    jees I was screwing with that pinion shaft on my rebuild hitting it from the left. no wonder it wouldn't come out. I purchased a slide hammer kit just for my rebuild and I'm glad I did. one or two hits and those end caps come right off. I'm basically replacing all the bearings, seals and shafts in mine.

    You might also try getting a socket large enought to fit over the plug and go against the housing, then take a longer bolt to go throught the socket and screw into the plug. Kinda like a bearing puller.

    If you are referring to the pinion shaft plugs, did you put the bolt back in and try to tighten the bolt to see if the plug will twist. If you did that and it did not work you could try cleaning the out side of the right hand plug and lightly driving it into the housing to loosen the left side. If it comes out along with the pinion shaft take a long rod and drive the right side out. I would use the pipe wrench next if needed. Hope this helps.

    the brass gears in trans and rear axle are made that way, they look worn but most are not

    The correct way is to make a slide hammer puller from threaded rod and a sliding weight. It works SO EASILY!

    Im guessing mtd doesnt honor troybuilt's lifetime warranty. I have a friend with a horse tiller and in the 80's it was completely thrashed with probably over 1000 hrs on it. Burning oil, worn gears, gear oil leaking all over. He took it to troy ny and it came back with a new motor and trans rebuilt. It was like a new unit and it didnt cost him a penny. Nobody does business like that any more.

    Mine won't move, period. I removed the roll pin on both sides, both are stuck real good. I hit it with a small hammer on all sides and it still won't budge, neither one. I can't twist mine like yours do so I may have to persuade it with a pipe wrench. Any thoughts on how to get them out?

    I can't find where to purchase parts, and mtd tells me I'm giving them the wrong serial numbers. any advice for me? mines a 1972 horse

    Yeah right. I'm sure all the "turbine doctors" at Pratt and Whitney would leave all the grease/caked on dirt on the gearcase during a "rebuild" and would work on their knees on a filthy garage floor instead of clean steel bench. "Turbinedoctor"...Are you sure you're not a "turban" doctor instead? Shouldn't you be wearing a turban when doing your professional youtube video of how not to repair a simple transmission? Love your "videotography" btw...priceless!
