This is a review of the mail-away exclusive elite G.I. Joe infantryman figure "Super Trooper". He is instantly recognizable due his vac-metalized silver chrome chest plate, helmet, gun and riot shield. It is not well explained what the purpose of the shiny metal accoutrments are for. In 1988 you needed 4 special proofs-of-purchase to get him (found in specially marked carded figures or vehicle boxes). The following year, he was available through regular flag-point mail-order. He was a very popular send-in during the time of original release, but has little collector value now due to his non-character and ridiculous color.

The hole in front of the hand hold is a manufacturing thing. Specifically its due to molding, the hole is there due to the mold needing to extend below the shield to be able to form the grip. Only solution wouldave been to mold the hand hold seperately and that would add cost in assembly

Captain Freedom is who I always thought of when this clown was released.

Definitely a Captain America reference with the shield and public relations background.

I had the renamed 90's repaint of this figure (Rapid-Fire) as a kid. Always thought it had a really unique design. My cousin had this version. I always thought the chrome combined with the character bio and codename sort of implied he was something of a PR exercise for the team.(which is further supported by the fact that Public relations was listed as one of his specialties)

It was the exact opposite over here: I don't recall either Sgt Slaughter or The Fridge being promoted heavily as a mail away in the UK, but I remember Super Trooper being advertised for a loooong time. I think the other two weren't that well known in the UK, so maybe they just used Super Trooper in place of all three!

I would offer that the comic strip was likely an homage to the '70s comic book advertisements near the end of the original line when the ads were short comics introducing the likes of Bullet Man and the Intruders.

All the chrome makes me think of optical camo or maybe, as a connect to the abba song, it blinds enemies. "Super trooper beams are gonna blind me, shining like the sun". Basically he blinds enemies to avoid getting shot

love the short animation at the end. I had to go an watch that commercial for ol Super trooper after you mentioned it. your dead right on him randomly picking up the shield , how many of those live action commercials did they do ? I remember seeing one with the 90's style duke in the red and tan. as cheesy as those commercials are it looks like they had a lot of fun making some the costumes and building the sets.

Hey Kevin i think he is a tribute to "Super Joe and The Shield", The toys had flashlights in their stomachs and heads and Shields.

Ah yes Super Trooper. Figure that's basically G.I. Joe's take on Captain America. Makes me wonder why not only he wasn't in comic books during Marvel run but G.I. Joe didn't have crossover with Marvel Universe when they did have those with Transformers.

I didn't think much about the armour, but it is curious that no explanation was given. Maybe it's laser reflective?

Oh, if I had the resources to have a collection! I would display this figure with the Steel Brigade troops vs the Iron Grenadiers!

Minus Slaughter I always thought the mail away figures were corny. To me that is ironic due to the work it took to obtain them. It seemed like they would be more fleshed out as far as story and design.

Chris Kaliber I wanted every gi joe i could get my hands on so i mailed away for anything i could. I got the Fridge, super trooper, and lifeline (from rice krispies). Didn't get Slaughter mail away cuz i had the Triple T Slaughter and the Warthog Slaughter. I could have sworn there were more '80's-90's mail aways, but i can't recall.

    Men Who Stare At Goats
hi. my theory is that Super Trooper is a Psychic Soldier, a rare successful product of the New Age Army, initiated in the 70's. the chromed metallic gear? a military application of the tin-foiled hat. Peace, Love and Flower Power...

So they (allegedly) put Larry Hama in a chrome military outfit and had him beat up Destro's crew with a large chrome shield.... I love it. LMAO. Kind of weird how Super Trooper never made it into a Larry Hama G.I Joe comic since he is (allegedly) based on Larry Hama. Strangely enough, Super Trooper is in a Marvel G.I Joe comic. He was in issue # 12 of G.I Joe: European Missions. Sadly, that issue is hard to find.. I'm not sure who wrote it (Dan Abnet wrote issue # 11, Steve Allan issue # 13. Issue 12???)
