Yet somehow, he got put on the left, fuckin lol, and retired because what was the point? To be 2nd best to players who weren't even close to his standard of play? Lampard or Gerrard aren't even close to him when it comes to passing/vision, he was wasted for England. Such a shame.
Time to say goodbye for real this time. It has been an honor to watch this man play football for my entire lifetime of being a supporter. Brilliant. On sunday we see two of the best in the game gone, it will be a sad day.
You got the Xabi Alonso quote wrong, alonso did not say that, Xavi did. Paul Scholes what a legend, easily an all time great, I always call him one of the best and worse tacklers. He and Gerrard should have Played Centre together rather than Frank Lampard. My best compliment to Scholes? Second best midfielder I have seen in the flesh, simple as. Respect from a LFC Fan.
Don't forget that Scholes has played alongside many different players during his career at United, too. Of course there are other players of comparable skill, but what made Scholes' career special is that he adapted to many generations of the Manchester United team, and didn't rely on other players to up his game. In fact quite the opposite is true - you take Scholes out of the team and, often, many players failed to shine.
this 'ZizouMerci' character on UA-cam is a clown! nobody pay any attention! He's a full on Zidane fan.. fair enough, he wouldnt be the first! but he well and truly knows Scholes is just as good, if not even better than Zidane because hes that threatened by Scholes and people believing Scholes to be the best theyve seen play... hes on every Scholes video on UA-cam saying the same shit and trying to change peoples minds about this Scholes/Zidane thing! "Scholes is the best of his generation"
Sad to say he was regarded a better player in other countries other than our own. If only we took advantage of his talent instead of looking to other overrated English players like Rooney. You know he's world class when one of the greatest teams in football history (Barca) produce there players using Scholes as there model. Hard to imagine what he would of achieved if he was Spanish.
i cried watching this video.what a player paul scholes.THE best ever! all the greats in the game acknowledged that.you name them! messi, xavi, zidance, ronaldinho, pele, maradona, ronaldo, edgar davids, george best, bobby charlton, dennis law, luis figo.m sad hes retired :( cant wait for his testimonial match though :)
yeah... Scholes, really great player, Gerrard..fantstic, Lampard.. genius, Beckham one of the best... so why didn't we win anything???????????? not one small thing.. nothing. Sweden, Portugal, crap teams beat our ass......
Pele's quote proves how unique he is! those 10 dislikes must have came from aston villa fans, still holding grudge coz he scored a amazing goal against them!
easily a legend if i wanted my son to b a footballer i would have asked him to idolise scholes witht doubt the most amazing english player ive ever seen
Some of these quotes, are quiet simply, not true. Ronaldo never said that about him, Ronaldinho didn't either. Scholes was a great player, but I believe that his talents is only recognised in the UK. Ask anyone around the world, and they would never mention his name. I know when other footballers and managers praise a player, that actually means something. Whereas, when fans say things about a player or club, it doesn't have the same impact because they don't train, play or watch a him daily.

saying rooney is overrated makes me doubt your knowledge about football...surely when you have players like iniesta, xavi in your team....you can boast about winning trophies...but what these english dont realize is that putting soo much pressure on one player often results in bad performances...you need playerd to shoulder the burden...england doesnt have that kind of players...
He's ginger, he has asthma, he wasn't fast, he wasn't big, but boy could he play football. This guy is the perfect role model, he proved that a footballing brain and hard work is superior to anything else. He disappeared off the pitch and was humble to go with his amazing talent. Never will we see another player like Paul Scholes. As a Man Utd fan, it was an honor to have him play in red for his whole career. Thanks Scholes, my favorite player, my idol, my hero
The most extravagantly talented footballer england have had for 20 years, a mesmerizing passer of the ball who knew where everyone was and what to do with as soon as he got the ball. No player can replicate the flatness and elegance of his long balls, nor the ability to slow the game to whatever pace he wanted. Pirlo and Xavi are close in terms of passing, but there will never be a player of that passing ability as well as scholes's natural scoring talent. A true legend of football
The statistics favour Paul Scholes over Xavi Hernandez and Andrea Pirlo because he has been a consistent presence in the Manchester Utd midfield for almost 20 years, has won 10 league titles, 4 F.A. cups, and 2 Champions League gongs and played in two more finals (he should have started against Barca in '11). He had to adapt his game to be in a less attacking role and more a midfield talisman, and Fergie pleaded with him to come out retirement. That is Paul Scholes in a nutshell.
