Charvel Pro Mod SoCal Style 2 - Can It TWANG like a TELE...?!

  • I quite often get asked whether my Charvel Pro Mod SoCal Style 2 can still provide the classic 'Tele twang', so this week I decided to put it to the test over a nice'n'cheesy country-style backing track! Jam over the backing yourself for free at andywattguitar.com/2021/04/28...
SUBSCRIBE for a new jam each week, and more!
For this video the guitar is in single coil mode and my Tremol-no is engaged which essentially turns it into a hardtail guitar (thus allowing me to do double stop bends without the fretted notes going out of tune). Recorded direct, with FX/amp/cab tones from the Neural DSP Archetype: Cory Wong plug-in.

Many thanks to Dan Rogers (www.danrogers.co.uk) for putting some bass guitar on the backing track this week, with the strict instruction to make it "as cheesy as possible"!

Excellent playing - doesn’t sound like a tele, but can definitely “twang” on its own

Landed on this video because I was checking this guitar out. That is some sweet, sweet playing, mate.

Well done! Great playing and the tremolo no seems to do the job pretty well! Thanks for sharing.

Have any of you guys gotten the high E hung up on the top plate of the Fluence neck pickup? It's happened to me thrice on gigs. I'm set up with 9.5's and I'm not a hard right hand picker. I love this guitar but I need a fix for that.

I have this Charvel and also a standard Fender Tele with Texas Special pickups. The Charvel in single coil mode has a LOT more treble. With same settings it actually sounds shrill compared to the tele. I'd say my Charvel twangs more than my Tele. Maybe it's because Texas Specials are hotter and beefier than regular tele pickups, I don't know.

That’s really interesting, thanks. I’ll have to try a direct comparison with a “real” Tele sometime!

Este video me hizo reflexionar mucho sobre la inversión que haría en mi próxima guitarra, lo que no reflexioné es que en México no habían y la mandé a pedir BUT me la entregan a finales del próximo año 🥲

Nice video. I dont think it could be mistaken for a tele, but it wouldn't be a bad sound as a dueling/solo trading rig with a tele - it actually sounds a little more fiddle-like since it is so smooth. I have a Charvel DK24 and was thinking about the fishman Koch tele pickups for it.

Great cheesy playing! Not ice-picky enough to pass for a really tele bridge, but more pleasant to my ear! LoL

Cheers 🤠! Yes, it's a bit more mellow than a standard Tele isn't it? A hint of twang, but not a full-on treble fest....

@@AndyWattGuitar It is, and certainly less noisy as well. Does active electronic, battery, etc. make for a heavier guitar? How much does your weight?

    • @AndyWattGuitar
      @AndyWattGuitar  3 роки тому

@@callmejs not at all, the extra electronics are very discrete - mine weighs about 3.6kg (8lb) 👍

    A few questions:
Could EQ or pedal magic get this guitar closer to the true Tele bridge pickup sound or is it about the feel and response of this pickup system? I need a hard-tail Tele first, but love the design, features, quality, versatility, and silence of this guitar. That said, if they had a traditional single coil model, I would immediately purchase it and be done.
Do the active electronics feel familiar compared to passive, or is it more flat or compressed response-wise? Do they clean up when rolling the volume back like passives do?
The Tremol-no: Is it as solid as a hard-tail? I'm looking at a traditional Tele style guitar for traditional double-stops and bending. The reason I ask is the clear ash finish isn't available in the hard-tail lineup (Black, White, and Robin's Egg Blue). If it was absolute rock solid for my primary needs, it might be nice to have the option to unblock the trem on occasion for certain situations, or a change.
Thanks for your time, skill, and thoughtful responses.

Yes, I suspect my natural instincts when 'dialling in' the tone are to go easy on the treble - it certainly could have been pushed a bit further! Also it's through an amp plug-in, not really the traditional country player's rig of choice....
The Fishman pickups feel pretty much identical to passive pickups to me - the output isn't really any higher (though it varies depending on voice 1, 2 or 3), and there's no compression. They clean up when you roll the volume back as normal. The main difference is just the 3 distinct voices, the fact that the signal doesn't degrade over long cable runs, and it doesn't lose treble when you roll back the volume.
I did a demo of the tremol-no earlier this year on my channel - worth a watch if you haven't seen it already. It's an impressive bit of kit - you have to get the screws REALLY tight but I do find it very solid when in hardtail mode, and can happily detune or do double stop bends. It rattles a little when it's engaged - possibly due to my amateur tech skills when fitting it. I can't hear it when it's plugged in though, so not a huge problem.

Hey love your videos! Would you be able to do a demonstration/ jam video of the Charvel SoCal only with the single coil voicing? I have been really considering buying it, I am trying to play more funk, blues, RnB etc with it and I was wondering if the single coils will hold up, but I love the hot rodded humbucker option since I play heavy metal or extreme metal sometimes. Thanks!

Thanks my friend! I've been using the single coil voicing a lot actually - possibly my favourite. There are some clips on my review (ua-cam.com/video/7dqM7mDMVeU/v-deo.html) if you haven't already come across it, and I'm using single coil through a clean amp here ua-cam.com/video/k4BmWMmV1vM/v-deo.html
