Many of us have been waiting for this reaction for ages!
Hartnell had effectively retired from acting since his last television appearance in an ATV play in 1970 called "Crimes of Passion". Barry Letts, the producer, rang him up to see if he would be interested in appearing in "The Three Doctors" and he readily said yes. A few days after, Hartnell's wife Heather rang Barry in some confusion as her husband was talking about returning and Letts told her of his conversation. Heather revealed that her husband had advanced arteriosclerosis and his short term memory was badly affected. He therefore couldn't appear. Letts therefore made alternative plans with her permission. Hartnell's contributions would be all on film, recorded in one morning at Ealing Film studios, with him reading his lines from caption boards and inserted into the episodes. That filming took place on Monday 6th November 1972 - his last ever day working as an actor. Jon Pertwee was on call to be at the studios in the afternoon for his sequences in Eps 3 and 4 so Troughton was also brought in for a photocall. For some years, it was assumed these pictures were taken in Rickmansworth during location filming but a couple of years back a fan pinpointed the exact place at the back of Ealing studios where they were taken.
A few weeks earlier, all three actors met for the first time at Ray Rathbourne Studios, SW11 on 18 October 1972 for a photoshoot for the Radio Times cover. Google "The Three Doctors" for all these images. The interior ones are the 18th October session and the outdoor ones are the 6th November meet.
It's nice to see that Pat really did love playing the Doctor, despite the behind the scenes issues he had during his era, and even how into the 80s, when the Convention Circuit began, he was always happy to go around the world, just to talk about this show that, while only a small part of his acting career, was certainly his most impactful role.
Issues? What issues did Patrick Troughton have? First Ive heard anyone say he had any.
@@theyellowlightsaber3193 It was mostly exhaustion and production issues. Pat, Frazer, Deborah and Wendy at the beginning of her time, would often be filming one story, trying to wrap up the story before, while rehearsing and shooting any location shots for the next story, all within the same week. Stories would sometimes be dropped halfway through because Derrick Sherwin and Peter Bryant either couldn’t get it to work or just deciding they didn’t like it, so by the time they were halfway through making Season 5, Pat had already decided that he would leave after Season 6.
for classic era fan this story is VERY precious, not only is it a darned good story it is the first time we 1st and 2nd in colour and the last time we see 1st. I loved yours, wait til you see the brigs reaction!!!
Back in the day we were all spoilt for this story as the Radio Times had all the three Doctors on the front cover before this episode aired. Great reaction though ;-)
@@CaptainNemo1701 Different publication - that was the 10th anniversary special from a year later
I remember some comment on the DVD extras that Jon insisted on being the one in the middle as he was the current Doctor.
It wasn’t just Radio Times… there was quite a lot of newspaper coverage too. (Not a lot by today’s standards, but…)
Wonderful reaction, it was all that I’d hoped for. Your crying started me crying, lol. Yep it was Billy Hartnell, although he was very very ill at this point.
Yes he was, when asked to appear he answered the phone and said yes. His wife found out she spoke to the BBC and said he was too ill to appear and wouldn't be able to remember his lines, so his part was reduced so he could still take part but it not be too much of a strain on him.
Me too. I LOVED the reaction to this TERRIFIC episode.
It was VERY wise to NOT know the title ahead of time! Made the reaction all the more PURE.
Its great that the "anniversery" episode had multiple Doctors.
And so wonderful that Hartnell got to put in one LAST performance on this series (however brief), despite his severe health issues. So professional. That man was one of the Greats
@@sharkdentures3247 dude edit part of what you put, It could be seen as a spoiler.
@@ListerDavid Yeah, sorry. I kind of thought that after I sent it. But it seemed like such a small & distant semi-"spoiler" as to hardly be worth changing.
My Bad.
Done.
This was Hartnell's last appearance of all he'd die a couple of years later 😥🎩
In the 50th, when Ten says to Eleven "I don't like it" (in reference to the TARDIS interior being different) and Eleven replies "You never do" it is a callback to this episode.
Fans who have never seen classic Who didn't get the joke.
Clara also says the the very same line "You've decorated, I don't like it." to twelve in Deep Breath.
The redecorating joke was also used by Matt Smith in Closing Time when he visits Craig.
And the Second Doctor says it again to the Brig during his retirement.
