My main issue with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is its inefficient use of screen space. While UA-cam recently received a better layout, many other apps still don't take full advantage of the larger screen, especially compared to the OnePlus Open or the Galaxy Z Fold 6. It’s frustrating that Google doesn’t allow the status bar at the top to fade away for a more immersive experience, or that Gmail still lacks a dual-pane layout in portrait mode. Additionally, as you've pointed out, there's no support for floating apps, and multitasking capabilities are limited. Most of these issues are software-related, and I really wish Google would prioritize improving them. That said, I do prefer the Pixel's outer screen over the Z Fold 6, but when it comes to multitasking and overall software experience, the Z Fold 6 is still a clear step ahead.

Honestly, this is what the stock android experience is like for me which is why I don't care about stock android. I actually enjoy the customizations that a Samsung and OnePlus provide. I prefer Samsung's browser, calendar, and email apps to Google stock apps. I prefer the multitasking, the additional options like GoodLock, Secure Folder, etc I just really don't care about having stock android anymore.
Finally someone talking about the foldable aspect ratio issue. So many people kept begging for wider foldables without thinking about the experience of using apps and how they will scale
Having the P9PF now for a couple days, from Fold 4, I am loving it, but have found it is WAY less fun than One UI. I am already missing individual app volumes (turn down annoying forced ads, while still listening to music or UA-cam), the ability to just press on an image in gallery and create perfect clipped Images or stickers of friends, family, pets etc. Google photos is weird and way too complicated to just create a folder on device and organized, they have the weird Albums plus on device collections? Why not just put those abilities in the same place. I miss the sidebar, which held all my multitasking groups (2 or 3 apps launching together like app pairs). The ability to choose side by side or top bottom in multi without having to turn my phone. I agree with everything you said though too. Google needs to seriously up their multitasking game, popups (that stay on top) need to happen yesterday. By version 2 of their fold, there should be more focus on things that use the big inner screen more. There's a lot to Love too though, so I'm slightly disappointed those things are missing, but so far fairly happy. Love your vids keep em coming.
Oh, and i forgot the stupid positioning of the volume rocker below the power/fingerprint. 99.9% I click the phone off instead of adjusting volume. It's just backwards to what I'm used to. Maybe I'll get used to it, but right now it's annoying me to all hell 😂.
I went from the Z fold 5 to the one plus open. Had to go back to Samsung at the Z fold 6. Samsung software experience makes a huge difference in the experience. Surprised google didn't have those issues worked out before release, I mean they are mainly a software company
I LOVE my Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Never looked at the Z Fold, no need to. Z is too small, narrow. One fixable beef on the 9: To increase Blue Tooth range and stability (a common complaint), turn off A2DP in the developer section. A2DP is an extra step in sound processing that isn't missed in my buds. Otherwise, great job.
I so much appreciate these videos, realistic opinions about things that normal people could feel I wanted to buy it , but these things are truly annoying me, preventing me from buying it I can add also, the lock button above the volume buttons
Apps will eventually catch up and allow for a 4x4 matrix of images. It's early yet. Yep, the lower coil is annoying, not for charging, but for attaching a wallet. It drops 1/8" lower than the case. Annoying, but not a killer, and it actually comes in handy as a finger brace.
I hate that apps just are not as optimized compared to the zfold 6. Everything just seems to look better and fits on the screen better. I wish pixel would fix those things because I like the software experience and the AI tools.
Thank you for talking about floating window multi tasking, I use it so much on my ZF5 for the calculator app. Also I think the aspect ration wouldn't be so bad if they made the phone slightly taller, and less wide since there's a lot of empty space to the left of the front screen. They could have it less wide with more screen area if they were to make the bezels thinner.
A lot of these issues just come down and developers not optimising their apps so they can adapt to different aspect ratios. For example the Amazon app does not scale well at all but the eBay app scales perfectly fine. Both WhatsApp and telegram work great and while Facebook messenger may not have any issues it does not really take advantage of the largest screen. The same issue still impacts tablets, applications are just not optimised to take advantage of larger screens or different aspect ratios or even devices that a just landscape, the Reddit app being one of them. Hopefully if foldables become more popular developers will start pushing update and optimisations for them and if they do that will likely benefit tablets as well.
first pixel fold aspect ratio slaps... I really hope they reconsider or at least have 2 versions 1 square 1 passport like, we really need more options for foldables same as we have for slab phones

