My first ever bus journey from BKK to Chiang Mai was in 1972, No air con. Because it broke 10 mins after departure, No reclining seats. The driver had a shot gun on display. Mobile phones hadn’t been invented. As for a rest room on the bus! You can only imagine where we stopped! - Oh boy this is pure luxury!
I took a "VIP" bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok in 2003. Air con broke down about an hour into the trip, no open windows, then we got in an accident with an elderly man driving a pickup truck, then the lady in the seat across from me found out the bag of rambutans she brought on the bus was full of red ants, and they were swarming her. Fortunately only her. Not the most pleasant trip.
This is actually a great idea. First, you save one night at a hotel, and second you save the hastle of going through airport security checkpoints. I would love to go on a first class overnight bus from CM to BKK!

If you happen to travel again by bus in Thailand, I recommend Sombat Tour company which is the one in the video. They have great services and a comfy ride.

Based on my experience, I think Thailand got the MOST luxurious buses in the entire world.
No Malaysia is better. We have even better ones than these.
And very cheap too.
For the Thai people $23 is cheap (823 Baht) but I think this is worth it and it’s luxurious for me,Love from Thailand 🇹🇭

You haven't been on many buses if you believe that. And the driving standards are appalling. Accidents with buses often off the main roads

Come a long way from the buses that plied that route the last time I was there. They weren’t that uncomfortable considering it was so long ago but that bus looked like it’s from another planet let alone another era. Good to see the improvement in the transport hasn’t been matched by a massive increase in the fares either.

In Thailand have two biggest bus route, Northern-Eastern, and Sountern. For The North-East route, it has many bus company competitive. That causes service and cost to improve year by year. In the opposite for Southern route. Not more than 2 companies running. The service is very very poor, the price is expensive. People prefer low-cost airlines for southern travel.

I recommend sleeper train for that route--done it--very comfortable and safer than highway travel.
And the air-conditioning on those buses can be ridiculously cold, even around December, when it can get quite cold up in CM. Yep, Thai trains are the go.

The bus has double axle at the back (8 wheel), that makes it very stable, comfortable and less shaky.
No it has 6 wheels at the back the rear axle steers,

You haven't tried sleeping bus in Vietnam, have you? When I have to make a long distance journey, I refer to sleep until either the plane, train or bus arriving at the destination.
This is what i call "VIP Bus". This is a TRUE VIP bus.

Lucky to get there the way they drive I've had driver's fall sleep when I've been traveling there
Totally agree. It's no so much about the comfort of the journey but reaching the destination safely. While they do have 2 drivers in rotation, many of the drivers took stimulants in order to keep awake during long journeys. Is sad for the drivers who are not paid much so I always tell my friends who travel by this mode to tip the drivers.

I remember years ago, we traveled from Sukhothai to BKK on a "luxury" air-con bus. It had a toilet. You could take a dump if you needed to. When you lift the lid and look down, you could see the road. SPLAT! 💩🤣

@HahThatsWhatSheSaid I know. I read about an incident where workers on the railroad tracks in Thailand would sometimes get splattered as the train passed by. I'd want to stand a long way back from the tracks when a train passes by, just in case.

When I have to make a long distance journey, I refer to sleep until either the plane, train or bus arriving at the destination. That is the reason that I refer Vietnam's sleeping buses.

The overnight sleeper train is cheaper and you get your own room and bed.
Was just about to post the same thing. The sleeper train is amazing. First class is such great value. An air-conditioned waiting room, dinner and breakfast and your own private compartment with a plug socket, bed and aircon.
flying is cheaper, and also you get there in 40min
I would be happy with either, and either for me would be preferable to flying.
I would also be nice if they can build a sleeper train going to Phuket.

Nathan Or, the advantage of a Bus ride may be, that the bus stops only once, for the food stop. You get onto the bus, close your eyes and sleep.
1st class sleep train is now B.1,253 - 1,653
there has no food cabin anymore but some trains have frozen food to sell and they will heat it up for u.

I lived, and worked, in Thailand, and the comments about road safety are very valid. Drivers spent too many hours at the wheel, falling asleep, with devastating results.
Distance exceeds 400 km, there must be 2 drivers to change drivers, and if driving for 4 hours, must stop 30 minutes before continuing the journey
