This video took a l o n g time! Hope you like it. What band do you want to see a guitar riff evolution for next?
Andrew Baena Devin Townsend but include SYL
Do Northlane next
Northlane my guy
Honestly I'd really like to see Korn's riff evolution. They've progressed so much over the years.
What if deftones tuned down! There are so many riffs that would sound sick as FUCK. Even some of the 8 string ones man (how far you tune down is obviously up to you) That'd be a sick video and i'm personally very curious what you could do with that.
Awesome video man
evolution of Deftones: from E standard to drop E
no, bored is definetly in drop D
Ferdi2724 yeah but en9 is in standard, and most of adrenaline too actually. i’m pretty sure 7 words is the only other one that’s in drop
DZS i mean, as far as the studio version goes, bored is most definitely in drop d. they probably played it in standard live so that they didn’t have to tune down just for one song in the set
All songs on Adrenaline are in E standard
@@Ferdi2724 Nope! 100% E standard
It's crazy to think that Diamond Eyes is already 10 years old. I felt it wasn't that old.
fuckkk I know right
It seems like yesterday I was skating to school blasting Deftones fuck I miss it
That’s how I feel about Saturday night wrist. I had already been a deftones for like 10 years by the time that album dropped. To me it feels like their newer album. But it’s like 16 years old 😢
Stephen is criminally underrated. He's a real riffer, I love his simple but elegant approach. Its crazy how long they have been around too, some straight up OGs
Elegant? No offense love them, but can you explain?
@@puneethvenkatrao987 There's very few complicated chords or even # of chords in his riffs. Like if you take the Be Quiet and Drive main riff, it's just a bounce from an octave chord with an open bass string over to a power chord, back and forth. But Capenter does these variations like the bend in the chorus on the octave chord that just make the riff *his* style. So you can call his riffs pretty simple, but he's got a hell of a lot of rhythm and creativity that add up to make it his unique style. Not too technically complex, but it doesn't have to be to sound great.
@@bernoulli884 the only complicated deftones song I can think of when it comes to guitar is Engine No.9. and even then, it's not exactly a very hard song to play
@@negativespace8358 not difficult to play but to create, thats why his style is unique
For sure. I’ve heard him, Chi (rip) and Abe independently. They’re all super talented but they mesh well with that simple yet, clever approach and delivery.
Deftones is that band that’s heavy af but also gets played on the radio, yet they’re still loved by both metal heads and mainstream rock fans. And they’ve never “sold out”.
the power of truly doing nothing but whatever you want musically
you're a little confused but you've got the spirit
The My Own Summer riff was the fucking game changer I remember.
Edit: I can't believe "Change" dropped almost 20 years ago. Thank you so much for this stroll down memory lane. It was very nostalgic. 🤘
It's funny how you hear 2000 and the first thing you think is, "eh that was like 10 years ago" and then you look at the calendar and you just sit there looking at it like " how the f..."
@@ScytheYT Too fucking true man.
Still jamming to my CDs form these guys, but I must admit I'm still holding onto the hope that they'll release Eros officially😅
@@ScytheYT so true!
10+ years and still in heavy rotation
That whole album Around the Fur has great riffs, probably my favorite Deftones record
Show some love to the main riff of Be Quiet. Two times you played that song in a Deftones vid and both times you only played the end riff :((
Bump
Seriously, makes no sense to do it otherwise
The end riff is the best part imo
Sounded bad for me, maybe cause this guy played it in a 6 string and not a 7 like Stephen did
@@Wulvvesas i know the whole atf was recorded on a 6 string
I feel like...
MOOOOOOOORRRREEEEEEEEE!
Taniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight
joshua lynch Iiiiiii, feeeeel liiiike...FEEL LIIIIIIIIKE MMMOOOOOOOORRRRREEEEEEEEEEE...tooniiiight...
You breeeeeathed
Then you stopped
I haven't seen the butcher
Fuckin eh
that made me laugh out loud.
Or Back To School, Passenger w/ Maynard, Mx, Head-Up. 🤘🏾
They must have taken off on some Rocket Skates and went to Beauty School
@@Ryo7_7 Thank God no back to school tbh
Coming from a hardcore Deftones fanboy, this was actually pretty damn cool to see the evolution in this context. And I love your execution of it with those beautiful g-fiddles, boi.
You did a damn good!
Yep i approve
Most Deftones fans are alllll in. Not too many casual fans of theirs. Seen em 5x live and stupid covid fucked me out of #6
Deftones is one the very few bands I find extended range guitars used wisely. low tunings really serve the songs, not (just) Steph's ego. (sorry if my syntax isn't good I'm French)
...one of the... I find using extended range guitars wisely...
yo man I've corrected your SYNTAX in case you are interested in improving your english. Anyways, couldn't agree more!
Animals as leaders, after the burial, and periphery do a pretty good job with the extended range stuff
Props for playing Needles and Pins the way it was intended!
