The existing bosphorus is not wide enough to allow safely traffic in both directions at the same time for large ships. They have to use it as a one way, half day in one direction, and half day in the other direction. The parallel canal will allow continuous one way traffic while the bosphorus will do the opposite direction. Therefore, that will improve traffic safety and minimize waiting idle time. Minimizing idle time is good for the environment.

In the first place, any major improvement in international maritime commerce is very positive for a variety of good reasons. Faster and safer water transport through difficult land bodies is positive in and of itself. Increased growth in worldwide economic progress demands the best of commercial communication and transport. Every major country should work to improve its own competitive position and enhancement of commercial and social benefits. I believe that a rising tide provides the opportunity for all of humanities 'boats' to benefit in a most positive manner. Therefore, I concur with Turkey's project plans and hope for the most positive outcome for all stakeholders. Thanks for this program. Bill K.

    • @bassmouter4694

@user-xp4of2vu4r, faster and safer water transport with a huge price will only used by very important transports. To continue a global war between Turkey and Russian Federation. It was impossible that the Bosporus could be locked by a single accident with a ship, it’s never been like the Panama Canal or the Suez Canal.
Turkey has to borrow the money from the international finance market against a high interest. The inflation worldwide is rising, the rent will be at least 4%, resulting in a doubling of the loan each twenty years.
Since Erdogan came to power has he used cronyism to ensure that each development from the infrastructure from Turkey is embedded in a return on invest of 200% during the coming 100 years to his clan.
Take for instance Spain, they had those troubles 14 years ago when Italian investors covered all the desert Lands with sunpannels to gain electricity. They got such a profitable deal of the clan at Madrid, that all revenues from the entire country were not enough to keep the economy of Spain floating. The government decided after advice of the IMF to quit this system en bloc, and many retirement foundation went bankrupt. But it saved the future of Spain.
The same solution is necessary for Turkey.

Dardanelles is wider and straighter than Bosphorus, although there is one narrow kink in the waterway. The minimum width of Bosphorus is 750 m, the minimum width of Dardanelles is 1.2 km. Also, whereas Bosphorus cuts right through the centre of Istanbul, there are no great cities on the shores of Dardanelles.

    • @EkEMaN91
      @EkEMaN91 5 місяців тому

Montreux is not a constraint for Turkey. The convention gives Turkey a lot of leeway in regards to military ships with Turkey only obliged to allow civilian ships through which it is doubtful they're concerned with. Turkey has allowed (US) military ships through in the past with the argument that they didn't carry large enough main guns to fall under the convention, which would mean every modern warship doesn't qualify for the restrictions in the agreement. Similarly it is Turkey's decision what the qualify as a war and the restrictions can be lifted by turkey if they feel a war threatens their interests in a similarly loosely defined way.
The purpose of the new channel is to move the heavy industry out of the tourism-heavy Istanbul and place a passage that can be expanded without destroying portions of the historically important city and to place a canal that eliminates having to pass through two straits towards the Black Sea and the congestion that brings.

Firstly, this is a purely Turkish affair. In addition, the old bottlenecks are no longer suitable for the high frequencies, huge ships and their dangerous loads. An accident in the Bosporus would bring the megacity of Istanbul into the greatest calamities. Conclusion: This structure makes sense and will bring Turkey into a new economic situation. who can have anything against it? Only those who want to oppose it for strategic reasons (USA?)

What do you know about it? First of all canal will not be happening because erdogan dictatorship is about to end. Canal will be only 20 mt deep at the depest point most of the canal will be only 12 mt deep. it is not suitable for big cargo ships. Canal is America's dream for last 70 years because of the Montreux convention. Black sea is the only sea that America cannot base a naval fleet. That's why it's the most peaceful sea on the planet. By the convention foreign countries cannot pass their navy ships trough the Bosphorus straight if the ships above certain tonnage, with certain weapons and cannot stay in the Black sea more than 21 days.

A Ford Class carrier is made to fit through the Panama canal, which has become a sort of maximum size rule of thumb for transport ship sizes as you'd want it to be able to travel through it. This has made it into a de facto minimum size for other passages as well, as you don't want to make a passage that most international freighters are unable to traverse.

It should be clear to see that Turkey was encouraged & probably helped to undertake this project in order to be a partner in BRICS+. As many BRICS+ members are developing canals like this all over the world to thwart US-NATO from blocking strategic shipping routes such as the Malaca Straits, (Thailand canal), the Panama canal alternatives include a southern and Northern canal system through South America and a canal through Mexico. Afgahanistan is building a massive canal that was started many years ago and has been restarted with the encouragement and aid of Russia. all these canals combined are probaly costing less than NATO costs in the Ukraine conflict, but will reap benefits for all concerned for at least a century. showing the difference between the Western Approach to acquiring short term gains for a few corporations & Oligarchs, at horrendous costs for all concerned and the BRICS+ approach of undertaking huge projects that will reap massive benefits for the long term, for all concerned.