AND please, Scholes at his peak was in the same era as Zidane, Figo, Davids, etc who in their own rights were world-class calibre but Scholes were at least on the same level, if not higher.. But you got mye eyes SQUINTING when you simply used the word good for Scholes. And no, English media dont hype about Scholes, they hyped ridiculously MORE about Lampard and Gerrard. None of them are and never will be in the same mould as Scholes.
What? Stupid response. You don't think Xavi or Pirlo are close to Scholes? I'm a utd fan btw, so if anything my opinion of him would be higher than that of most people. Him being English only improves the general perception of him, seeing as the English media like to hype up all our players and make them out to be world beaters. Scholes is good, but there are other players of similar quality to him, you can't deny that.
Same here, dude! I cant believe this made me cry, the music along with reading the quotes about Scholes. For me, England National Football Team treated him like shit, criminally being forced to play on the left side despite him being very awkward doing so. He is good enough individually to rub shoulders with the best midfielders in the world both for club and country, there was never any doubt on tht.
One of the things that make him a legend for me is this: 2002 World cup press conference prior to England Vs Argentina. The world's media are there, someone ask's Mr. Scholes "Who is your favourite player?" to which Paul Shcoles answer's "Frankie Bunn.........he scored six goals in a league cup tie against Scarborough once." The media ask's again for a player he admires, Scholes' answers "Andy Ritchie". Brilliant. Amazing player and amazing at press conference's I would say.
Thierry Henry in 2012: "United always had many amazing players, but whenever we faced them we were always, always, always scared of what Paul Scholes could do. Ask anyone from that old Arsenal team, they will tell you the same." "If you let him play, he can kill you, and for me he was so underrated. The way he plays: one touch, arriving late into the box, the way he strikes the ball, his vision, his passing. Incredible."
I know what he has done. He's one of my idols, but in my eyes he still made that just about him. He didn't comment anything that would describe what a player scholes is. Pele could have said that about any playmaker, because a good player from any big team, could have made Pele score more goals than he did in that time. I know he isn't arrogant, but he could have said something else about Scholes.
hmmmm when mentioning my dream cm of Scholes and Keane hard to leave out Giggsy and Beckham for a midfield four id have over any other and i dont just mean of utd past midfielders i mean in the history of football ever! i think i need fresh underwear lol aaaah they where the days my friend!! im sure they would give the current Barcelona side a run for their money like no other! (perhaps a rose tinted view but id argue the point till i die and dont see me getting to many dissenters somehow)
I remember the first time I saw Scholes play at Old Trafford with my dad. I spent the entire 90 minutes askng my dad if he was wearing some kind of special boots, or if all the other players were playing badly because I couldn't understand how 1 man could control every single second of an entire match. I sat there and watched as he did things only a few could ever do, without even thinking about it, he didn't even have to try, it was just natural to him. A god given gift of a player.
Scholes is truly special. such a crying shame England didnt use him as they should of. Sticking him out on the left wing, to accommodate lesser players. Fuckin joke. what i love about scholes is the complete composure he has on a football pitch. everything he does is just so natural so perfect. The best this country has ever produced. I will be truly sad when this man retires for good. He is one of the reasons to watch football. From a Diehard Arsenal fan. Much respect Scholsey
I remember the 1999 season when peter schmeichel retired, i cried as he was my favourite player (plus i was 9 lol) and i thought that would bother me more than anything else. Seeing Scholes leave united was like a part of your life being taken away, going to the matches and seeing the things he does irl not on a t.v screen is an honour. Amazing to see him come back with the same drive, consistentcy, just the pure class you can only get from scholes, george best, bobby charlton.
