I cried when I saw this as a child. Apollo(and Mike Tyson) was my favorite fighter rolling up. I didn't even watch Rocky 5 because I knew Apollo couldn't be in it. Carl weathers is an amazing actor and has had a lot of other roles that were noteworthy. But he played this part so well and helped make this franchise what it was just as much as Sylvester Stallone. The way they brought in Apollo's son and made the new movie about Creed was a stroke of genius.
I didn't want Apollo to die. He was my favourite character in all of the Rocky films - including Rocky himself. It still amazes me that playing such an iconic character did not propel Carl Weathers into superstardom alongside the likes of Stallone and Schwarzenegger.
@@CSavageSr I have seen Action Jackson, and thought it was a decent film. It is a good slice of 80's cheese and fairly entertaining, but, let's face it, although in my opinion, it is better than most of the dross involving Steven Seagal or Jean Claude Van Damme, it is definitely no classic. Having said that I do think it is under rated and was unfairly panned by the critics. Jackson was supposed to be the launch of a franchise, but because it performed badly at the box office, the idea was dropped.
Man, that "No matter what" after Apollo gets that mouth guard still gets me. Carl Weathers delivers that line with so much gravity. And, you know it would be difficult to deliver ANY speech with that thing in your mouth, but Weathers delivers. Then, turning to [Apollo]'s wife with that look, and she trying to hold back tears yet still trusting in her husband's strength and assurance that he still had things under control...just amazing. Both men did a great job playing their respective parts. Carl Weathers absolutely SELLS the punishment taken by "the big Russian", and Dolph Lundgren does a great job demonstrating how scary this character is supposed to be. Like others have stated, this was THE "water cooler" subject for us boys back in grade school. As a grown man pushing quickly toward 50, I still love this movie, and still get punched in the "feels" when watching this scene.
Well said. The way Stallone filmed this it's as though we are Apollo's wife watching our "husband" go to his death. Another genius move was to have Drago have no line until this fight. For the first time he speaks, saying to Apollo, "You will lose," you know that something very bad is about to happen.

