European Foulbrood Diagnosis & Treatment In Honey Bees With The Bee Inspectors

  • In this video I spent time with the bee inspectors on a European foul brood case.
    This site is not one of mine but the location is kept private.
    The bee inspectors had discovered EFB in the area and were dealing with the outbreak. Some colonies were destroyed on this site that were heavily infected but most were treated by shook swarming the bees into clean boxes with frames and foundation.
    There are two types of foul brood that affect honey bees American Foulbrood and European Foul Brood.
    There is no treatment for AFB in the UK but we can treat for mild cases of EFB. In This video the Bee inspectors demonstrate how to eradicate EFB from a site giving the bees a second chance.

    Thanks so much for such an informative video. I had one of the Regional Inspectors around last week, checking on EFB at my (very) small apiary, fortunately negative, the Inspector was so helpful.

    Another great vid Gruff. Been there, got the tee shirt! First year beekeeper, so a baptism of fire (literally!) bee’s bounced back really well and my local inspector was extremely helpful. I know I could call him up if I had any concerns at all which is really reassuring

    When they scortch the boxes to sterilise, how would this work if you have polyhives?

    • @trevor311264
      @trevor311264 3 роки тому

      Poly hives are non-absorbent so any infection is only on the surface, so other sterilisation methods are appropriate like a short soak in a solution of soda crystals.

    Can you still extract the honey before burning the frames?

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 роки тому

      Technically yes. I’m not sure if that’s legal though because the honey itself has foulbrood too and could potentially infect other bees.
      You’ll need to contact the bee inspectors to confirm.
