Leo Messi's genius is there to see, but until recently, Musa Okwonga struggled to see just how Iniesta was so magical on the pitch.

Man, I don't know how the Spanish consistently churn out so many class midfielders. It's fascinating to me how each European country has their 'famous position' - I.e. Italian defenders, Portuguese wingers, German goalkeepers etc.

This is similar to David Silva. David is our incognito agent without whom we'd never function the way we have all these years. Still is mostly not the given any awards or even the deserved recognition by both his fans & others alike. Earlier Yaya or Kun would snatch the headlines, now it's Kevin. But David is the most instrumental of all.
Good thing Iniesta is at Barca or people would've missed something big like they do with David.

Wow, this video is incredible. Absolutely beautiful stuff.
It reminds me of the first time I saw Iniesta in person. Barcelona v Levante in 2007. Ronaldinho was World Player of The Year. 19 year old Messi had just scored a hat-trick against Real Madrid, and that wonder goal against Getafe, and his greatness was beginning to be understood. But as my dad and I watched the game, it was clear that No. 24 (who my dad had never heard of before that game) was running the show. Not necessarily obvious on TV, but in person, watching him off the ball, and when he received it, it was clear that he was running the show - not Ronaldinho, Messi, Eto'o, or even Deco or Xavi.

More than 10 years ago I was telling my friends that Iniesta was almost as good as Messi, and better than Zidane, they all laughed at me. The description of Iniesta's genius in the above clip is a brilliant one, as it is indeed extremely difficult to explain to someone who has not watched him with extreme concentration what exactly it is that makes him so great. I still remember a La Liga game from 08/09 against Villarreal at the Camp Nou (3-3) in which Keita gave an immensely lousy ball to Iniesta, it was extremely overhit as well as way too high, yet Iniesta controlled it with some kind of karate move I will never understand. I still remember that play more than 10 years down the line, it was so inexplicable.

Of course they laughed at you because its not true. Zidane is still the better player overall. But Iniesta is in the same category of players like zizou, they are magicians on the pitch and they show us that statistics ain't the most important thing in football.
Its not a coincidence that barca gets raped in ucl every year since Iniesta and xavi quit. Even with messi on the pitch. They were more important than Messi. Yehp I always wondered how someone so brilliant can never get noticed but of course it took Pep's system for the English media to realise what Scholes does for the the team is nothing short of genius. He was always better than Gerrard and Lampard they too were undoubtedly world class. However, scholes was class and elegance not statistical megaheads like Gerrard or Lampard but beautiful to watch and was just so naturally gifted as well and technically better. It's not a shame he played in England he had a fantastic career with one the greatest clubs of all time and he made them tick. It's more of a shame that the minds of the British don't realise how great it is to sometimes be simple yet effective. I will never put Scholes in the same bracket as Gerrard and Lampard he should be with the bracket of Xavi, Pirlo, Iniesta and so on.

United were able to play a 442 which was a 2-2-6 in reality for so long because scholes would pick up the ball no matter the pressure and recycle it so effectively. Dude, you gave me goosebumps as you described Andres Iniesta (Don). Hoping to find myself, to see him in person just one time either playing or just in front of my eyes. He truly is a master class just as how Xavi was and Messi is, they are the reason a young boy who learns about football fall in love with the game and the team. Seeing their dedication and loyalty towards Football Club Barcelona makes one wonder how such great players were never moved by money but stayed to see their retirement in a club as such.

My personal favourite player. Iniesta is a joy to watch when on the pitch, so elegant, such control, being able to get out of any situation with the ball under his control no matter how tight it is and no matter how many players are closing him down. Great vid!

The most underrated world class player, absolute genius on the ball, humble off the pitch, has won everything, and I will never forget that run against PSG, where he left 3 players on the floor and passed the ball literally through the middle for an empty net goal by Neymar - minimalist in touches, but he makes every single movement absolutely worth it!

