Also, whereas Bosphorus cuts right through the centre of Istanbul, there are no great cities on the shores of Dardanelles.
Montreux is not a constraint for Turkey. The convention gives Turkey a lot of leeway in regards to military ships with Turkey only obliged to allow civilian ships through which it is doubtful they're concerned with. i've seen for different places where they are planning to build canals in the Middle East, but they will never talk about the one that they've been planning to build through Gaza for years now.
Why would they want to build a canal through Gaza? Israel has a major ports all along it's coastline including large cities like Haifa. It would be like the Israelis deciding to construct their new Parliament in Gaza.

Turkey is joining BRICS and is likely to leave NATO so the US and NATO shipping will not benefit. Russia and China already have a route via the Caspian Sea to Iran and onto India and Africa that by passes Turkey for exports of grain that is faster and so cheaper than shipping and they are planning oil and gas lines via the same route.

Every few years people talk about how they're going to build a new canal to take away from the Suez. It sounds great. Shit. It would even be awesome for every party involved. It will be a PPP project. That means that the government will not pay a dime for this construction. Private companies will built it- operate it- pay taxes- maintained it- and transfer it free of charge to the government after 15 years of operation.
When this canal is built the government will say to the ships using the Bosporus strait that they will have to wait and limit the amount of ship passing. No ship would want to wait even if it is free so they will take this new route