TheBr0seph rip chi
THIS^^^^
Probly my favorite deftones track
Great vid....disappointed that you didn't include the riff to Hexagram though...that is one of the best album openers of all time.
Absolutely agree still one of top favorite Deftones songs
Back to school
At least he has my own summer. That riff goes hard.
He could have put that in in place of his needles and pins bass section. You know, "guitar riffs" and all...
@@oth3w actually chino hates that song, he says that the album start with feticieira
Their old stuff was so underrated. I love it.
for real bro, adrenaline has some of my fav riffs engine no 9 is a straight up BANGER!!
@@RalseiSmokinAFatBlunt dude yeah, adrenaline and around the fur both are so fucking good, criminally underrated
Literally, every Deftones album is underrated as they are all amazing, and I don’t think the entire worlds attention would be enough for them:)
If you like adrenaline style songs, you should look up the song like Linus. Its fucking perfection
@@RalseiSmokinAFatBlunt engine no 9 still amazes me its in E standard, don't know how standard tuning could sound so damn heavy
I think the riff from CMND/CTRL from Diamond Eyes deserves a spot too. Great, simple riff in a great song.
I Love that album lol
AND I SAY COMMAND JUST BECAUSE I CAN
that is probably the only deftones song I cant stand
It's kinda hard to tell if the riffs so much as "evolved" or got more refined they've always been somewhat moody sinster and atmospheric throughout the bands career it just the delivery that's changed mostly .
Gotta agree with you, the structure hasn't changed that much, funny how refinement makes the sound like an entirely different band!
I totally agree with you
Yeah most of these rock/metal bands' riff writing don't really "evolve", they're just delivered in a slightly different way or flat out devolve lol, evolution isn't the proper term for it at all.
@@mymfinbizness Steph seems to be hinting at stepping up chops on the latest song "Ohms". The galloping sections in the beginning and end are definitely a little more fleet fingered than their older work.
yeah like their half choruses have always been there (at first only playing the first half of the chorus, then doing more for another)
It’s pretty cool to how you can hear the influence early deftones has on Suicide Silences early riffs
As I lay dying too. They have a song that's very similar to change
@@preston2636 which one?? I was really into AILD after high school but stopped following after you know…
@@MiguelRamirez-cr7gh I Never Wanted is the song I think
You can definitely tell the difference between a riff written by Stephen and the ones written by Chino.
I’ve learned every Deftones riff at least once and none of them get old. Not playing them, not hearing them. Gotta love the sounds Steph has created over the years. Hard to mimic with songs like digital Bath. Awesome job, my guy. 👌
Also, poltergeist is an underrated riff IMO. Best riff on that album
Even now when I hear the My On Summer riff, I get "excited"
I don't care if the riffs are played incorrectly, they sound freaking AMAZING
Reminded me how much I love deftones. Thanks brooooooo 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Deftones is my all time favorite band. And you're one of my favorite music youtubers. Watching this was an amazing trip of nostalgia and fun. Thank you Andrew!!
White pony what a masterpiece..makes me feel all the emotions I have left in me
I think the riffs have gotten a lot more atmospheric throughout the years but that’s not a bad thing
Sheeeet man!!! You got SO many in there!!! I’ve been looking for a video likes this. I like how each one almost flows together. You can really identify the sound each album has. So awesome
Dude I really appreciate that you included Verses and Chorus. For real, that was so helpful. You're the man
Thanks man!
Deftones rules!🔥👌
Awesome skills my guy - sang all these songs in my head with my headphones on full blast.
Just got my 8 string today, so of course i just had to play diamond eyes lol. Great playing man, always enjoyable to watch your channel
Awesome lot of work clearly went into that, great stuff!
This is a fucking awesome video. Great job on all these covers
This popped up in on my home feed just now. Instant sub! I'm a sucker for anything Deftones and this was fucking awesome. I look forward to scoping out the rest of your channel.
Killer riffs my dude 😳
You killed it man, excellent work and like the other guy aid, props for Pins and Needles on the bass. Good taste in instruments as well.
It's actually crazy how many tracks you didn't do that are absolute bangers. Which just shows how potent Deftones are! Great vid as always dude!
This mt favorite band, so glad u got around to em 😤
insane how ahead of their time they were and still are honestly, be quiet and drive is one of my favourite songs of all time
Deftones it's life, great video Andrew ✨🙌🏻
Awesome vid man, well played.
Very nice work bro, you play well and it sounds nice! Subed and like
Deftones completely changed my mind about music and some other things in life too. They evolve so do we
You played Bored a bit too fast but thank you so much for this video! I'm a huge fan of Deftones and Stef is the sole guy that made me wanna play guitar and I have to thank him too for that. This was so cool to watch! Thanks!
Andrew, my man!!! You got amazing guitar skills. Also, great taste in music. Deftones is one of my all-time favorite bands!!! Keep it up brother!! You're great!!🤘
Hella well played ✌ i can tell steph is a big inspiration to you.
Ride on bro🤘🏻🤘🏻Love every album these guy put out. All I wanna do now is play deftones riffs
you f-n rock bro..great vid!
