- How to quickly age the near-white maple necks on Squier and other inexpensive guitars to make them look old! No need to remove the old finish! (links below):
I mentioned "DK guitars" in the video. I meant "Big D" guitars. Sorry about that!
Minwax Spar Urethane Satin Finish: amzn.to/3pES33n
Angelus Leather Dye (Brandy Color): amzn.to/2MfFqNR
Red Devil Steel Wool Pads: amzn.to/2KSQXm2
Skil Corded Jig Saw: amzn.to/3o2z96e
Isopropyl Alcohol 99%: amzn.to/2X5eO4t
Indio Retro Classic Tele-Type Electric Guitar: amzn.to/3hynKIW
Glarry GTL Tele-Type Electric Guitar: amzn.to/3b1hqZ6
Squier Bullet Telecaster: amzn.to/3aauDP6
Squier Telecaster Affinity Series: amzn.to/3mj4dNB
Here's something I forgot to mention in the video: If you don't want to remove your headstock decal, I believe you can still use this method. You are only scuffing up the poly finish, not removing it. You should be able to scuff up the finish over the whole neck with steel wool, including over the decal. The Angelus dye would then be applied over the entire neck, including the decal, I can't see why you would have different results this way. But, be sure to spray at least two coats of poly over the entire neck after dyeing it.
Your dark finish one looks amazing and at some point in the future I’ll use that to have my very own flame maple neck
Thanks, I was looking for a way to age my fender neck without destroying the headstock logo. This worked perfectly.
hi... How do sand the front of a PRS SE headstock without removing Pauls Signature? I would like it to tint it...
Exposure to sunlight sorts pale new Squier necks and also stark white pickguards.
I literally learned 5 things from this vid..thanks man..rock on🤘
Thanks for posting this, i just aged a squire neck using your method, the Angelas Brandy color mixed 50/50 with alcohol is on point for that vintage yellow
Great, glad it worked for you. At that point, I sprayed on Minwax Urethane Satin Spar, at least three coats, rubbing LIGHTLY with 000 steel wool between coats. Neck is like new, and incredibly slick.
I find that a few coats of spar urethane by itself gives a maple neck a nice, natural looking amber tint. Even regular, oil-based Minwax polyurethane imparts a bit of yellowing to the wood, but not as much as spar.
This guy is legend.
Could you do this without removing the neck or frets?
Thank you for the great video, I'll have to get some of that Brandy colored leather dye. I like what you did with the Indio headstock, I like rounding off that beak as well. I been contemplating what to do with the two Glarry headstocks I have, you did a great job on yours. 👍👍👍👍👍
If you wanted to darken rosewood a little, could you just skip the tape and do the whole thing in one swoop?
I like the darker shade of the Tele neck you decided against using. What color dye did you use?
What about the the maple fingerboard on the Indio ?
i agree they're too light even on fender players. i got some dye or stain from crimson guitars in england and i also went too dark on my project it needs watering down a lot .
Would this work OVER decals if you went light with the steel wool?
I want to tint my neck but don't want to remove the logos or serial.
yes it should as long as you dont sand through the decals, use light pressure.
this is exactly what i want to do - the problem is here in the uk, anything like dye, lacquer etc costs a small fortune. gonna have to bite the bullet
So you’re saying I don’t neet to sand of the polyurethane to stain the wood?
The best way is to use UV light, this will actually age the wood the same way they naturally age, I used a UV fly zapper thing, give it 3-4 days under the light, longer if needed and then just use mineral oil to get rid of the dryness, later clean with lemon oil on the frets, it will look and actually be like a real vintage guitar (knocks and scratches are optional)
do you have any suggestions on how to do this with a neck that has tung oil finish ?
what's wrong with Tung oil?
Hello. Can I use minwax paste finishing wax?
How did you do the fretboard, did you have to sand it down too before staining?
VERY light rub with 000 steel wool.
The brandy color on there website looks more of a dark reddish color. Is that the same one you used?
I too have the Indio Retro Classic sunburst tele..and I too do not like the headstock hook,so I will be cutting it to my desired look,as you did. I also don't like the white poplar neck on my indio.so.i might try a few parts of your method to age mine. Make the neck look like it belongs to the sunburst more.nice video.
The hook is extremely easy to remove with a $20 jig saw and some sandpaper.
The expensive spray guitar lacquer is from Athens, Ohio. Guess who?
What is StewMac
That’s interesting
Cause it sounds opposite of vintage
They had to put lacquer on the headstocks after fender changed to poly necks, so the decals wouldnt get ruined by the poly?
I guess decals are made for poly nowadays?
Have not noticed any degradation using poly.
2:51 tutorial starts
Have a heavy smoker borrow the guitar for a couple weeks
WAYYYY too complicated.
Just sand w/150 then finish sand w/300. Then light coat of wood stain poly (Varithane at Home Depot). let dry. then sand with steel wool.
simple
2 hours max

How do you sand the fretboard or don't you need to, I'm ready to stain a neck and wonder if you need to sand the fretboard too,it's a brand new light neck from an Indio strat.
I just went over it **VERY LIGHTLY** with 000 steel wool.
I'm wondering myself, but I do know there is some coating on the neck, and on the strats maple fretboard too, not just the back of it,you have to sand it all off first, since I have a monoprice Tele with a rosewood fretboard, I'm just going to sand down the back of the neck, and the headstock, after I reshape the neck,I seen a couple of videos, and one said you have to sand them down, really good before staining, all the way to the bare wood or it won't take, and yes you have to sand down the fretboard too,as close as you can to the fret markers, before applying stain or linseed oil,I'm going to try the two coats of linseed oil, because I'm trying to match the look of a vintage maple fretboard on the strat, even if I have to repaint the fret markers, fun project.
I must be really old. Just like buying jeans with holes and rips, I see zero reason to do this. Your guitar will age naturally with time and use. Just spend more time just playing the damn thing.
Settle down jr
No, it won’t. That’s why professional guitarists that don’t play vintage guitars show little to no wear and tear even after 10,000+ hours. The coating on modern guitars is basically a protective coating that keeps the guitar looking new. Also, I don’t know why I am even responding seeing as I am sure to get an ignorant response. 🤷♂️ 😂
To much work
No, Thank You
Its like listening to crazy person that doesn't understand what he's doing... and then you realize your listening to a crazy person that doesn't understand what their doing. If your interested in finishing your own guitar... scroll passed this video... its total 💩 🍦
This is useless to me. I was actually looking for something that improved the performance of the instrument. Not a cosmetic.🍓🍓🍓