I watched Barcelona live in the flesh probably the same year as this guy and could've almost said the same thing, he and Messi dominated the field, making Neymar look like a showpony and Suarez look like a tap in scorer. Iniesta got an assist i think, he and Messi both went on crazy dribbles but that personally wasn't the stand out moment. For me the stand out moment of Iniesta in that match was the way he made a fake run for Pique, knowing that he wouldn't get the ball and without even checking his shoulder and then watching Messi drop into the space created by him and assist a goal. Iniesta didn't even touch the ball but without him that goal wouldn't have been scored. 2009/10 Barcelona will never be beaten, Iniesta, Pique and Messi are the last of that team and the level of communication that was still present between them three was sublime, I've seen Ronaldo, Adama Traore, Salah, Coutinho, Mane, Rooney and Tevez play live but nothing compares to Messi and Iniesta. I walked into that game wanting to see Neymar flick it over someones head and Messi score a free kick and left the game flabbergasted at the dribbling and intelligence of Messi and Andres, Legends.

He was better than Xavi. Xavi could find the pass but he didn’t have the silk that iniesta had that made him effective going forward and in tight situations.

Iniesta is a genius with an extremely sharp intuition. He reads the game and every player supremely well. This is why you can never floor him. He eludes you before you even attempt a move towards him. How often have you seen him on the grass? He belongs to one of my top 2.

Iniesta only scores the most important goals because he comes out and realizes if I have supported the whole team to score and nobody could then I must. This is the difference from Messi who is a genius of everything but because he’s not a natura midfielder he doesn’t control the pace of the game as much, Messi is still very good at this but he always wants to speed it up too quickly often it works though because his passes are perfect. What Messi lacks is that feeling of well if no one else can then I will, because usually he’s making so many of the shots already that the “if nobody else can” is usually already 90% him. This is why Iniesta is Spain’s most important player ever and Messi isn’t Argentina’s, aside from the huge gap in talent across the team. Messi is still the best player of all time, I’m just explaining the nuance between them

During the last season in the match between espanyol and barca the entire pitch was flooded with water due to rain. The ball could hardly be passed on the ground and dribbling with the ball was near impossible, even messi couldn't move with the ball but iniesta did. He excellent in that match he glided above the water with the ball, it was amazing to watch.

I whatch old soccer games, as old and as many as I can find. I have seen all the great dribblers of the past like Rivelino, Zico, Elkjaer, Littbarski, Laudrup brothers, Zola, Ortega, Florian Albert and less known players like Emmerich, Libuda, Held. But none, no one does it with the same ease and grace as Iniesta and no one needs so little space and such small touches to beat multiple defenders. Sure Iniesta had so many quite games, but when his teammates needed him the most he won the games by himself - Spain vs Chile, Spain vs Holland, Barca vs Chelsea and so on. The best dribbler of all time in my opinion and one of the most successful players in history for sure.

The one time I went to the Nou Camp I got to watch them all before kick off. In the match, I was stunned by Iniesta. Just impeccable control of the ball. As Mourinho said in his scout report for Andres, he had an incredible radius of action. From that day on he's been my favourite ever footballer. Just the technique and composure, plus that little burst of speed he had. Just magic. I am grateful to have seen that man play

This video reminded me of a few years back when a relatively “poor” team (I don’t remember who) managed a 0-0 draw against Barcelona. When they asked the manager how he stopped Messi he said it was impossible to stop him and that what they did was focus on neutralizing Xavi and Iniesta.

Invests made the bar a system work.
He linked the defence to the midfield and the midfield to the strikers as well as getting wide and beyond the strikers.
Iniesta was the barca ststem-it was predicated on his play making.
Messi was the first violin but iniesta conducted the orchestra.

Iniesta, Xavi, Zidane - probably the finest 3 midfielders I've ever seen. They're all different types of players but the similarity is the ability to receive the ball in any situation, be comfortable with it and the make the right decision every time. That's what allows you to turn the possession into an attack, by drawing the opponents midfielders while always retaining possession.
