  • The sad and slow evolution of female representation in #Bollywood action movies is alarming to see but nonetheless projects like #Dhaakad are a refreshing change in a landscape mostly dominated by men. Do you think the #kanganaranaut starrer will fare well at the box office or is this a relatively new and niche concept. I hope you like the Dhaakad Trailer Review & Analysis

I was shocked when she answered the question asked by Rajeev without thinking for a minute. It's so spontaneous.I must say she is intellectual. She should be appreciated and recognized for her work despite having different political ideologies. She is always vocal about unfair treatment to actress in the film industry. Hoping, this movie will be able to enlighten the audience who are thinking that the action genre movies belong to male actors.

I honestly don't have a problem with strong female characters avenging or having a traumatic experience in the past. They can also act as a motive for our lead to do what they do but the point is they should be well made and structured and not be one dimensional. The point is that they should be well written and nicely portrayed. Avenging and traumatic experiences are in male lead action films too.

The problem was that the trauma used to be rape only that too shot as per to sensationalise than to sensitise. For example, insaaf ka taraju is known for the rape scene but for the message that hd to b delivered. Who knows the director wanted to cash in that forget about the message. And that reflected in the mindset of ppl of those times who had no emotional investment in the trauma of the lead but were more interested for such scenes.

"Women are independent gags, that are as forgetful as Gajini's memory."
Exactly! That's what was always on my mind while watching movies, no regard to the language or genre. Female characters are mostly there just to build up the male characters, and its disappointing. Our country have witnessed so great women warriors, intellectuals etc and their stories of courage, strength, confidence. But, the character portrayal on mass media is just opposite. Few exceptions are always present but that's just not enough.
I just completely loved Devsena character in Bahubali series, she was confident, dignified, witty and very strong character. So I expected something like that in RRR too but it didn't happened.
Even though, its not necessarily have to be a big-budget action but other genres too, should have impactful female characters.

@Drithi True, but if it was actually needed for the story, then it would've been alright. I also felt that Tamannah's character didn't have much arc. At first she was so awesome, but after meeting the male character all the heavylifting was transferred to him and in second part, there were just few glimpses of her. That's it.
      Its kind of absurd!

I COMPLETELY AGREE !! Simply portraying women in strong roles that only are linked with a social message and/or biographies is not the progress we thrive for. It's honestly exhausting seeing Bollywood treat female-led movies like a mere "chance" given to the actors, if directors started looking beyond gender we could've ALREADY had fantastic female-led action movies by now like there's a reason why kill bill is still such an iconic movie or even characters like Black widow and Lara Croft. Women do not have to be the lead all the time either but neither should they be portraying roles that do not contribute anything to the plot or story, but an opportunity to incorporate another song. We do see change occurring but not enough.

My honest and the biggest pet peeve with female action genre is that somehow that there is either a forced social messaging or that women have to adopt alpha masculine traits in order to be taken seriously and somehow being feminine is thrown out of the window. They were simply badass women in their own right. I guess Gangubai kinda wanted to do that but the subject matter of the movie was too dark and gritty. Like you rightly pointed out its either the love interest role or have endured some kinda tragedy or it becomes male bashing I dont need a man kinda vibe. That needs to change. Actresses will continue to accept such roles so that they don't lose market or fade away.
The problem is the directors and producers who want to produce commercial movies and they are purely male oriented.
Women directors like Zoya Akhtar has done a great job in dil dhadakne do by using Priyanka in a beautiful and strong way.
Many female oriented shows aren't commercially viable according to the Market forces but with the raise of OTT we can see more of female oriented shows.
There are various examples where female characters have changed the Stories ex.mirzapur, aarya, dasvi and lots more.

The main differences between Hollywood and Indian movies-
    1) Role of women in the film.
Women in Hollywood movies are so bold, active, strong and particularly they are *independent* . In Indian movies women are more passive, they give more importance to emotions like love, revenge etc and most of indian heroines can make up a good lover, housewife, mother, daughter etc. They are also said to protect/practice indian values and traditions.
    2) Hollywood movies give more focus to science and technology in their films whereas indian films give more importance to Supernatural( I mean ghosts, divine power, love) elements.

We hate bollywood but don't talk about South, they have more problematic scenes but we don't have any problem

if you look at Malayalam industry lets say 10-15 years earlier, it had male dominated characters, audience wanted to see it and cheered for it. They also had item dance and lot of misogynist characters played by male leads too. What changed was directors, script writer and actors where willing( convinced ) to experiment with character that are relatable, which impacted movie goers and hence in last couple of years you can see that movies had flavors of realism into it. Bollywood industry in past few years have tried to bring such changes and can see some incredible writers willing to pen something that is different from main stream story line. Like a great man once said "Roman wasn't build in a day", a slow yet steady change is what is needed. The likes of Manoj Bajpayee, Raj kumar Rao, nawazuddin siddiqui, pankaj tripathi are doing fantastic and I have no doubt in my mind that these actors are willing to experiment with bold and different characters and hopeful for Bollywood to shine.