I see a massive irony in Pele's comment, in terms of the whole thing. That guy is really annoying me recently, his recent outbursts that Neymar is better than Messi, the way he always has to squeeze in something about how many goals hes scored or how good he is, even when quoting Paul Scholes, maybe he should take a leaf out of Paul Scholes' book and know when to stop talking, and just let things be the way they are, everyone rates him so why keep talking? He's ruining himself. Rant over, sorry.
@tractorlolhaha he's not, Xavi was what? 27-29 years old when he really become great, before that 2 goals per season and one season he didnt even score one goal......Xavi 649 games - 64 goals in crap la liga....and paul Scholes 676 games - 150 goals....Scholes was great all the time....Xavi only been an amazing player the last few seasons.......I know goals dont count for everything, but Scholes was great from his first game and Xavi wasnt..........the last years Xavi has been better
@ZizouMerci I think your misquoted - he said Scholes was one of the rare most complete footballers he ever met and that he regrets not playing alongside him. He never said he was the BEST midfielder of the generation but I did remember him saying that along only with Ronaldo - Scholes is one of the best players he had ever watched and he Zidane said all of this BEFORE Scholes retired. Its also worth noting that Scholes is not very popular in England but all the top players admire him
@RodelIturalde yep i would agree with laudrup, in my opinion i've seen alot of midfield greats in my life including zidane, laudrup, xavi, mattheus, all different in there own way but i've never seen anyone as complete as scholes, he played as a number 10, attacking midfield and central midfield throughout his career, has scored over 100 goals for united and has the best range of passing i've seen watching football, short and long it doesn't matter all you have to do is run into space to get it
i have no problem saying scholes is top class midfielder.. we all know he is very good midfielder.. but all these quotes are kind of media creation fro media.. i mean from english media.. we know english press/media like to overhype.. when they write"Zidane :scholes the best i ever played against" i dont see any video of Zidane saying it. when they say"5 barcelona players ask for Scholes shirt" i dont see any picture or video about it" anyone can argue with me about this?
He is the footballer's footballer. If you know anything about football and watch the game closely you will realise genius when you see it. Messi, pele, zidane, Davids, Ronaldo, Maradona, Best - who are we to argue with some of the greatest players of all time? Scholes was a genius. I'm waiting for the Gerrard quotes.. I won't hold my breath.
fair enough, I grew up supporting United through their barren run from early 2000s to 2006/07 and honestly one of my favourite players was Steven Gerrard. could strike a ball so cleanly and make those runs, and blast the shot straight into the corner. but I shall not let Gerrard steal Scholes' thunder, Scholes is the man in this video.
paul scholes, the best player the premier league will ever see, an absolute inspiration to young players, and untouchable on the football pitch, his passing was nearly machine like it is so accurate, scholes was blessed with a talent unlike any other, all the typical best players in the world are saying they couldn't touch this guy, really says a lot for how good he really was.
I follow football for the beautiful game. I'm not a fan of a single team but I admire teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich. Paul Scholes is one of the reasons why I started to watch football. Been following football and Paul Scholes since the 90's. He is just another reason why football is called the beautiful game.
Pele is the player who has scored the most goals in his career. More than 1100 goals. He is not arrogant, just the best scorer of all time. All he is doing is showing respect and saying that he would have loved to play next to the ginger prince. Scholes makes the whole team preform better, and the best goalgetters score more goals.
Whilst Scholes is undoubtedly a genius, with exceptional passing, shooting and heading abilities, I can't agree when people describe him as the 'complete' midfield player, given that he is one of the worst tacklers I've ever seen in my life. I'm not disputing that he is a great player, worthy of a place in any team, but nonetheless, a complete midfielder he is not.
I absolutely agree, I was at OT for one of his fantastic European performances against Milan in 2010. He sees the game in a completely unique way. He had the ball and the entire stadium yelled 'shoot', Scholes faked the shot and played Park through to score. The most simple yet genius piece of football I've ever seen live.
Offer me four Gerrards and Lampards or a 36 year old Paul Scholes and the ginger genius wins everytime. My favourite footballer ever and absolutely privleged I got to grow up watching him play, you put him in our team tomorrow and he'd still be our best player, mind you if you put him in any team tomorrow he'd probably be their best player.
