I think the initial motivation for Dr Longo was to make a diet that mimicked fasting 's benefits and be easier to do for cancer patients. i.e. turn off the factors that promoted growth.
    that's my understanding anyways.

      That makes sense.
It might be seen as unethical for a doctor to prescribe a complete fast to a cancer patient, so this diet is a safer approach.

I read his book. It is to get the benefits of fasting without the risks of fasting. Fasting for more a day or two may involve some risk because it stresses the body. However with the fasting mimicking diet you can fast for 5 days. If it activates stemcells that sounds pretty useful as stemcells implies pure rejuvenation. The list of longevity benefits from fasting is quite long. I just saw another video where autophagy is cancer protective as well.

I have done severe caloric restriction. I have also done 5 day fasts several times, where I ate absolutely nothing and only consumed water and black unsweetened coffee. So I can compare both experiences. Once you dip below a 1000 calories, I really don't notice any difference in hunger sensation between eating those 1000 calories and not eating anything at all. So I prefer to go all in and just not eat any calories, and only consume water and black coffee. If anything, the consumption of a few calories stimulates cravings. Its best to do a fast as cold turkey, at least from my experience.

If you eat a whole food, plant based diet with low calorie density (no oils, no nuts, no avocados), 1000 calories can actually seem like more food than you would imagine.
I did an 800 calorie diet for several weeks and lost about 12 lbs. It was not the Prolon diet but I tried to eat alot of nutrient dense foods. I never felt like I was starving. I ate mostly mashed potatoes, oats, fruits and vegetables, and never felt like I was starving, just slightly hungry at times.

You missed the point of Longos keeping some foods in the fasting mimicking diet. These foods are highly nutritious anti-cancer and disease Foods that nourish the body during the 5-day fasting mimicking diet while still getting the benefits of a fast. On a water only extended fast you put severe stresses on your body which can be a detrimental. Longos eating plan avoids the severe stresses nourishes the body and still has the benefits of extended fasting.

I think its worth pointing out that Dr. Longo was clear that the diet was (at least originally) primarily aimed at sick, including those undergoing treatment for cancer, and was developed when it was clear that many older and sick people were unable or unwilling to fast, and in some cases may be the only healthy way they can fast. His book makes clear the benefit of time restricted eating and other forms of fasting for those who are healthy. I think in interviews he has talked about the 5 day fast being roughly equivalent to a 3-4 day conventional fast. As others btl have said, all the money from the products goes to charity or research, he does not profit from it.

Yes! I came to say this. He created it because cancer patients would not fast and their doctors recommended they not fast, so he went to the next best thing. If you are healthy, go ahead and do a water only fast instead of buying the FMD. Also he has said many times that he is not in any way profiting from the FMD. He does not get paid by them, and the money his stock in the company earns gets directly donated to charity. He makes nothing if you buy it. He just helped create it and he believes in it

Dr Longo is a Doctor and he has been researching and studying autophgy in study groups for a while. You might want to read up on what he has done before he created this prolon diet. I think this might be the solution to getting regular people to want to try some form of fasting without giving up food. The science/result behind the FMD is different from Keto. So folks can have a choice to try both during different times. Also, I think the procedes form the sale is going back into research.

again, Thomas is not attacking or denoting any sort of mimicking diet, he’s just explaining what it is that Dr. Longo doesn’t tell you because he’s a scientist turned a businessman. I’m sure Longo has good intentions and wants to reach the masses with his research but I think, he got greedy and went about it the wrong way to charge nearly $200 for a five day program which when you actually look at what you’re getting, you can just simply go get those ingredients at whole foods and do it yourself for less than $100. So then you can start thinking to yourself, thanks for the research long ago but I can do this cheaper