Fully agree, the screen is not fully utilized and the aspect ratio got worse compared to Pixel Fold, and the camera bump is really annoying... Your list is almost identical with mine and as I am not still in love with the Pixel software experience as you are, I am again on the hunt - Honor Magic V3 is waiting... 🙂
I'm currently using an old wooden clothes peg on my charging stand. I don't need anything on the P. Stand when the P9PF is in landscape mode, it just works. 👍
I dislike the drop down notification that appears while playing games like COD: Mobile. It appears whenever I get notifications, and is more intrusive than the notification drop down on my S24 Ultra. Coupling this with the thermals while gaming and the inconsistency in gaming quality with the poor charging speed, I ultimately returned my 9 Pro Fold, Watch 3, and Pixel Buds 2 Pro. I look forward to their future plans with this device, but can't overlook it's current flaws for the amount of investment.
When watching videos on UA-cam and it's folded in half I hate the wasted real estate at the top because you can't get rid of the time and icons. I also hate that you can resize the split on certain apps. For example the phone app is split down the middle and would love to resize it to my own preference.
I'd have to agree that this is a great folding phone and something tells me that the third iteration will be the one to get. With that said, after a few weeks with this phone, I do wish that Google had kept the unique shape from the first Fold but simply modernized the build with the better screens, hinge and cameras. I will also agree with Shane on the wireless charging coils being too low. This decision not only creates problems for balance but screwed up a number of case manufacturer's so they either had to recall the cases or they just ignored it so for us, it is buyer beware. Just Google doing Google things I suppose.
Coil position is surely weird. It's just in the middle and not compatible with many changing pad because of alignment. That all apps list looks like android 6 design lol
My least favorite thing is the power button. Next to my 9 Pro XL, it is significantly easier to press (I activate it accidentally often). It feels worse to use, and is made worse with my Toast case. I still prefer the OnePlus Open for the louder speakers, better camera (for portraits and zoom), mute switch, and the infinitely superior charging speed. It is so jarring to go from a phone that's ready to go for the night in 40 minutes vs waiting 2 hours for this thing to fully charge.
Genuine question about the aspect ratio for Minecraft... wouldn't changing the FOV assist with the... well field of view? I know the aspect ration is still weird, but FOV should be able to balance it out
Hey Shane, I have the Google case on mine with a Scosche magnet plate on the outside and when mounted in the car, any type of "decent" vibration wakes the phone every single time. This is the first phone to do that that I've eve had. You think the weird charging coil placement could have something to do with it? Same when I just mount it...screen shuts off for a second or 2 then back on. Also flips out when waking from a portrait mode mounted...turns the FRONT screen on only
Yeah, that's what it sounds like to me. If you're using something that's got a fairly strong magnet the device might not understand what's happening to it.
What about that rediculous hinge on the left hand side and the massive bezels around the front screen ? It's as if they went back 10 years in that department
EDIT: Nope as Shayne mentioned this is being done on device not a cloud server. I tested by disabling data and Wi-Fi and it still did the enhance. Original: Zoom enhanced is software not hardware. You can grab a photo from 5 years ago and use that feature and whether you edit it on the fold or pixel 9 pro xl same results since it's AI in the cloud using a Google server somewhere. I agree though the feature is terrible.
The charging coil is the worst thing for me. It's just thrown me for a loop with my devices. Pixel stand doesn't work. I don't want to use an adapter because I also have other phones so it's annoying to have to remove it just to charge another phone. Can't charge it in the Tesla on the wiring pad because of the placement. So now I have the 9 pro XL and I'm torn between which I want to use as my daily. But if i have to list one thing you didn't have on your list, it's gotta be how hard it is to take a selfie with the backside camera. I have to do all sorts of hand gymnastics to take a picture with the good camera and since most folks are not used to taking a selfie with a foldsable, they all stare at the screen instead of the big camera module. It might have helped to put the module on the opposite side so that it's closer to where folks are staring at when taking selfies in this manner.
Can’t blame the Fold on poor app optimization for responsive sizes. It is on the app designers/devs to build better viewports that take advantage of the tablet screen. Wyze might need an update or two for it to function correctly.
I'm not necessarily blaming anyone for it, just describing the reality. You can make arguments that app makers need to update their apps, but you also have to contend with the fact that they will be updating their app to accommodate an extremely small number of devices. It's just as easy to make an argument that oems need to make their phones better fit the apps that are available.
This goes back to my complaints about American companies but isn't it strange knowing that one plus and and Samsung are actually using an operating system that is developed by Google and they are the ones that have far more options. Wouldn't you think the creators of the actual operating system would have the most options? I know Android is open source, but it is very sad that the creators of the Android operating system are unable to compete what developing their own open source product
I think we have to stop expecting Google to be Samsung or OnePlus or whoever. They are quite clearly going another way - the Apple way. The idea that they make Android, therefore they should have the most stuff just isn't representative of what they're trying to do. Android is a platform and it is diverging right now between two competing strategies. Google wants to be a more experimental Apple.
For a company that is known for good software in my opinion the software is kind of lacking. Yes they added cool ai features for camera stuff, but the multitasking stuff is still quite limited. Only split left/right or top/bottom which depends how you hold it though. And what I hate the most is the default pixel widget on the home screen. For an OS that often times is touted as "you can tune everything how you like it" its very disappointing to have a 4 column wide widget that even if it only takes up 2 columns in width it still "blocks" the whole row. And lastly it is disappointing that they used old camera sensors which where even not super up to date when they where put into the OG pixel and also while I dont need the fastest CPU/GPU its still disappointing and is kind of like 2 generations behind probably. And lastly even when it came out a year later then the Oneplus Open the design looks like a Oneplus Open predecessor in terms of the bezels and the corners on the hinge side sticks out further. Granted this might be because its thinner then the OPO so the hing part needs to be somewhere. On the other hand we have these other chinese/asian foldables which are even thinner and the hinge does not stick out as much on these devices either. So its possible.
This is actually a great intro to a really interesting topic. There are many things that people think of when they think of Android. They think of customization, they think of tweaking tons of settings, they think of utilitarian features galore. The thing is, none of that is what Pixels have really ever been. Google is doing something much more akin to what Apple has been very successful at. It seems to me that the people most disappointed with Pixel phones seem to be the people who go in thinking they are getting something like a Samsung phone when what they're getting is more similar to an iPhone that leans a bit more experimental. The software is fantastic at doing exactly what they aim for it to do and nothing more.
My Fold 9 just broke. I've never dropped it, it won't charge at all-neither with a cable nor wirelessly. So frustrating! i sent it back for repair... For the most part, the device is okay, but it has crashed once or twice, going to a full black screen and only responding to a hard reset. Once, it even disconnected all phone calls, and only a hard reset fixed that as well. Honestly, even a $90 phone works better than this-it’s really frustrating! hope its all fixed when it comes back... Btw the preorder action also ript me off, they never sent me the 300$ and they never returned the device i sent. so...... i like to be positive but i need some reason to be...
Sounds like you've had some pretty bad luck. Hopefully they send you back a new device and you make some progress on your trade-in. Mine was accepted and paid out pretty quickly.
I guess the individual user has a different opinion on the phones camera performance and what they expect to achieve in that moment, myself personally I have taken the same images in the same place across various devices in low light or at night. The Z Fold 6 to me appears to produce the better low light or indeed night shots with zero editing. Having said that, the power of the pixel and the editing tools do support the option of producing some amazing shots. Like them both 👍 I just feel the pixel requires editing where as the Fold 6 appears to produce a more reliable shot in real time......love the channel btw.👍 @@shanecraigtech
I wish it had better dust protection. When I hear the hinge crank when I open it because it has dirt in it really makes me wince. But otherwise I've been so sooooo happy with this phone. It's not affecting how it works at all but does make me go oooh ah my phone 😂😂