The first doctor did say one day he'd come back and he did. Great reaction. It's a good thing you got through so many eps during the start of the lock down or we'd have to wait even longer.
Yeah. But he said that to Susan, as he abandoned her. The big fibber. Another girl who waited.
@@paulkennedy8701 He was secretly speaking to the viewers.
@@soupdragon1971
He really wasn't. Not in 1964. From the viewers' point of view the Doctor wasn't going anywhere. And neither was William Hartnell. Both of them would be with us week after week for years.
It was only retrospectively, in the 1980s, that that line became a message for the viewers.
@@paulkennedy8701 Sorry I was being very tongue in cheek with my comments. You are 100% correct. Just a little bit of fantasy on my part.
@@soupdragon1971
I figured. And I almost started off by saying "I know you're joking but...".
But the thing is some people probably do believe it was addressed to the viewers. (I think it was delivered straight down the lens.) So I thought I would just make my statement in as neutral a way as I could. Thank you for taking it the right way.
Yep, back in 1973, and even knowing that all Doctors to that point were going to be in the story, that was pretty much my own reaction when Pat turned up. The icing was seeing William Hartnell for the first time since 1966.
Your reaction to Troughton's appearance is priceless. I keep coming back to it
Absolutely amazing reaction to the appearance of the 2nd Doctor. And then the 1st. Loved it. Hartnell wasn't allowed to appear fully due to his medical condition so was only allowed to appear sat down, trapped, reading off cue cards. Can't wait for next episode 😊
Now you know why we said nothing. And yes, that was Hartnell in his final acting appearance (they were lucky to even have him in the story due to his declining health), he died a few years later.
I like the "we" said nothing 🤔 In fact,Hartnell died around two and a half years after this was recorded, and just over two years after it was shown (Dec 72 - Jan 73) in April '75.
I felt overjoyed too when Patrick Troughton came back. He was my favourite Doctor. Obviously I knew he would be in it as back when this was first broadcast we always watched the titles. I know how you felt seeing him 💕
Mad respect that you and Sesska looked away and kept the title from yourselves!
Just when you were thinking that Sgt Benton's first time in the Tardis would be the highlight of the episode, eh...?!
Love the 'Dandy and a Clown' line, and Jo's little Beatles reference too (not to mention her snazzy blue outfit...!). In any case, that was well worth the wait...hope you enjoy the rest of the story, yes?
William Hartnell loved being the Doctor, it was great that he got one last chance to reprise the role before he died.
Did you notice the “contact” telepathy between the two doctors is the same and as the Doctor and the Master used in Spyfall this season
The monster getting around via the pipes dates to 'X-The Unknown' a late 1940s British novel and film broadly about the fears of radioactive fallout.
Worth seeing as it functions like an ancestor of the Quatermass serials and Doctor Who. - and perhaps even Godzilla.
marie clare (and patrick troughton) you've made me bawl my eyes out. i'm HELLA behind on your s8&9 reactions (i'm gonna catch up though i SWEAR) but i couldn't resist stopping by for this one! i randomly saw this episode in isolation, like, several years back. way before i started watching classic who properly. needless to say, troughton made an impression.
your reactions paint just why it's so great to watch classic who in order. loads of people skip around and just watch a story here and there, but that kind deprives them the opportunity to care for these characters and appreciate their development. your tearful reaction was EVERYTHING.
Thank you so much!
They did this because it was the tenth (anniversary) season. As others have said, William Hartnell was too ill so could only do these small inserts. I have never cried at this story until today. Also, how brilliant are the Gell Guards?
7:24: Yes, I had much the same expression when I saw this episode for the first time! 😊
10:10: William Hartnell's last performance. It's almost as if he'd never been gone.
Happy tenth anniversary of who. So glad you weren't spoiled
Wow, that reaction was everything I had hoped for and more - I am so glad nobody spoilt this for you. As you can see, multi-Doctor stories are not just a new series phenomenon, and it was great that William Hartnell was able to take part in this and celebrate the success and endurance of the role he originated. Even though his health was so bad by this time, and he was reading off cue cards and unable to interact with his successors in the studio, he still manages to invest his lines with some of the old fire. Troughton and Pertwee would become great friends in the years after this story, but there was some tension between them when they recorded this, because of their very different approaches to acting. Whereas Pertwee liked to be line perfect, Pat was much more given to improvisation and changing his lines, which often threw Pertwee and caused some arguments. At least they did come to like each other afterwards!