So he's shared his research and formula with you, but also makes it exceptionally convenient for people who may feel intimidated by it. To me, that covers all bases. As far as actual cost, $200 is probably about right when you consider the preparation and shipping that happens on the business side. I'd be willing to bet the margins are not that great. The fasting mimicking diet was initially developed through a grant from the National Cancer Institute for use with cancer patients (short terms fasts protect patients against the toxic effects of chemo), which is why it was designed to mimick fasting and not possibly contribute to cachexia. It was then developed commercially for use mostly targeting metabolic syndrome. Your review was weirdly not positive in spite of a mostly positive review, with unexplained disses such as "weird things going on there" related to the use of almond meal as a price point thing (actually, it's almonds, not almond meal, for the crunchy bits), and I guess viewing it as some kind of moral failure that it doesn't give one the mental resilience of a "real fast". I have several patients who failed to correct their metabolic derangement on ketosis in spite of compliance (a couple due to SNPs on FTO re: increased insulin resistance with saturated fat), and for whom water fasting was too risky due to their diabetes and prediabetic reactive hypoglycemia. They all had significant reductions in inflammatory markers after three cycles of fasting mimicking, with robust maintenance of weight loss, waist circumference and biomarkers after returning to their normal diet. While Longo has financial interest in L-Nutra, profits are turned over to foundations. I'm not sure how tomato, squash and minestrone soups are "odd combinations of soups". "His own study" is "very biased"? How's that? Are you referring to Min Wei et.al. Sci Transl Med 2017? Yes, there are foods that will stimulate autophagy but in a statistically significant way not a clinically significant one. Eating chocolate while on a regular diet - no matter how healthy - is not going to give you any meaningful autophagy. Consuming leucine will immediately stop any autophagy. There is even doubt that 16/8 IF gives humans any at all.

I didn't find this review 'strangely not positive' at all. I thought he asked questions in a polite way that were genuine. I've understood that water fasting is actually more muscle sparing (depending on the length) than chronic low caloric intake diets. I've been led to believe that chronic low calorie diets lead the body to think there's not enough food and so it catabolizes muscle whereas a water fast leads the body to spare muscle in order to catch our food. I've never heard of people increasing their insulin resistance eating a higher fat and very low carb diet myself. I figure you know what you're talking about though since you've observed it in your patients. I would say that tomato soup is an odd soup to add since it's relatively high in plant toxins and some people who are sensitive to lectins, salicylates and oxalates. It does seem like they could've left out those...

I did this fast mimicking diet by Prolon (Valter Longo's firm) a few months ago and it did not convince me at all. Very expensive and the soups are so high carb that they kicked me out of ketosis all the time (and even tasted ugly!). So, I think I didn't have any autophagy at all. Also my body didn't show those great effects of rejuvination and fat loss I experienced with water fasting for two days.
Moreover is the downside: You always always think of eating: When can I eat the next small meal? Why so few today? Instead of just leaving food aside and concentrate on other things when water fasting.

After listening to a number of Dr Longo’s seminars I’m pretty sure part of the reason he came up with the mimicking fasting diet was to help ‘pacify’ all the oncologists who do not subscribe to fasting, as a form of treatment for cancer patients who are receiving chemotherapy. I really liked this video and yes a thumb up.
I think this video is more useful than most videos I have seen about FMD.
Let me crunch this already solid and compact video in few lines:
    1:51 Five day increments
2:20 On FMD you eat foods that activate less MTOR. Also foods that do not activate IGF-1 pathways.
2:35 Get the benefits of fasting without the stress on body.
3:25 Day one about 1000 kcal. For the remaining four days 725 kcal a day.
3:31 Low protein. Low carbohydrate. Moderately high fat.
4:13 You are mostly limiting the amount of protein you eat. By limiting protein you are limiting IGF signal.
4:22 Additionally, this puts you into a state of ketosis.
4:48 In essence it is a low protein keto diet for five days.
4:55 Downregulating IGF-1 also reduces glucose signaling.
5:05 This can also promote stem cell renewal.
5:35 Fasting mimicking food #1: black or green tea
    A tea advertisement here
6:38 Fasting mimicking food #2 nut bars
    6:40 macadamia nut butter
6:45 pulmonic acid, Omega-7 and fats
6:53 honey, why is it there?
7:00 Fructose can reduce some of the autophagic flux benefits we are after.
7:08 almond, why is it there?
    7:11 phytic acid content
7:13 macadamia is already there so why add almond?
7:17 probably a profit margin thing
7:31 Fasting mimicking food #3 algal oil
7:50 Fasting mimicking food #4 soup blends
7:53 Fasting mimicking food #5 dark chocolate crisp bar
    7:54 no sugar
    7:56 strong autophagy driver
8:25 Autophagy doesn't just happen because you are in a calorie deprived state
8:30 There are specific foods that you can eat to trigger autophagy
8:42 chocolate and green tea are great autophagy drivers
8:50 Fasting mimicking food #6 kale crackers
    8:52 low calorie keto thing
8:55 Fasting mimicking food #7 olives
    8:57 good fat source
    8:58 hydroxytirosol
9:00 Fasting mimicking food #8 glycerol drink
9:08 Glycerol drink is supposed to help drive up energy metabolism via glucogenesis
9:15 When you are in ketosis your body is utilizing different fuel substrates and using fats as fuel source
    9:23 glycerol backbone
9:50 By consuming glycerol you are artificially triggering AMPK pathway
10:07 A low protein temporary plant-based keto diet would get a lot of results even without Volter Longo's name
10:15 In mice the fast mimicking diet has been shown to reduce cancer
10:20 Prevent bone loss, trigger neurogenesis
10:23 Activate remyelination of new neurons
    10:29 Stem cell regeneration

