just happy to have a nice romance anime after such a long time 🥰

Oushi was destroyed in Season one. Basically all the characters had a great time except Oushi. That dude is in a depression spiral about to become a shut in trying to master sign language. I really hope he has a better time in season 2, because he is struggling 😢
Interesting to me is how my like or dislike of Oushi has changed over the years of reading, re-reading, and now watching and re-watching what’s available in this series. Keep in mind that the English publication of the “A Sign of Affection” manga was not far ahead of where the anime leaves off at the time the anime was airing. I didn’t like Oushi because he came across as a jerk, kind of like our experience first meeting Bakugo in “My Hero Academia.” Then with the anime starting to air soon, I started to think about Oushi more. As I keep thinking and reading and watching Oushi, the more I see him as a flawed human with sincere emotions and intentions. His main flaw is lacking both the maturity and the risk-taking-trust of being vulnerable with others. A reason I see Oushi liking sign language so much was because it actually has helped him open up to express himself in a small way. He’s still immature at this time, yes. And if Oushi was more mature and able to be vulnerable with others, he would have had a closer relationship with Yuki, and I could even see Oushi and Yuki in a relationship if they put in work to make it work. But that is not where Oushi is right now. And his experience of Yuki using their “secret code” with another guy and going out with that guy is now pushing Oushi to start maturing in properly opening up himself to others. Now, I love Oushi’s character. Even though he’s not mature right now. I see amazing potential for him as a character in this story.

If I didn’t watch the show, I would’ve thought Oushi was an ex who physically abused her or constantly cheated on her, from the way people were hating on him. He’s a Bakugo at the beginning of “My Hero Academia,” where we only know him as a negative character. But with time and the direction of both the story and Oushi’s character, we may come to like him as much as we do Yuki and Itsuomi. A story never thrives on hate of its characters after all. Even the foils and villains are liked for one reason or another in some of the best selling works.
A lot like Itsuomi, I speak English and German (unfortuntly no Japanese yet, but I'm starting). I literally DIE inside everytime Itsuomi says that line in German in the Laundromat. It translates to: "You are cute" and his voice is just so uhhhh that he manages to hit my weak spots EVERY SINGLE TIME I rewatch that scene 😭

5:07 oh wow, this hits differently now. Not from a I’ve watched the whole series angle, but from a I’ve studied sign language one. Sure Oshi is mad for other reasons the little gremlin, but sign language is a way of communication. And for that communication to occur, the deaf community need sight. What Itsuomi just did was remove Oshi’s route for communication with Yuki. Even if Yuki didn’t want to talk with Oshi at that point, it can be a really rude and hurtful thing to do in the deaf community. And considering how passionate Oshi can be about sign even outside of his communication with Yuki, I can imagine him being really insulted about it.
Still I think Oshi is using that as excuse to be possessive of yuki. He’s the toxic ally that knows all the “rules” but doesn’t respect yuki as an individual. That’s why the white hair guy while rude is more genuine.

Do you think you could help me understand something? In the anime she's wearing ear pieces... Aren't those meant up help her hear? I haven't seen the full anime but it doesn't seem like she can hear at all even with them in. So are they intended for something else or am I missing something? I'm genuinely confused (and entirely uneducated😅)
@@TaiyaTodorokihearing aids can help amplify the sounds around you if you are hard of hearing. But unfortunately it does not “fix” deafness. It is helpful in so many ways as it helps with your situational awareness (eg, a car behind you is honking). It is also helpful as it shows the people around you that you are hard of hearing and may not be able to hear them talk to you, etc. Its important to note that there’s a spectrum when it comes to deafness and what one person can or cant hear may be different from another person. Love how this anime helps ppl learn more about the deaf community!!
@@sarahngghae thank you for your explanation, I do appreciate it. As someone who has little too good hearing and often get headaches because literally everything is way too loud... It is very difficult for me to even image what is like to be hard of hearing, or unable to hear at all.
Side note; I have now finally watched the full anime, and it was amazing. Of course an anime isn't ever gonna be 100% accurate to read life, but I feel like I got a better understanding when watching it. Also I really like and appreciate that in this anime, Yuki isn't meant to "overcome" her deafness.

As a German no matter the dub the German bits are so funny 😂 always so short and to the point- no one would talk like that. It’s like they also just learned speaking German even though it should be their mother language which is so funny to me in this story context 😂

Oushi was destroyed in Season one. Basically all the characters had a great time except Oushi. That dude is in a depression spiral about to become a shut in trying to master sign language. I really hope he has a better time in season 2, because he is struggling 😢
Interesting to me is how my like or dislike of Oushi has changed over the years of reading, re-reading, and now watching and re-watching what’s available in this series. Keep in mind that the English publication of the “A Sign of Affection” manga was not far ahead of where the anime leaves off at the time the anime was airing.
I didn’t like Oushi because he came across as a jerk, kind of like our experience first meeting Bakugo in “My Hero Academia.”
Then with the anime starting to air soon, I started to think about Oushi more.
As I keep thinking and reading and watching Oushi, the more I see him as a flawed human with sincere emotions and intentions. His main flaw is lacking both the maturity and the risk-taking-trust of being vulnerable with others. A reason I see Oushi liking sign language so much was because it actually has helped him open up to express himself in a small way. He’s still immature at this time, yes. And if Oushi was more mature and able to be vulnerable with others, he would have had a closer relationship with Yuki, and I could even see Oushi and Yuki in a relationship if they put in work to make it work. But that is not where Oushi is right now. And his experience of Yuki using their “secret code” with another guy and going out with that guy is now pushing Oushi to start maturing in properly opening up himself to others.
Now, I love Oushi’s character. Even though he’s not mature right now. I see amazing potential for him as a character in this story.

If I didn’t watch the show, I would’ve thought Oushi was an ex who physically abused her or constantly cheated on her, from the way people were hating on him. In the end he was just an immature and misunderstood character. And this is also coming from someone who doesn’t like Oushi’s character archetype
@@muhdzulhilmi3115 I totally understand, and agree that Oushi has been over-hated in comments online discussing the anime release. He’s a Bakugo at the beginning of “My Hero Academia,” where we only know him as a negative character. But with time and the direction of both the story and Oushi’s character, we may come to like him as much as we do Yuki and Itsuomi. A story never thrives on hate of its characters after all. Even the foils and villains are liked for one reason or another in some of the best selling works.

A lot like Itsuomi, I speak English and German (unfortuntly no Japanese yet, but I'm starting). I literally DIE inside everytime Itsuomi says that line in German in the Laundromat. It translates to: "You are cute" and his voice is just so uhhhh that he manages to hit my weak spots EVERY SINGLE TIME I rewatch that scene 😭