The story came about in part because it was in the Pertwee era that fans of the show started to organise themselves into groups, and also began to get in touch with the production office with their thoughts and ideas. They were very keen on having a story that brought the three Doctors together, and as Who's tenth anniversary began to approach Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks decided it would be a very appropriate way of marking it. However, the story was actually broadcast between December '72 and January '73, almost a year before the show's tenth birthday.
Marie-Clare, your reaction to this episode is to die for.
You was unsure if it was Hartnell or not so I am compelled to scream "Look at the credits!!!!".
The countdown makes this all very exciting. Never underestimate the excitement of a good countdown.
"Time is relative" A quote from the Second Doctor at the end of the War Games, at the time I was thinking during your reaction then, Dont worry he comes back! 🙂 great reaction, worth the surprise, keep up the good work.
This is my fave video on YT. I have been a fan all my life, and i remember watching this when i was 4 years old, kinda with the same wide eyed amazement that you had. And now, i get to watch all those old stories again, for the very first time, through your eyes. thank you, you're an absolute tonic. kudos. Now i need to see if you have reacted to any Blakes 7. :)
This was the tenth anniversary special episode. William Hartnell was scripted to have a more active part in the story but then it was discovered his physical condition as well as his memory had continued to deteriorate due to his arteriosclerosis. So they set him up in a studio in a chair covered in dark cloth and had his lines on cards before him so he could read them.
I loved watching that. Possibly your best reaction yet. I felt so sorry for you when you started crying as I knew you had just got over him. That is William Hartnell but he was incredibly ill at that point and he had to read his lines of a cue board. He was I think in the original scripts very involved but his wife had to ring the producers and say his health wont allow it
That's correct, I believe Hartnell had said yes though. Thinking he was more able than he really was.
@@oldwebshooter Indeed. His wife explained that he had good days and off-days. Atherosclerosis had affected his brain, which resulted in mood swings and memory lapses - the first signs of which were possibly apparent in hindsight by his tetchiness and the legendary flubbed lines during his tenure on Doctor Who.
The Three Doctors went out in 1973 and was probably William Hartnell’s last appearance on television before he died in 1975. He doesn’t look right because was already very ill by this point. When they contacted Hartnell by phone to see if he was interested in doing the 10th anniversary story he told them nothing about how bad his illness was and was very enthusiastic however upon learning of his commitment his wife had to later contact the producers to spell out how limited he was due to his condition. Upon learning of Harnell’s health producers rewrote his part with his limitations in mind which is why you only see him on the screen clearly sat down and not in person with the other actors...
Bloody great reaction! Welcome to the tenth anniversary special of Doctor who! This is actually the last performance William Hartnell ever did he would die two years later
This was the last time William hartnell played the doctor he died shortly after this episode
This was filmed late in 1972 and he died on 23rd April 1975 so a couple of years but he was quite ill even when he filmed this. Incidentally we just passed the 45th anniversary of his passing. Quam celeriter obduco hora.
That reaction was wonderful and so pure. I'm so glad you didn't get spoiled Marie-Clare. 😊
In Terrance Dicks' 1975 novelisation of 'The Three Doctors', it is Jo rather than the third Doctor who replies 'Crossing?' to the question about what a bridge is for - leading the sassy first Doctor to retort: 'Gel's got more sense than the two of you put together...'
oh i LOVE that! 😂
Someone said that when fans say they remember an episode, they most likely remember Terrance Dick's novelisation of it. After all, that could go read and reread, while the episodes were on once and then gone - as we thought at the time, forever
I miss Terrance's books - I had a load at one time, but sadly my mother decided I had too many books and took steps to remedy that.
It's been said that the bickering between Doctors Two and Three in some way echoed the backstage tensions between the actors, but this is an exaggeration. Jon Pertwee, who was a stickler for his lines and cues, suddenly found himself sharing top billing with an actor who would improvise around the script (Say- Pertwee: 'Well, what ARE you going to say, Pat?' Troughton: 'Oh, I don't know - all comes to the same thing in the end...'). This was, of course, amicably resolved.
There was `some` tension between the two early on- but it got sorted and they got on fine from thereon.