Depends on your goals. Reducing protein in a fast mimicking diet can promote autophagy and reboot stem cells, boosting the immune system. A protein sparing modified fast does not turn off mTOR; it likely increases it to spare muscle while the body is put into a self-fat burning mode. This wouldn't reset the immune system in the same way or promote the same pathways. There are so many variations of fasting all geared toward meeting different goals.

Ive been fasting-mostly ADF-with carnivore eating for 14 weeks; lost 50 pounds. Recently did a 5 day water fast but did have to eat lettuce on day 4. All this to say I was skeptical of the FMD for the reasons Thomas outlines; I’d never eat those foods in the Prolon package. I did find diy foods and did those for a 3 day fast this week but haven’t lost weight whereas I always do with my water fasts so I can’t say if it works for weight loss. Thanks Thomas.

  • @MariaRodriguez-gc9jk

I agree that his goal is to make money. I heard one and half hour interview where he continually talked about the benefits of FMD, but never said what it was. I then realized, I would only learn about it after buying his program. That turned me off. This cancer issue is bringing immense profit for even the non pharma people.

You don't have to limit all protein to limit IFG signalling, since not all amino acids are equally implicated in IGF signalling. Limiting methionine and leucine would be one way of doing so, for instance.

One thing missing from Fat mimicking diet is the absolute rest and healing comes from not processing anything at all for several days of course that needs to be accompanied with the proper restart procedures and to re-populate to get with the good bacteria. So if you’ve been eating a lot of processed foods an actual fast might be the best way to start after going keto for a while and then maybe later on with FMD...

I kind of disagree with you about phytic acid. It turns out that beans and legumes are among the best dietary predictors of longevity. Phytic Acid gets a bad reputation as being an "anti-nutrient". However this is not a bug but rather a feature. If you want to eat a good cancer-fighting diet that supports colon health, you need to get important gut nutrients as deep in your intestinal tract as possible, and when phytic acid binds nutrients, what it is really doing is protecting these nutrients through more of the digestive process and thereby feeding our deep gut.
The whole "phytic acid is bad because it is an anti-nutrient" movement is one, I think, that a lot of people will regret later.

The lectins in all forms of seem are the most important thing to eliminate if you have any auto immune / leaky gut issue.
Traditionally legumes were eaten hulled and fermented so they could be better digested.

Ok, here's my take. Coming from a keto background, I thought it would be interesting to try out the Prolon 5 day FMD diet. Here's what happened: The morning before starting the 'fast', my ketones were 2.9. By the end of the 1st day, my ketones plummeted to 0.1!!! Now all the blah blah about the diet putting you in ketosis wasn't looking good. Even more shocking, by the day of day 5, my ketone were 0.0. Yes zero! I have never seen this value ever. I'm very disappointed and something in these soups seriously knocked me out of ketosis. Is there any study that shows people actually achieve ketosis (before and after values) or just hypothesis? Took me days to get my values back up via keto. As far as I'm concerned, this is just a low calorie vegan diet.

And also i see severel tea types in my local store with 2-4 calories in it per 100ml water. Are this safe to consume during a fast? Or would it be optimal to consume zero calories during a fast? Is it calories in all tea types? Or is herb tea perhaps calorie free? Am not doing it for the weight lose, but for all the other healt benefits

Thank you. Very informative! I would think this is great for detoxing and refresh as you say. Possibly also for losing weight, but you'd have to make sure you're not replacing the body fat you aim to metabolize during the fasting period with diet fat. In other words, if you eat too much fat, that food fat will get metabolized first and this will restrict any weight loss.

Please review the diets of the blue zone populations Dr Longo has worked so closely with and compare these centenarians and their diets to the keto lifestyle approach you espouse. There must be an equivalent to the blue zones for people who follow the keto lifestyle you promote, right? Oh wait… there’s not.
