You people have no idea how amazing this movie was to a 10 year old in '88.

No I don't but I do know as a 11 year old. 😉😉

Unlike the big budget Disney action movies nowadays like Marvels, Bloodsport will forever live on as a cult classic. A true hero's journey.
Only that Disney is more realistic :-P Dux was the ultimate bullshitter
@@joebloggs5318Ok now the whole Dux Is a fraud thing Is understandable
But Saying Disney is more realistic Is like Saying She Hulk Is better than Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 or The Flash is better than The Dark Knight
It's MAD cap

The other line was more powerfull "your not a Japanese your not a tanaka!" Loved the whole dialoque

What I like most about this movie is the message. Even in bad times and loss you don't have to give up yourself, it's about to find reasons to live and go further and beyond.

Looking back, Tanaka needed this to help get him through the death of his son. Frank took on this burden to learn at the masters feet to give his mentor hope that the teaching will go on in spite of the loss of his son. And what better candidate to do that than someone who was already like family? In essence, Tanaka could see how deeply Frank cared about the art and his family. How much of a difference they had made in his own life. The philosophy that he taught him in youth was applied and the logic was sound. It was Frank's way of conveying gratitude for allowing him to be a part of his family. To raise him up from tragedy as Tanaka had done for him from delinquency. Brilliant writing and performance.
Kicboxer
Very well said!
One of my favourite martial arts movies!
However, in reality, Frank Dux, as portrayed here by Van Damme never did meet Tanaka, and he was never was in any Kumate. He never received any sword awarded to him and he traded in the sword to sea traveling pirates in exchange for the lives of young boys who were going to become slaves. Believe me, Bloodsport is a kickass movie. But this movie is completely bogus telling us about Frank Dux and the Kumate as well as being trained Senzo Tanaka, not even meeting him for even ten seconds.
Very accurate assessment.
@@stanleybroniszewsky8538this movie still is fn awesome and always will be just like the original Predator, Blade runner, I mean the list could go on. Great movies that aren't real

That soundtrack, tho! Its a masterpiece. From the scene where Tanaka tears up to this training montage. Its amazing.
One of the greatest montages ever created. 10/10 music, plot and screen play. This should be a go to for everyone.
The real Frank Dux lies created a Hollywood masterpiece.
I absolutely love that moment at 3:53 where Senzo gives his wife that knowing look and smile. In all his training scenes with Frank he stays stoic and stern faced, but the candidness he shows with his wife while Frank is blindfolded does a perfect job of illustrating how proud he is in that moment. Then in the final scene of this training montage, when he presents Frank with the katana, you can see the tiniest little hint of a smile across Senzo's face. Roy Chiao's performance as Tanaka was incredible.
R.I.P Roy Chiao.
Absolutely Correkt
@DrooMighty imagine if Frank would've spilled the tea on tanaka wife.ha
There is a sublime meaning that in front of his student who’s blindfolded he only wants to demonstrate his pleasure to his wife. Only in his wife will he demonstrate this act. A true measure of a man. He will not show pleasure to his student because he wants the student to understand success is long term. It’s continuing in its process and development. Miyagi did the same a small nod or smile, it demonstrates to his student it’s not enough everything is in stages. My Father was like that extreme discipline, courage and strength.
100 percent agreed
The sword ceremony still gives me chills. The music, the story, Jean-Claude and Roy’s performances, so much greatness.
It's SUPER sad that the "real" Frank Dux was a complete and utter phony, but it doesn't change the fact that JVCD, Roy C., Lettich (Director), and the entire cast and crew were outstanding. The music was wonderful, the editing helped showcase JCVD while not taxing Roy, and there was obvious care put into the screenplay.
My favorite JCVD film is still "Lionheart", though. :) All about making a little girl and her mother happy and healed. I *LOVED* THAT. And the entire cast and crew was---once again--brilliant. I only wish JCVD did more films like this, and just a few less like Universal Soldier.
The final scene with the sword is so powerful. To me, it represents the final transmission between teacher and student, lineage, and across cultures. It may be fictional but it represents a moment that is true in many traditions and they have often died without this.
There is a special place in my heart for this movie

This scene always gets me misty eyed because it takes me back to training in Shotokan when I was a kid and how proud my pops was when he'd watch me do my kata routines. I love seeing Tanaka start to look at Frank like a son and how he beams with pride as he snaps the rope from the tree stump. The music is perfection.
Many people, including myself, missed the most important part. He impressed his wife during the scene where he was blindfolded. This shows that she, too, gave her blessings and how important it was to him to as his wife.
Thank you! When shidoshi gives her his "nod" of approval like see what I've created. Even though Frank doesn't get the "atta boy" of recognition, we the audience see the that shidoshi is pleased that Frank has made such progression. Ok USA👍🏼👍🏼!!!!

The fact that he has a slight smile on his face, shows how proud Tanaka was of Frank. Loss after loss, and the realization that his training will never be imparted to his future generations, made him despondent. And then Frank decides to honor him and trains extensively and passes all the tests, surprised him to such a degree, that he couldn't help but be impressed and proud.
Such an impactful movie!
This whole training scene and the music behind it, is just pure magic and nothing else!
Yes, the story behind this movie may be true or false. But this is also very true that this is definitely one of those movies that inspired so many people to join some kind of martial arts training. Many of those people are highly successful MMA fighters today.

Bloodsport is a great movie, but based upon nothing but lies regarding Frank Dux, him meeting Senzo Tanaka and training with him, and the so-called Kumate. Frank claims the Kumate he fought in was in an Asian country when in fact such a type of tournament was actually in the Bahamas that year. Frank Dux is a stain on the world of martial arts.

I can see where you are coming from. I can tell you're a true martial artist because a true one never puts down any form of self defense. He also understands the link between martial arts and how it actually corresponds to the yin and yang - having peace and balance. I myself love and practice Tai Chi Quan, study the Tao Te Ching, and respect all forms of martial arts. There is no one single form that is meant for everyone. The only martial art that is vague in balance and harmony that I have a hard time seeing a merge would be the art of Sumo wrestling. But if the men choose to follow it, who am I to argue.
Truly beautiful culture in many ways.