@okano186 Yes, but Paul Scholes said "I'm not the best of my generation Emile Heskey is." Michael Owen quoted "I don't think theres anyone else who is capable of the impossible - the passing, the balance & vision, I'm not the best striker, Heskey is." Paul Scholes i think is humble for saying that. Everyone knows Heskey can score past Germany.
all the talk about scholes the best midfielder better than Zidane and Xavi surprise me.. their ability maybe more or less..Scholes is all round midfielder, Xavi game is based on passing, and Zidane has superior ball control.. but the truth that we witnessed is Zidane and Xavi won World Cup and EURO..
They say many things like this to great players, he was, no doubt, one hell of a midfielder. But the best ever, doubt it. Michael Laudrup got same kind of qoutes from some of the ones who is qouted here, about him being "The best player in the world, I can't believe he hasn't won the title as best player." - Guardiola.
Arguably one of the very few players in the last 12 or 13 years who could play an inch perfect 60 or 70 yard pass and make it out to be as easy as a simple 5 yard pass. You know he is something rare when legends like Zidane and Pele say it would have been perfect to play alongside him
I was expecting trolls from Liverpool or City to be on here, i read loads of messages and not one bad comment. You cant say anything bad about this man. He is as humble as they come, does what he has to and back home to the family. The best midfielder in my opinion United have ever had
the quote that shook me most was Pele's comment 'if he was playing with me, I would have scored so many more'.. baring in mind that Pele scored 1283 goals in 1367 games, it's hard to believe that a player like him would say such a thing. Goes to show how good Paul Scholes really was.
What an absolute legend, Unbelievable to watch live just his movement off the ball was unlike anyone elses. Cannot believe this video has 6 dislikes. Must have been scholes himself. very humble man never liked being praised or in the spotlight. Favourite ever player by a mile. legend.
An absolutely invaluable player. One of the best ever, and my favourite without a doubt. The fact that brilliant players like Pele, Maradonna, Zidane, Figo and Ronaldinho all compliment him on being brilliant, shows that the man is one of the best of all time. An absolute LEGEND.

haw many players do you know who can control the whole game the way he did....pirlo??? xavi??? they are good passers with awesome vision...but one thing they never had and never will if the ability to control a whole football match
Mate, I absolutely love every single word in your tribute to Scholes. As quoted by Roy Keane which sent shivers down my spine; No celebrity bullshit or self promotion. An amazingly gifted player who remained an unaffected human being."
Dude, I always see this kind of response whenever theres a praise being give to Paul Scholes. Maybe you just dont get it or maybe its true, If only Scholes wasnt English then probably he had been greatly appreciated with no one being place above him.
I'm fucking crying right now! I know it's the amazing Ludovico music, but seeing these quotes about my favourite player who probably be gone for good in 7 months.............I feel emotional. I love you Scholesy! Still the best even at 38.
Classy tribute mintmatt69, I could actually imagine Scholesy watching this and being really humbled and maybe even a little embarrassed at the attention his genius has commanded. It has been a pleasure to watch this artist from the start of his career
Best player of his generation in my opinion was Zidane, so to read ZZ say that speaks volumes of Scholes' quality. So glad he signed another year. He never had any pace to lose, so surely can play on at the very least another year. All hail Paul Scholes.
i doubt some of these are even true. henrys one??? henry thinks scholes is his favourite player? the question probably was who is your favourite player in manu, not who is your all time favourite player. They are either not true, or taken way out of context.
jus got his name on my new united shirt to mark his retirement and managed to get it signed by him prior to otelul galati game unbelievable.. he give me a crazy look when i told him he was the best, most humble man ever! no doubt he was massively underated
show me video Zidane saying Scholes the best midfielder of generation.. i think this all hype from english media.. i have seen video of english journalist asked Zidane who the best ever played against. Zidane said Ronaldo Brazil..
Great vid, thanks mate! How can you argue with all those quotes. Just a shame he didn't feature in the more vital games towards the end of this season. Cheers Paul, you're an absolute footballin legend who will never be forgotten!
