you can take the head off and, like I did in the video, stuff something inside of it. it doesn't have to be very full. just a little something soft touching one or both of the heads should do it. a small pillow (not a full size one from a bed) or a towel, or even a t shirt or something should work. you could also heat up something round and metal (like a coffee can) and then melt a nice hole in your drum. but thats optional and you would still need to stick something in there anyway.
Hey Ryan, hoping you can help a noob out. I'm looking at page 13 of thrash metal drumming and trying to figure out how to tune my drums. My snare is tight on both sides and sounds OK to me. It's my toms that are killing me. If I sent you a link to a video do you think maybe you could take a look and see if you can give me some tips? Should my reso heads be tighter than the batters? I have clear heads as reso and my batters are evans uv2. I keep getting keep working on it, you'll get it from other drummers. I love the books and your channel man. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and spreading your wisdom. It's much appreciated.
I try to tune my rack toms to the same pitch on both sides. But some people go tighter on the bottom. Some people go tighter on the top. You’ll find every possible answer to be correct for someone. I tune my floor tom tighter on the bottom, but I use a 14” floor… so that might not work with a 16 or 18. Hard to say. Tuning drums is an art form that can’t easily be written into a single page of a book. Most videos on it actually fast forward through the part where the actual tuning happens. Its a strange thing. You can send me a video and maybe I’ll have an answer…. Worth a shot.
Hey just thought id say... A couple cats who are in philly and new york told me how they dont keep the bass drum off the floor anymore, just almost right above it...something about wearing out quicker. Not sure if they meant the head or the wood...maybe its more pressure if you have toms mounted, the weight alone will be dampening the tone. I've noticed this myself...anyway good video! The sizes and recording stuff is interesting
Okay. So, my kick drum doesn't have a hole in it. When I use my kick it sounds deep but it has some reverb to it. How can I shorten the sound of my kick to sound less like a Tom? Sorry if this sounds unclear.
interesting. i dont mount toms on my bass drum and i haven't seen any signs of it wearing out after having it for 4+ years and playing seriously heavy double pedal on it... I think those guys are just being cautious.
it's like the blair witch of drum setups. *feels sick*
