GORGEOUS cherry desk restoration - Furniture Refinishing & Flipping

  • Sometimes furniture doesn't need FULL refinishing, but DOES require spot repairs and touch ups to help it look its best and hold up over time. This desk is one of those pieces. The top was in decent condition (only because of the glass top protecting the wood all these years) but the trim at the base had failing, flaking finish and there were some excessive wear spots elsewhere... AND the hardware was pretty badly tarnished.
This video shows how I bring this beauty back to life to the best of my current abilities.

Out of all the furniture refinishing channels out there, I like yours the best. You look at each piece individually. Instead of doing a quick paint job and flipping it, you appreciate each piece for what it is and what it still has to offer. All the best to you.

Same here! The vids move along quickly, I learn something along the way, and I'm always impressed with the final product - particularly because there is considerable thought put into what would be best for the piece. You're becoming quite the restoration artist, Angie, and I'm very impressed!

A beautiful restoration. Thank you. I'm beginning to realize that I think of the work you and others do as furniture rescue, like animal rescue. I watch mainly animal and furniture rescue videos, so it's appropriate you have the rescue bunnies. The animals and the furniture are given new lives, their beauty is allowed to shine thru, no matter the state they've gotten to and they go out in the world to their new homes. 🐇🐇🐇

I did not care for the desk when you first showed it as this weeks piece……and I didn’t have any hopes that it would be an exciting finished piece. But boy was I wrong! It is absolutely gorgeous! Totally worth watching how you matched up colors and spruced up the hardware. Love the work you do. You’re my favorite furniture rescuer! 👍

Tom Johnson is the unmatched king of furniture restoration on UA-cam. He was kinda my gateway into the FlipTube subculture, since my interest is woodworking. It’s taken me down the furniture flipping video rabbithole, heh. After renovating this 1924 Victrola, I’m gonna try my first furniture flip / furniture art piece.

You made a good decision with your selection again. A solid wood desk of the same quality as you bought it cannot be bought for less than 2000,00 Euros in Germany, Belgium or Italy. Your feeling for the right choice of color is, as always, enviable. I too have been a follower of Thomas Johnson for years. He carefully restores antiques and uses bone glue which I do as well. I wish you and your loved ones a happy Easter.

I've wanted to refresh them, but I haven't had the skills, tools to do so. You are right about your color "eye". You nailed the color for the one drawer and the base trim. They match the rest of the desk so well. I love that you are so thorough and meticulous. The way you clean inside and out and backside please my detail nature. I have been watching so many other restorers and refinishers (thanks YT for the suggestions), and, you and two others take the time to clean every surface, and sand (when needed) every surface, and wax every surface (inside of drawers). The buyers of your pieces are really getting their money's worth.

That’s our little Millie. She’s the sweetest thing! She is from the rescue, she was caught outside after being abandoned by her owner for half a year. She is an absolute little sweetheart.

I always look forward to Sunday afternoon to see the new projects you're working on.
For the previous person who commented I hate it when people just paint the whole thing when you can see that there's beautiful veneer there.
Your combos of paint and refinishing beautiful veneer is the best way as far as I'm concerned especially if a part is damaged in certain areas.
Paint once damaged show the beauty of the wood on the rest of the piece! 👍

I'm so glad you did this type restoration. I have several pieces that need sprucing up. Great job! Always a treat to watch your videos.

A spectacular transformation, even if it was "just" a partial refinishing.
Yes, Flexner's book on wood finishing is great. I read it recently, and then went right back to page 1 and read it again. I'm sure you already know a lot of what's in it (unlike me), but even so it's indispensable.
I'll try to catch your next live premier when it's live so I can donate some money to the bunnies. 🐇❤️

Hi Angie. Thanks so much for this video. My father made me a cherry/ cedar chest 40 years ago. It’s beautiful, but it needs refreshing.
I know I am late to the party. Just found your channel a month ago. I love your channel. Your work is amazing. You are a joy to listen to and watch. 😘🇨🇦

This looks nearly identical to a piece we have in our dining room, so thank you so much for this video on how to spot refinish!

This is so helpful. I have a piece that like yours doesn't need a complete refinish but certainly shows a bit of wear. I have been puzzeling on it. Now I have a clue on what direction to take. Well done Grasshopper!

Lovely! Always nice to see a piece be restored. I think I learn the impotence of patience from watching your work.

You completely nailed the color-matching! I love Mohawk toners and use them a lot to build up complex color profiles.

Quick tip! Put Cellophane/Saran wrap on the top of the pain container before putting the lid on. Doesn’t stick :) outstanding results. You are a furniture master 🙇‍♀️