Scholes and Keane both had great engines. Box to box guys. Physical fitness can cover alot of sins. A lot of players are just not fit enough.....as the old saying goes "you can't fire a cannon from a canoe."
OMG! Can someone please tell me what soundtrack was used for this video? Title and artiste/composer please. Sounds to me like the work of either Yanni or Yiruma but I'll never guess the title without assistance.
i watched best, law and charlton and paul is in that class, the only english player in the last 20 years with Gaza and Robson, who would get in Spain or barcelona's team of today, fergie hasnt replaced him and its a big problem
My favourite player ever. There are a lot of players which I admire for their talents, but none to me compare to no fuss Paul Scholes. "On the pitch you can’t catch him. Off the pitch he disappears.”- Luis Figo. Sums him up.
even if i admire your words and your passion..u also should have nominated teams like juventus and milan..even if in this time they aren t have a good time..except juve which is comin back betwen the big teams of football..
im not saying all these quotes not true.. but like i said english media overhype it as scholes is english, their player.. zidane could have more quotes about him from other players if media/press write about it..
His tackling may have been laughable at best and he may not have been the most skillful ball worker, but all he needed was a football and nothing more. He utilized it and knew it more than any scholar of the game.
France legend Zinedine Zidane hailed Paul Scholes as 'the complete footballer', and admitted that 'One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career.
You should change the title of the video to Emile Heskey in quotes... 'He is my favourite player' - Thierry Henry, 'Even at Real Madrid, the players ask me 'what is he like'' - David Beckham
Greatest Midfield player of all time. There will never be a player as good as him on the field and he is a true role model off the pitch as well. Man United will never be able to replace him. Never
When I watch Scholes or Giggs play,I wish I was a football player. There have been certainly better players out there, but I don't think you can find someone who loves playing football as these two do.
I don't know if all the quotes were really said like that. For example Zidane has many times said Ronaldo was his favourite player so it couldn't have been Scholes. Where did you find the quotes?
the greatest thing about this legendary player is that he has never spoke for himself and he has never won the Ballon D'Or not even once. but his brilliance is the difference above all ends
Fantastic little tribute.. well done!! I love he fact that the legends of the game of football itself past present and future all say how wonderful a player he is some even saying he is their favourite.
I'm glad he is back, not just because Manchester United need him but he truly is a class act to watch... doesn't matter what game he's in - he can make something magical happen from nothing.
I love the quotes but the music doesn't fit at all. It creates a mood as though he had died rather than just retired. The quotes make you realise just how good a player and a humble human being he was.
i think xavi is closer to scholes than xabi i mean hes good too but xavi is more technical and has better vision in his passes xabi is great too but i would prefer to have xavi on my team
after 28/05/2011 in Wembley, after United lost to FC Barcelona 3-1 in UCL Final 2011 5 FC Barcelona player's asked him to exchange the jersey. The one who got there first was Iniesta!
Just because they were rivals doesn't mean they can't respect each other. Even Keane considered Vieira a brilliant player and vice-versa. There are videos of Henry talking about Scholes.
sorry pal. scholes would get in any best 11 on the planet. enough evidence to back that statement up. quiet but very funny guy. thanks for everything and best of luck
First time I saw him play live was at The Hawthorns. He absolutely destroyed West Brom single handed. No one could get near him. I was in awestruck by him as a 12 year old
He did say that about Scholes. He also said his biggest regret in his footballing career was not playing with Paul Scholes. It's as if you're doubting geniuses of football.
It's amazing a player of his quality can be forced out of the England team, after reading all those quotes it's impossible to understand what Eriksson was thinking.
next thing we're gonna see on this is : "He is the best player i've ever played with. Better than Ronaldinho, better than Xavi. The best player ever in the world." Messi
I don't care what people say.. I really am crying right now.. and then when Giggsy retires, I'll cry my soul out.. and I'll be left without football heroes.. FOREVER UNITED!!
The reason there will never be another Paul Scholes is because no one has his abilities AND his character, ie quiet and reserved. One of the all time greats.