40,000 ships a yr Canal takes 4,400. So it ain't about capacity.
    Follow the money
Turkey can deny military ship access to old waterway leaving only the new canal & can then change literally anything they want of US EU other warships. Russia of course can bring in warships via its rivers & canals as it's done during war.
At the same time this is Russia prime oil access to markets. Otherwise it's the North Sea which is at the least problematic in winter. So Turkey can charge vast $ by simply saying hazardous ships banned from heavily populated old passage.
Turkey can also rig the prioritization of ships using old way. Got a Chinese ship w 20,000 containers, tell them wait a month or pay up. At Panama canal there's an auction daily for limited skip the line spots. If you have a car carrier 5 million on a 70 million cargo & having ship tied up a month is a reasonable fee & 20x the standard cost.
    So KA CHING Turkey

Türkiye no longer carries out big projects. Instead, it carries out medium and small-scale projects. Additionally, many planned public investments were stopped due to the economic crisis. I think these are the wrong choices. If investments stop, the economy will get worse. Anyway, when it comes to the Canal Istanbul Project, money is needed to do it. And just money is not enough, there must be political power. To prevail over the opposition inside and outside. Most people think that the Canal will harm Istanbul. I think the Canal should be built, but only after all the risks are calculated. If the canal is built, trade can grow several times, and Istanbul can grow 3 times. This is a good thing. Agricultural land in the region creates little added value. But if the canal is built, a lot of money will be earned from maritime trade and shipping services. And there will be new places to visit. There is already a lot of agricultural land in Anatolia and Thrace. As for water loss, it is a problem that can be solved with new pipelines and savings investments. There is also the tunnel problem. It is said that there are tunnels reaching Istanbul from the area where the Canal is located. Also, is the soil durable enough to retain water?
If it is deemed appropriate as a result of the reports, I am in favor of doing it. There are more than 10 such projects in the world. I hope all channel projects are realized. Canals are new highways.
I also dream of the Van Bridge in my country. This will connect Van and the Northern provinces via the Lake. It will reduce the distance by 2 times.

Turkey is joining BRICS and is likely to leave NATO so the US and NATO shipping will not benefit. Russia and China already have a route via the Caspian Sea to Iran and onto India and Africa that by passes Turkey for exports of grain that is faster and so cheaper than shipping and they are planning oil and gas lines via the same route.

Any competition to the Suez would be a very good thing for a number of reasons. I'm sure Egypt would not agree with that, but to bad.

Yeah, that idea is great but the Black Sea doesn't have the traffic that the Suez Canal has.

They are building it to their own good. Not to rival the Suez and Panama canals. Please respect other people's intentions and don't add your own interpretations to their works.

Every few years people talk about how they're going to build a new canal to take away from the Suez. It sounds great. Shit. It would even be awesome for every party involved. But the reality is, the amount of people it takes to build. Something like this is calculated in hundreds and hundreds of deaths. There's a reason why all these countries use pows to build rail lines and dig mega projects. Just ask the people of Russia who built the canal for Stalin, and then it turns out the canal was like 5 ft too shallow....... All this sounds great but the reality is it's not simple

    Not a Good Idea.
    Disapproved!
Better construct another Tall Suspension Bridge to get with the Traffic across the Canal.
    25 Billion Dollars is Insane!
Better get with the High Speed Rail Project with the Undersea Tunnel Project.
    Better get with Airports.
    Better get with Utilities.
    Better get with Underground Electrification.
Better get with Water Treatment Plants.

It will be a PPP project. That means that the government will not pay a dime for this construction. Private companies will built it- operate it- pay taxes- maintained it- and transfer it free of charge to the government after 15 years of operation.
When this canal is built the government will say to the ships using the Bosporus strait that they will have to wait and limit the amount of ship passing. No ship would want to wait even if it is free so they will take this new route

The canal will be done. People who are against it are all people who have voted for a mayor who was on holiday during an earthquake, used the municipality’s equipment for personal preferences, and builds cash money towers to buy personal and political related stuff. Being stupid, acting stupid and shouting that its good to be stupid is a common thing whitin the opposition. Think about it, an opposition mayor said he would do absolutely nothing if he was going to be elected, he presented no project, had no vision, said he would sit on his chair for the duration of his tenure and guess what, he got elected just to sting people who are willing to work! This happened in an suburb of Ankara, who already had a mayor linked to the opposition. And guess what, since he was elected 6 years ago everytime when it rains the streets turns into rivers, people litterally die but yet these woke people still applaud and chant their name whenever possible. Stupidity is a real thing in Turkiye, letting underaged kids drink beer is according to the opposition, who try to cancel this canal, modernity. Underaged kids have tattoo’s in Turkiye and its all because of this redicilous opposition, because they name it freedom.