Liz Sladen said the difference on the studio floor Jon was practice, practice, practice but Tom was a one take actor and much more relaxed
Omg. Watching this I realised, for the first time, the Timelord who has reservations on the Doctor crossing his own timestream is the nice one from the War Games who let Jamie and Zoe visit D2 in his holding cell.. Hurrah for continuity
William Hartnell had a much bigger part in the original script, and when asked to do this show he was very happy to do so, but his wife got in touch with the producers and told them he was very ill, so they cut his part down and he filmed all his lines in a studio in an afternoon reading off large cue cards. There was a photo shoot for this story with the other two Doctors, they came to Hartnell's home in costume and they discovered the back wall of his garage had been painted as a landscape, so they used that as the backdrop for the famous photo.
I've have seen people laugh in hysterics when first seeing this story. I've *never* seen them cry before!
I guess that's the effect watching Doctor Who in order, and having no idea what is coming next makes to the viewing experience!
Even back in 1973, this season opener had been heavily publicised, even getting the front cover of the Radio Times that month, so everyone watching knew what to expect.
Lovely reaction, Marie-Clare, bless you! Such a great serial and a fabulous opening episode. Just catching up from yesterday. Now I have the added bonus of watching part two right away! Excellent stuff!
I remember watching this when it was shown on BBC Wales '30 December 1972'. The scene from 5:03, I was I was just 3 years old. I saw this again in 1981 during the ''Five faces of Doctor Who'' season in 1981 and that's when I devolved a crush on Katy Manning !!!
Your reaction was worth sitting up late for!
William Hartnell was quite ill at this time, and his memory was pretty bad, so they had to give him a "ringside seat", as it were, and put cue-cards up with his lines; they cut him into the story as and when needed.
That was a really beautiful reaction. Your emotional response to seeing Patrick Troughton is very touching. Sadly, William Hartnell's health was very fragile by this point, so he doesn't play a very active role in the story, but his presence is worth appreciating. You may notice that one of the Time Lords discussing the Doctor's predicament is played by the same actor who played one of the Time Lord judges who exiled the Doctor to Earth in The War Games
Sadly the only time the three of them were really together in person, was for the Radio Times photo shoot. But there are several great photos from that day, one of which I have a copy of on my wall.
I’ve always thought in my mind the first doctors appearance here explains his disappearance in the massacre
Believe me, when I first saw The Three Doctors on PBS, it blew my mind that I got to see the first three Doctors in a story. 10th anniversary? In 1983??? I thought there was only one Doctor in the series... until I was shocked to learn my first ever Doctor (spoilers) did this thing called regeneration. Sheesh! What a series!
Your love for the second doctor just warms my heart!
Thank you!
April 23rd was the 45th anniversary of his death.
Firstly 1st time commenting secondly having watched you since you watched edge of destruction I was waiting for this. I love seeing people get into "Classic Who" and to see you emotionally involved in these episodes and great characters is wonderful. Might not comment too much. But am enjoying being on this journey with you Marie Claire. Enjoy The Three Doctors.
Hartnell wasnt well by the time they shot this which is why they had to limit his appearance, he read all his lines as he was suffering chronic memory loss by then and they just let him sit down to read it, Im Australian and we co funded this 10th anniversary special so that it could happen as the show was extremely popular here at the time.
Yes we're at the Tenth anniversary special! Such a classic. It's always great to see Pat back for this and William one last time. Poor Hartnell was very weak at this point and therefore couldn't do a lot of action as the production team had originally hoped, so they gave the first Doctor an advisory role in this story. Also we have a New Tardis console room, and my favorite design of the Pertwee era.
Congrats on this video. A lot of fans have been waiting for this, and you reacted to it beautifully x
Hello from the 🇺🇲 states. I grew up on classic Who on our PBS station. (Tom Baker) In my 45 years of existence I dont think I have ever seen so many fans emotionally attached to a show. It just goes to show how much care the writers took into putting together all these great episodes over the years
00:23 " my gut instinct says CYBERMEN" ....oh bless you really didn't know 😁😁
My favourite reaction of yours so far. :)
I really felt it when you started crying 🥺 I too have strong feelings towards Patrick Troughton/ second Doctor. He was a phenomenal actor and I admire him so much❤️
Absolutely brilliant MC! You do not disappoint ❤️💕😍
You still had the best reaction of all the shows I’ve seen! Great job!
Awwww thank you so much!
I'm not a patron but at times like this I wish I was. An inspired choice to have _this_ as your first full-length reaction.