The reason Apollo didn’t survive because he let his ego and he was overconfident and unprepared for what Drago was going to do to him! That’s why he died before the end of the 2nd round! Rocky only survived because of his angry and guilt he felt for not stopping the fight sooner!
@@WrapperPresidentsShow He didn't survive because the 1985 screen writers turned thus into a white supremacist fantasy about Muhammad Ali. Some big tough white guy to shut him and his flamboyance up 😂😂😂
Even though Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) 's death was really heartbreaking in Rocky 4 (1985), his death would actually play an significant role in Creed (2015).
1:07 this scene always breaks my heart. His movement and speed were his bread and butter, but now he is out of his prime and fighting the deadliest opponent of his career.
You have no idea of the cold war politics of this time. When Ivan said if he dies, he dies, it sent shock waves because, at the time, Russia was an unstoppable force. I'm 44 and still got goosebumps when Apollo died. There were only two superpowers at this time, and they were on the screen.
Yes moslty in a ground war the soviot union would win most likely against amercia and I was just thinking so much how irl this would be scary for amercians cuz it would show red Dominance over Amercia
0:05 Apollo puts Drago's gloves up. But he realized the strength in his arms. That he couldn't bring them down. You can see it in his face. He realized his first deadly clue at what he was up against.
It was racist as all out yonder is what it was! Drago kjIIs Creed--while on PEDs! The black guy gets kjIIed in 2, but Rocky endures 13 more rounds of the same beating and wins! Not to mention, his slick use of the mostly group of black fighters in boxing history in a way that did not allow them to sue(Foreman, AIi, Marciano/Frazier, Lennox Lewis, and Sonny Liston/Tyson*) and--at the same--get very rich! Though they could not sue, it was clear what his intention was! *Gunn was Liston and Tyson. Rocky Balboa used a Cus D'Amato style that was used by Patterson and Tyson.
@@elitegoblin2248 It's amazing how some people never see racism, taking their cue from Trump. And, Trump may have been right in a lot of areas(that's being proven now in Byeden), but he wasn't right on his racism and divisiveness! Like Trump, this is racist. Like you and Trump, you ignore it! To act like it cannot subtly happen in movies is preposterous!
Apollo was completely dedicated to the art of the fight; if he was to be defeated; he would rather die than surrender; similar to Samurai principles. Rocky respected him, understood him & honored that by not throwing in the towel. It was obviously, heartbreaking for Rocky and Apollo’s family to let him go; as Apollo wanted to go. Rocky was the man he trusted the most; as he understood his free-will choice to live or die. It’s the movies, but it’s also real; if Apollo had not chosen the way that he did; Rocky would not have ultimately defeated Drago. The fights are symbolic representation of Natural Man vs. Transhumanism, Eugenicists, Military madness. Rocky IV is one I revisit from childhood & the feelings I had about it as a child make a lot of “real-world” sense as an “adult”
Apollo was my favorite character in the entire franchise. Cocky, entertaining, and died being everything he ever claimed he was. He went out on his shield and REFUSED to be a coward.
Carl Weathers in the best shape of his life. Even though this scene and the movie was a show of how arrogant he had become, nothing can take away from the fact that he too was built like a rock in real life. This whole series is a reminder that arrogance and overconfidence can get you only so far in life. In this very movie later, Drago bears the brunt of his arrogance when Balboa knocks the living daylights out of him in the final bout. What makes this whole Rocky series likeable is that Rocky Balboa is not your perfect human being. He is as insecure and as flawed as all of us. But if there is one thing that he exhibits, it is his will power and motivation to overcome the odds and rise above the clouds (mostly drawn over his thoughts by himself most of the time) shrouding him and the daring to reach for the sun rays that shine above and beyond.
I do kind of wonder how the fight would have gone if Apollo had been at the peak of his prime, took Drago seriously from the get-go, and had studied his opponent before the fight.
@@270yis7 That was a big part of the storyline here, that Apollo was 5 years into retirement and had no business just stepping into the ring cold against a monster like Drago. Remember how much Muhammad Ali struggled after just a 3 year absence, he was never the same again and had to totally change his style. And Ali was still closer to his prime that Apollo would have been here. This is an old Apollo, spectacular shape for his age but well past his prime. Think of Roy Jones Jr in his late 30's. Spectacular athlete for his age but no where near the electrifying fighter he was in his 20's. Adrian and Rocky tried to warn Apollo, they knew he was too far past his prime but that champions pride he had blinded him. Like Apollo said without a war the warrior might as well be dead.
This was very traumatic to me as a kid. I grew up with Rocky and Apolo and they were like family. Losing Apolo was like losing a family member. This was a huge deal and everyone wanted vengence from Rocky and he gave it. Glorious movie.
I remember watching this in the cinema, the que to get in went around the block, there was people sitting on the cinema floors and stairs as there was no seats free. Amazing movies, Amazing era to be alive!
RIP Carl Weathers. Genuinely masterful performance. You were always someone we could look up to and you never went down without a fight. I admire that.
There’s nothing anyone could have done to stop Drago from doing what he did. He was ignoring all the rules because he wasn’t playing by the rules from the start. I think both Rock & Apollo realized this but they realized it too late in the fight (after Drago actually started landing punches) You get a guy who is almost 7’, throwing nearly 2,000lb punches to your face every 2 seconds and he’s ignoring all the rules? What can you physically or logically do? Unfortunately, Apollo’s death was his own fault because he was so stubborn and determined to fight Drago that no one could have stopped him. In fact, both Rocky and Adrian tried to talk sense into him earlier in the movie and it wasn’t good enough for him. He had to prove to himself that he still had it. There’s really nothing anyone could have done in the match to prevent Apollo from being killed. It’s extremely sad and heartbreaking but it’s the truth.
The Russians even warned apollo he was getting old, drago was young and in his prime. It speaks volumes to apollo's character though, he was cocky and arrogant, yet he was still a warrior. He wanted to go out on his shield, loved apollo as a character, rocky reminds me of goku from dbz being the underdog, apollo reminds me of vegeta being greatly skilled and naturally talented but also arrogant lol. This scene was horrifying though too...
3:10 The REAL moment is when thinks for a second, then turns to find his wife. That gets overlooked, the bond a man and woman have when they truly love each other in marriage. Not his trainer, not Rocky, not even his mother if she had been there. He looked for his wife. He knew then, and so did she. You all say Apollo wanted to win or die, well I think he wanted to live, but his need to be Apollo in that ring was stronger. Still, he took a moment to make eye contact and how it was "If I don't make it, I love you" and his wife knew it, too. When some of you are a little older and you're a husband, you'll understand. You might feel it some as your girl's boyfriend, true, but that's nothing when you've been married 10, 15 years and facing life, and death, together.
That was well said my friend. The only thing for me, the moment I would have saw her tear up, I would have knew at that moment, she will die in the ring with me if I die, I could not let het live with that. I would have stopped.
I know Carl Weathers hated the fact that Stallone killed off his character, but in a way it really does Apollo's character justice. Apollo is a warrior through and through. Plus I love the fact that the movie kept mentioning that he was old so there's still that theory that Rocky 2 Apollo would've gave Ivan a run for his money.
Rocky one Apollo maybe. Rocky says in the creed movies that the only reason he was able to beat Apollo is because he was out of his prime and father time took his toll.
Man, I was just watching this scene almost everyday and out of the blue Carl Weathers die, my condolences to his family and friends, GOD rest his soul!!🙏🏾🙌🏾😔😞
Apollo was being brave for his wife giving her that half grin and glove raise but the sad thing is, it ended up being a goodbye. Seeing this for the first time was traumatizing as a little kid LOL. I felt all the emotions. Apollo had just helped Rocky win back the HW title in part 3. Creed turned out to be my favorite character in the series.
Still, after all these years, one of the most hard-hitting deaths I've seen in a film. The delivery of the "throw the damn towel" line does crack me up, though.
Exactly. The referee stepped in to try and stop the fight, but Drago shoved him away. What makes anyone think he would have respected the towel being thrown into the ring?
If this happened in real life, Drago would’ve been disqualified after continuing to land blows after the round ends and most likely would have to appear on court the very next day.

