Whelan didn't get the recognition he deserved while he was playing. The other Liverpool players knew how important he was to the team and they publicly stated this, but Whelan was never nominated for player of the year, while his central midfield partner Steve McMahon was. Whelan had excellent passing and shooting skills, knit together Liverpool's play and was very dependable. Regretably his club and international career petered out due to injury and he just faded away from both club and national squads.
Rubbish. Of course he got plenty recognition. Steve Highway was no different. They both straddled two different eras in their Liverpool careers. Steve from start of the 70s into the 80s & Ronnie 80s into the 90s. They all got plenty medals & that's the only recognition you need.
Cracking player. It was a nice touch by club skipper Alan Hansen: after missing most of the '88-'89 season through injury, he allowed Ronnie to collect the FA Cup, even though he returned to the side. Whelan had skippered the club magificently in Hansen's absence.
When I worked in McDonald's in Romford, east London, the guys would always ask me if I was related to the great man. Alas no. Inevitably, I was given the nickname "Ronnie". Thanks for posting🎉
Shows how good the Liverpool midfield was in the 80's. People like Case and Sheedy had to move on to get games. Ronnie managed a place somewhere in the MF all through into the 90's. He was competing with people like McMahon, Spackman, McDonald, Wark. Molby, Johnston, Houghton, Barnes and later on, Hutchison, Redknapp, McManaman and Michael Thomas...you can't keep those guys out of a side and not be useful...
Big Jack mee arse.the long ball king.just think of the players Ireland had between 88 & 94.& many of them playing at to clubs, clubs who were competent at the top level.& this is fact, bob paisley was overlooked for the ire job back then in favour of long ball jack
It's quite a test of memory looking back on Ronnie Whelan's Anfield career but when he started in the team as a youngster he really hit the ground running. Maybe it was his energy, and no doubt ability, coupled with the experience around him that made it such a good fit. I do recall he had to deal with injuries here and there, inevitable team changes and having to find his role in the team again. Despite the competition for places he still was a regular first team player and it's a Liverpool career to be proud of for sure, but part of me thinks it could have been even better, given the impact he made at such a young age.
Amaising player Ronnie Whelan... me parents house was in Finglas West, two blocks away from Paul Hewson... he never made it in Lfc 1 he went on doing other things.... 😁
What a player!!! Here’s a story. Pull up a chair. I was manning a border crossing point from Republic of Ireland/Northern Ireland about 90/91. I boarded a coach on its way into NI. A couple at the back of the coach must have heard my accent & shouted down,” are you a scouser?” I told them that I was. I got chatting & they were Whelans parents
It was in there. Loved it, too - the way Ronnie went for a left foot pass, and when the rebound came back he thought: "Sod it" and curled in a beauty with his so-called "weaker" right foot. Sheer quick-thinking confidence and skill.
Brilliant stuff. 95% British players. Before English football sold its soul. Absolutely despicable football is today. Especially liverpool. What a shithole.
I'm not a Liverpool fan,but Ronnie Whelan was worth his weight in gold, what a fantastic player, and so versatile, very underated,he was class.

Bob paisley , always said Ronnie Whelan was a diamond , i think he was more than that , incredible player , nothing fancy , just pure talent

Great Liverpool player, many happy memories from him
The two player's I used to dream of being as a lad were Alan Hansen and Ronnie Whelan , both pivotal players in that team.
The two united goals. Magic. Especially the semi final one
Ronnie Whelan The Great For Liverpool. Forever

A magnificent player for pool .... and at the end they treated him so badly.
Now if he was English he'd a captained England
Sadly, Liverpool FC don't have a creditable record when it comes to treating former heroes. Bill Shankly and Chris Lawler spring immediately to mind
He was past his best. A player should know when to move on
Most underrated player of all time ❤
Ronnie was Some player Big Jack didnt rate him or Liam Brady.Madness.
Tell me about. Just goes to show how things change. What would Eire do to have international class players like Ronnie Whelan today.
Big Jack didn't rate a midfield full stop. 4 centre halves, 4 full backs, a bean stalk and goal hanger.

We had Lawro Mgrath and O leary at cb at one stage but JC preferred Mick Mccarthy instead...pure madness
@@Dice69aooooww He did John, he scored the goal of the Tournament... Until Van Basten in the Final against the Russians.
As Graham souness said on 1 to 11 on sky.there was nothing ronnie Whelan couldn't do on a pitch

The Oggy v United was the best OG you'll ever see.
He was always on RTE.
Il Tardelli d'oltre manica !
They missed out the goal he scored against Man United in the 1983 league cup final.
No they didn't 😀
@@SK52UBL just watch it again, they did get it in. I must have nodded off.

Was Ronnie from Tallaght?
Men wore these jerseys with honour. Today it's just a pieces of kit.
When that stupid music starts I turn the video off
What a player he was, legend !

Not sure Ronnie would appreciate being called "British". Lol