One thing to consider here is that there is indeed a gradual shift in sensibilities in Hindi cinema for sure, in that that once upon a time, the age 30 was considered a deadline for female actors while male stars could continue playing college boys well into their 40s and 50s. Rani and Preity who once ruled the roost during the late 90s to late 2000s, started fading away once they turned 30. But today we can see stars like Katrina, Deepika, Kangana bagging lead roles even in their mid to late 30s and they have indeed been able to combat their aging process in the same way as male stars do. That's something to be celebrated.

  • @OM.14
    @OM.14 2 роки тому +24

Honestly, actresses don't even need a female led movie to show their acting skills, they just need to stop taking eye candy roles. Biggest example being PC in Bajirao Mastani, she stole the show in a movie that had two other A listers. Actresses like Kajol, Rani, Karishma, Kareena, Sushmita, etc, worked in movies (of 90s) alongside male superstars but still made a mark.

    • @bela_52
      @bela_52 2 роки тому +2

Writers need to make well written female characters in male-led movies too. One good example is Gully Boy. Every character was well written. Even though Alia wasn’t the lead and only had a supporting role, the Safeena character was really well thought out and well written and her acting was really good so she was memorable in the movie.

This was a good take, i had almost forgotten that bollywood once had strong female characters ,that too in those olderrr movies, back when such ideas were not the focus as it is now,(courtesy feminism). Some good movies were made, with female leads supporting each other in a way that wasn't forced and came natural to uplift the standards of women in film(bollywood),even with male leads/support.
It has been a long time coming, for bollywood to "Up" its standard of movie making/story telling. I think, most of the movies that do end up being made for reals, don't even have a script that has any women in a pivotal role; so without a script that demands one or more actual female lead/supporting actresses, what would the actresses even do, except be pretty and alluring, so if they get exposure, maybe.. Maybe they get better roles next time from some better director/producer.., sadly enough in this pursuit of getting eyeballs, they get type casted into item roles. And lord knows, how easy it is to get type casted, even with 1 role. Not just for females but even for male actors.
This recent fall of bollywood movies in comparison to other woods ,has been a welcoming change ,i believe. For this will propel producers/directors to seek stories that are worth filming from writers who have a well written script, that stays with us even after a week, lol. Unlike some movies that are just in it for a weeks collection ;) .
Its not like bollywood doesn't make good movies, but even if they are made, a lot of them end up failing, which in itself is a deterrent to making movies as an art form and not just commercial business. I hope this forces the bollywood to turn a new leaf in terms of making movies that matter.
We have seen how some actors choose their films carefully, even new actors/actresses ,which helps them actually showcase their talents in myriad of roles,(even if some films end up being just commercial projects) from which directors can assess your potential for their future projects.

I was really surprised with Katrina's role in Sooryavanshi, she is very good with action and makers should have utilized the potential rather than using her like an eye candy and giving such role which has no significance at all. Even if we remove that character, it would have very less impact on the storyline. And this point is applicable in most other movies as well, like RRR where alia got really less screen space and such good actresses with their power and potential should have been utilized in movies rather than just praising the men throughout the movie. I would have loved if the roles were larger and enough for the lead actresses too, they didn't get on top for doing nothing. It would be really boring if female leads get such roles only. I think powerful female characters in bwood used to exist if we look back. Mother India was the first powerful female lead written. Shabana Azmi in Arth, Meenakshi Sheshadri in damini, Kajol in Gupt/Dushman, Vidya Balan in Kahani, Sridevi in English Vinglish, Rani Mukherji in Mardaani, Konkona in page 3, Tapsee in Naam Shabana etc. One actress that really surprised me was Katrina Kaif. There was a time when I felt sick & tired of her in repetitive roles till Tiger Zinda hai, Phantom came.( But it took 8-10 films for her to get a role like Zoya) . She is not a great actress but Kabir Khan made sure she had a substantial role . she not only portrayed the love interest but did some serious action too. Speaking of female characters, can we forget Zoya Akhtar? I really love the way she writes the female characters in her films. Head strong, independent, stubborn yet emotional, loving. A lot depends on the writers, directors . And of course, WE the audience- what n how we need to see them. We definitely wanna see heorines in action more often now rather than being an eye candy or a subtle powerful character in drama films.

She's atleast vocal about these things (although she's also vocal about her political views and criticizes others, which i don't care about) meanwhile others don't even speak up or do a film like that. Her filmography is itself a proof of the fact that she doesn't like being the same emotional and naive girl dancing around with the “hero” on those typical songs.
Hope Dhaakad will recieve the appreciation it deserves.

But problem is girls are not using their brains like you do...they are still hating her for her tweets proving that large section of girls actually want to see them dancing around the so called hero

This is why I love Anmol’s review. I completely forgot how Rekha did some string female character roles. Kudos!

But in KGF , Raveena(ofc she is a woman) had a Big role .....and Yash's Mother (played by Archana Jois) had the biggest role in my opinion (after Yash ofc) You totally ignored that.

Yes....but in the same movie Srinidhi Shetty (who played Reena, love interest of Rocky) was nothing less then an eye candy in the movie. She had no role in the movie. Except one or two times when Rockey wanted to portray his soft side!