Not on this device, but I've had them on Z Folds and my old Pixel Fold. They never *seemed* to lead to anything disastrous and would even disappear.

There's not really much to show, just widgets and folders! Weather, audible and youtube music are the widgets.

Zoom enhance is performed on device. You can turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi and still do it.

It seems to me that the people most disappointed with Pixel phones seem to be the people who go in thinking they are getting something like a Samsung phone when what they're getting is more similar to an iPhone that leans a bit more experimental.
The software is fantastic at doing exactly what they aim for it to do and nothing more.

Just plug it in and accept the pop-up. Nothing special to do.

No need for dev options. Same cable works on other devices? Not all USB C cables carry video.
My Fold 9 just broke. I've never dropped it, it won't charge at all-neither with a cable nor wirelessly. So frustrating! i sent it back for repair... For the most part, the device is okay, but it has crashed once or twice, going to a full black screen and only responding to a hard reset. Once, it even disconnected all phone calls, and only a hard reset fixed that as well. Honestly, even a $90 phone works better than this-it’s really frustrating! hope its all fixed when it comes back... Btw the preorder action also ript me off, they never sent me the 300$ and they never returned the device i sent. so...... i like to be positive but i need some reason to be...
Sounds like you've had some pretty bad luck. Hopefully they send you back a new device and you make some progress on your trade-in. Mine was accepted and paid out pretty quickly.
I don't like that the device is so thin. It makes it harder for me to open it.

Cameras are decent until low light, then I go to the Fold6 👍
You think the Fold 6 is better than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold in low light? Interesting.
I guess the individual user has a different opinion on the phones camera performance and what they expect to achieve in that moment, myself personally I have taken the same images in the same place across various devices in low light or at night.
The Z Fold 6 to me appears to produce the better low light or indeed night shots with zero editing. Having said that, the power of the pixel and the editing tools do support the option of producing some amazing shots.

W25 Chinese Samsung Fold. We knew they could do it they just refused.
I haven't used the device but the weird front screen/hinge combo bothers me because it isn't symmetrical on both sides.
I wish it had better dust protection. When I hear the hinge crank when I open it because it has dirt in it really makes me wince. But otherwise I've been so sooooo happy with this phone. It's not affecting how it works at all but does make me go oooh ah my phone 😂😂
Can't you change the aspect ratio in Minecraft?