For me Scholes is the best. Xavi, Pirlo, Riquelme are good too but no one better than Scholes :)
There's one missing, I was watching a Champions League Program roughly in '04 or '05 and the reporter asked:

So underutilized by England
Thank you Paul Scholes.. Really, thank you
its sad that we can never find a player like scholes again. we really missed u scholesy!
Me: "Scholesy's retired, Dad"
Dad: "Yeah, he could've been playing in the current Barcelona team, the way he controls the ball and passes"
Time to say goodbye for real this time. It has been an honor to watch this man play football for my entire lifetime of being a supporter. Brilliant. On sunday we see two of the best in the game gone, it will be a sad day.
I always feel honoured to watch this man play, the greatest footballer i've ever seen.
"I'll play him wide on the left every match and make him retire" - Sven Goran Eriksson
A class apart, yet, never a superstar.
Miss him!
When the barcelona team drew straws to see who could ask for his shirt, you know someone is world class
You got the Xabi Alonso quote wrong, alonso did not say that, Xavi did.

Just proves England can still produce class, its not all about Portugal or Spain....we have Scholsey boy back here!
There are few midfield generals in football today. But there is only one midfield lord. Top of the world, Paul.
Sad to say he was regarded a better player in other countries other than our own. If only we took advantage of his talent instead of looking to other overrated English players like Rooney. I love this video the entire footballing world know/understand what a player he was.He was born with a gift!
Pretty sure pele got him mixed up with Nicky Butt during 2002 World Cup
I personally think Ineista and Xavi are the best at short passes, but Scholes and Pirlo are definitely in the top 3 long passers with Xavi.
Although I love Scholes you have got your statistics wrong here. Xavi has won 24 major trophies in 15 years which is clearly better.
A real players player. And England put him on the left too accommodate Dennis Wise.
easily a legend if i wanted my son to b a footballer i would have asked him to idolise scholes witht doubt the most amazing english player ive ever seen

The world's media are there, someone ask's Mr. Scholes "Who is your favourite player?" to which Paul Shcoles answer's "Frankie Bunn.........he scored six goals in a league cup tie against Scarborough once."
The media ask's again for a player he admires, Scholes' answers "Andy Ritchie".
Brilliant. Amazing player and amazing at press conference's I would say.
Thierry Henry in 2012:
"United always had many amazing players, but whenever we faced them we were always, always, always scared of what Paul Scholes could do. Ask anyone from that old Arsenal team, they will tell you the same."
"If you let him play, he can kill you, and for me he was so underrated.
Its also worth noting that Scholes is not very popular in England but all the top players admire him
@RodelIturalde
yep i would agree with laudrup, in my opinion i've seen alot of midfield greats in my life including zidane, laudrup, xavi, mattheus, all different in there own way but i've never seen anyone as complete as scholes, he played as a number 10, attacking midfield and central midfield throughout his career, has scored over 100 goals for united and has the best range of passing i've seen watching football, short and long it doesn't matter all you have to do is run into space to get it
i have no problem saying scholes is top class midfielder.. we all know he is very good midfielder.. but all these quotes are kind of media creation fro media.. i mean from english media.. we know english press/media like to overhype.. when they write"Zidane :scholes the best i ever played against" i dont see any video of Zidane saying it. when they say"5 barcelona players ask for Scholes shirt" i dont see any picture or video about it" anyone can argue with me about this?
The best midfielder in my opinion United have ever had
the quote that shook me most was Pele's comment
'if he was playing with me, I would have scored so many more'.. baring in mind that Pele scored 1283 goals in 1367 games, it's hard to believe that a player like him would say such a thing.
If u kept seeing his goal on Barcelona CL 2008 semi-final through this amazing video!!
LIKE :D
i think xavi is closer to scholes than xabi i mean hes good too but xavi is more technical and has better vision in his passes xabi is great too but i would prefer to have xavi on my team
after 28/05/2011 in Wembley, after United lost to FC Barcelona 3-1 in UCL Final 2011
5 FC Barcelona player's asked him to exchange the jersey.
It's amazing a player of his quality can be forced out of the England team, after reading all those quotes it's impossible to understand what Eriksson was thinking.
next thing we're gonna see on this is :
"He is the best player i've ever played with.