Deftones are a riff goldmine, sick job man!
Can't wait for the new album this year! Stef is one of the most underrated guitarists out there honestly (Chino too honestly, he's written some of their best stuff)
Love it!!! Always love your videos!
of all riffs you left out Kimdracula?!
And the self titled album deserved the intro to battle axe
Jack Stieben ohh great point, and hexagram
They play the chart songs. Not the real deep cuts because they are not truly fans
When Girls is a fucking heavy riff too
Thank you Andrew for playing “my own summer”. That is a song that is a home hitter for me. It’s definitely my most favorite of their discography.
Issues riff evolution. Great job as always man.
Great video Andrew!
Ah, Deftones. My favorite band of all time. Also, bonus points for playing the Poltergeist riff! That song is nasty af, boi!
Absolutely love Deftones! Great covers
One of my favorite bands of all time. They just kill it
Nice job dude, cool vid!
Man, Koi No Yokan came out my Senior year of college, along with Mastodon's The Hunter (in the same month if I remember correctly), and it was all I listened to for months. Oddly, my favorite riffs of Yokan are some of the deep cuts - Goon Squad, Romantic Dreams (the way each riff at different times is either the verse or chorus), and What Happened to You.
Nice vid. It's funny to see how I would've picked completely different songs for a similar list. Goes to show how many great riffs this band has, I guess
Finally some love for Deftones. Need more of this
Dat Diamond Eyes riff!
Even more gorgeous on that stunning Ibanez!
Recording video today for my next cover too - Just happens to also be Deftones!
One other track i'd have loved to have seen on here would've been Have You Seen The Butcher; if only for the metal face it brings out!
Awesome video man! I really love that you included Sextape, definitely one of my favorites from Deftones 🔥
Excellent! 🤙🏽
GREAT STUFF SIR!!!
Awesome job sir. 👏
Soundtrack of my early 20s.... what a great and fun time in music and life!
Very good! Classic tones, thanks
Sick. Deftones are my favorite band and the reason I have so many guitars, due to all their evolutions. I have an autographed signature edition esp Stephen Carpenter 7 string
I wouldn’t consider Digital Bath a ‘riff’ oriented song or ‘Change’
Honestly, White Pony wasn't a riffing album, it was full of cohesive songs.
You're always my best! Everywhere I see you!
Hey, you got my respect for this , I LOVE DEFTONES!!!
That purple guitar seems really warm sounding through my monitors. I enjoyed this though. Stephen has a way of getting that massive double tracked guitar tone even in parts with just one guitar and you got that here.
Now you’re digging into the the “root” of my influences to play guitar in a band. They are one of the best studio and live bands. They can’t stop getting better and better.🤘🏾
Dope man!
It’s hard not to like anything deftones. Good job! 👍🏻
I'd say Cradle Of Filth but that'd be about an hour long video. What about Mastodon
Deftones was a staple of my teenage years and stepping into my adulthood. Steph Carpenter is the one guitarist that I can truly relate to. Thank you for this video Andrew! You rock!
Love that ibby!!!
I wanna go jam some DEFTONES now . Great vid!
Awesome job bro fucking perfect
Awesome choice!
Those are some good looking guitars, bro!
Sick! Thank you.
That was awesome!
You should do a Korn riff evolution next that would be sick🤘
Notice how their style evolves in two’s. First two albums similar, next two similar, etc. thinking Eros would be a lot like SNW
me with a broken right earphone wondering why he's playing nothing
It was my left earbud, I didn't have my right one in, and was wondering what was wrong
Nice way to showcase a legendary band 🤘
This brought me back to my teenage years. Thank u
Good Work!
Adrenaline is completely in E Standard mate. Not Drop D. Still a great video though. Love it
SomeRandomPersonOnUA-cam you can still play a song that’s written in standard in drop D
Wes Horton I mean yeah, that’s very obvious. But when a song like Engine no. 9 is written in E Standard, it’s easier to play it in that tuning u know what I mean? Instead of having to constantly switch between the 2nd fret for the E note, to the other frets like what he did
Bored was written in drop D, obviously..
Duane Frailey no it wasn’t. If u look up the Dunlop interview with Chino and Stephen, they talk about all the different tunings and steph says that Adrenaline is in E Standard. U can look up the tabs for it as well. He even plays it in E Standard whenever he plays it live. The only Deftones songs that r in Drop D r Hole in the Earth, Xerces, and their cover of The Chauffeur by Duran Duran.
Duane Frailey Even though it can be played in Drop D, that doesn’t mean it was originally written in Drop D
You could have played more from SNW - beware, combat. But amazing job
God I love Cherry Waves...
Excellent video by the way
well who else is gonna go play deftones for hours now
As a die hard Deftones fan I loved this!!!!
Deftones, the best band ever
Dope hoodie, my pal.
Awesome video, Deftones is one of my all time favorites
Btw, what bass are you using for Needles and Pins? It looks and sounds great
It's a Dingwall
Great video