To me, Ivan was never the villain. Just the antagonist. Throughout the movie you'll notice that he doesn't take much pleasure or relish in what he's doing, he's just doing what he's told to. But unlike every other character in the series, he never seems to make it personal. I always found that interesting about him

'Real'? Wtf? Which Rocky have you been watching. This scene is brutal, but the fights were anything but real.
They were in no way real. The only fight that comes even close to being realistic is the final fight between Lang and Rocky, but even that is not exactly realistic.
Incorrect to both of you. Stallone said they really punched each other during the "fake fight scenes" one of them putting Stallone in the ICU for 4 days. Of course they aren't punching as hard as they could but they still connected.
Have you never seen a real boxing fight . They’re pure shit . Entertaining but not remotely realistic .

Right move not watching Rocky 5.

FR man this scene is underrated in cinematic history!
Rookie numbers.
You should be watching it at least 3 times a day.
That should get your numbers up to a respectable level.
I didn't want Apollo to die. He was my favourite character in all of the Rocky films - including Rocky himself.
It still amazes me that playing such an iconic character did not propel Carl Weathers into superstardom alongside the likes of Stallone and Schwarzenegger.
Action Jackson!!!
He did alright. There was predator. But yeah he deserved more.
Because black
He did have a notable role alongside Schwarzenegger in Predator.
Yeah really the wife tearing up knowing what horrible danger her husband is in gets me the most.
It just seemed like Apollo wanted to go down fighting, even if it meant leaving his family and loved ones devestated

Drago was on steroids as shown in the film. He wasn’t that strong naturally

RIP Carl Weathers. Genuinely masterful performance. You were always someone we could look up to and you never went down without a fight. I admire that.
"You will lose"
One of the very few words he says in this film
It's often said that history tends to repeat itself. After watching last night's Paul vs. Tyson match, no words have ever been truer.
There’s nothing anyone could have done to stop Drago from doing what he did. He was ignoring all the rules because he wasn’t playing by the rules from the start. I think both Rock & Apollo realized this but they realized it too late in the fight (after Drago actually started landing punches)
You get a guy who is almost 7’, throwing nearly 2,000lb punches to your face every 2 seconds and he’s ignoring all the rules? What can you physically or logically do? Unfortunately, Apollo’s death was his own fault because he was so stubborn and determined to fight Drago that no one could have stopped him.
In fact, both Rocky and Adrian tried to talk sense into him earlier in the movie and it wasn’t good enough for him. He had to prove to himself that he still had it. There’s really nothing anyone could have done in the match to prevent Apollo from being killed.
It’s extremely sad and heartbreaking but it’s the truth.
Ivan was doing what he was told.
His trainers would have ignored the towel.

Oh Carl Weathers! Such personality and showmanship as Apollo, but great humanity too. You helped to make the Rocky movies what they were. RIP.
This scene is now even more heartbreaking now that we’ve lost him for real. R.I.P Carl Weathers.
Wouldn't Drago have been disqualified for continuing to punch Apollo multiple times after the end of the round?
Definitely should have been but being this is a movie of course he wasn't.
Well then again the ref just let him get destroyed in the corner without calling it
In the second-round, the fact that Drago pushed the referee also would have resulted in a disqualification.
There's real life, and then there's Hollywood.
I think we can safely the referee made a number of bad calls during this fight
