When your lifting loads over 5 meters onto racking that's as week as piss and pull a whole warehouse down on top of yourself who's fault will that be? A prestart is to cover your ass! Make sure someone else hasn't fucked it in their shift and left you to cop the blame if something goes wrong while your operating it! What if some cunts bent the load guard and now it's rubbing on the mast? What if someone else has crashed into a load and something protruding has punctured say the side shift hose and you get injected with hydraulic fluid under pressure! Who's faults that? The person that damaged it and chose not to report it? Or you because you refused to do a prestart and inspect it? You will be the 1 hurt and suffering and incapacitated COWBOY!
How often does this check need to be done? I see many people jump on a forklift and start using it immediately. Is this for start of day or first time you use the forklift that day? Or is it just another Government WHS overkill that most people ignore?
This is usually done at the start of the day to check everything is in working order and any faults reported to your supervisor etc usually with a form to fill in to confirm the check has been done. Once it has been checked then it can be used by anyone, as it is a legal requirement to ensure the forklift truck is in safe condition to be used. If you are the first to use a forklift truck and you do not check it thoroughly, you will be in shit creek without a paddle if something goes wrong due to an existing fault that was not reported.

Forklift drivers don't get any credit. Forklift drivers drive the manufacturing industry. Sometimes it is dangerous work usually due to the surrounding conditions. I am proud to be a forklift driver and i take my job seriously.