I loved your reaction💖 i was just the same as an excited kid when i saw this episode when it originally aired
Just rewatched again myself now and completely forgotten how good this story was
An amazing reaction, Ms. Marie-Claire. Thank you so much. :)
Great reaction! Back in the day the day I was too young to watch Jon Pertwee's Doctor - I came into it at the transition to Tom Baker's era but read lots of the novelisations of the Pertwee and Troughton eras. The stories for both second and third doctors were great but like you I struggled with the Mutants on screen (great novelisation though).
This was one of those stories that I never saw at the time but got the chance at the 20th anniversary when the BBC aired it again and it didn't disappoint from the novelisation I'd already read some years earlier.
The Three Doctors was one of the first episodes of Doctor Who I ever watched. It was another milestone for Doctor Who cos it was the first story which The Doctor met his previous incarnations. Jon Pertwee and Patrick Troughton had great chemistry. It was sad that it was William Hartnell's final appearance as the original Doctor. He was unable to appear opposite Jon and Patrick cos his illness was worsening and instead, they had Hartnell sit down and they would show him his lines on a board. Good story and it led me to becoming a fan of Doctor Who.
William Hartnell (1908 - 1975)
Great reaction and what a cliffhanger.
You really got attached to dear old Patrick didn’t you?
I did too back in the sixties 😪
I've been waiting for this reaction. I knew you'd love it.
Ahh I can’t wait to see this!

Best reaction yet, I've watched it 5 times and will likely watch it some more. So glad it didn't get spoilt for you.
Aww thank you so much!

Amazing story
I remember this very episode.
Your face when troughton appears is wat reactions are all about hahah! Gunna b tough but im gunna wait till u upload all the episodes of the three doctors and watch them with a chinese lol
I was sad for your Reactions when the second Doctor appeared. I loved your smile when all three Doctor were there. The first Doctor was very ill when this was filmed, so he couldn't appear in the TARDIS normally. That's why he was filmed in that object.
Great reaction as always I saw your full length one too. Your emotional as you care and enjoy this great shoe I love your reaction great lady u r😀😉
I feel sorry for Hartnell .He suffered badly from ill health ,suffered stroke after stroke ,and ended up dying on a hospital bed .Remember he was a war hero and a great actor in his peak years .
I loved your reaction! Glad it wasn't spoiled.
I just can’t wait to see this 🤗
So sorry I missed the beginning I just finished watching your reaction, after-prog recovery and comments. I wish I could remember exactly how I felt back when it was broadcast but it's a blur. My timeline's obviously out of sync! Wonderful reaction obviously.
Such a lovely reaction!
This was William hartnells last tv appearance made just over 2 years before he died.
The Tardis console room was redesigned following 'The Time Monster' to reflect the original control room. It being the 10th anniversary - but as your MIND IS COMPLETELY BLOWN I think we'll let further comments about Season 10 go for now...
You're emotion is so palpable and intense
I was looking forward to your reaction to this! I could say a great deal about this and many other stories, but my lips are sealed...er, perhaps that should say my fingertips are in concrete
So moving!
LOVE your reaction to this.
Great 😊 show good doctors the whole lot of them 🇦🇺👽💜💙💓 warren and ingrid Melbourne Australia
If you watch Hartnell closely he is reading his lines from a cue card just off camera because he was so ill he couldn't remember them.
Such a lovely Reaction.
Wow! I wasn't expecting your reaction to be that emotional. Though I suppose with no spoilers it was a massive surprise - especially as you must have been wondering why people didn't want you see the titles to a story about a bunch of blobby jelly creatures. :D
That's a weather balloon 🎩
Your reaction was priceless ...well done everyone for keeping schtum... "fuckety- fuck-fuck " indeed !! Lol xx
So glad you didn't get spoilerd.
Great reaction!
I have so much love for you young Doctor Who fans.☺️
Awesome reaction, so glad you weren't spoilt for this episode.
Patrick Troughton was really loveable as the Doctor.

Don't know if you've seen any xth Doc stories yet, but watching your reactions make me feel like an "x"...
I know this story inside and out - one of my favourite 3rd Doc stories that I watched over and over in the 90's thanks to VHS - but watching it through your eyes was absolutely magical. No... Not Cybermen! :)
Best reaction iv watched yet, this is my fav season of Jon Pertwee, Enjoy
