Susan found grandfather again. They were reunited. It wasn't hot air that he said they would, it happened. Outstanding moment echoing back so far and dealing with the early show. A needed victory for the softer morally caring type of fans.
It’s amazing how easily Pat and Jon just effortlessly flow back into their roles as their Doctors, it’s as if they never left. Now you see why we wanted you to watch ‘K-9 and Company’.
My first ever Doctor Who story. I had a splinter in my finger as a four year old in 1997 and my Dad stuck on the first VHS tape he could find to calm me down... it was the scene with the Cybermen talking to each other 'he must be interrogated first' etc... and my journey into becoming a Doctor Who fan began!
You don't need to talk a lot during this reaction, I'm enjoying seeing you with this expression on your face, 😮. I've been looking forward to you seeing this for a long, long time and I'm loving every minute of it!
‘Are they going to face something that was for their era?’ Well in the original script, the third Doctor was going to save Sarah-Jane Smith from a group of Autons, but it was cut for budgetary reasons.
There is some incredibly subtle acting from Anthony Ainley in the “I may be seated?” scene. You can see he is extremely interested in the offer and his mind is racing at the possibility of a new regeneration cycle however he doesn’t want to appear too keen and weaken his position of power and being needed by the Timelords. It’s worth noting that Anthony didn’t want to portray his Master as a panto villain and actually studied Roger’s portrayal very closely in order (he thought) to play the character in the same way. Direction would put all this effort on the scrap heap, however there are many tiny moments when a thoroughly convincing character is portrayed. This moment and a lot of Time Flight after the unmasking are unfortunately all to brief. Anthony Ainley was my Master and there was a whole lot more to his acting than panto button pressing (I’m looking at you Logopolis) and moustache twirling villainy.
Marie-Claire, your genuine surprise and obvious love for the past incarnations of the Doctor and his companions brings a joy to my heart and a tear to my eye. This is the reaction I had been waiting for and I wasn't disappointed. I love seeing someone who has a true love for this show and all the memorable characters that were introduced to the viewers over the years react with genuine emotion to this special 20th anniversary reunion story. Last thing...in case no one else has mentioned it, the actor playing the First Doctor is someone who looks and sounds similar...his name is Richard Hurndall. William Hartnell passed away in 1975.
This is why I said watch K9 and company before you got here because by this point Sarah has K-9 Brig was supposed to be with Pertwee Sarah was supposed to Tom But as Tom didn’t want to return so soon they used footage from Shada the one that got cancelled to the strikes in season 17. And therefore they bumped Brig and and Sarah up a Doctor Also Frazer couldn’t get time off from Emmerdale to feature in any majoybway Susan, Sarah, k-9, Brig, Romana, Doctors 1-5 and they even included a clip of Hartnell too do they had the original too even though he died and kinda fitting since that was his speech when he left Susanand he got reunited with Susan here Also as you can probably tell, Kameleon isn’t going to feature in every story despite being a companion.
Many have commented that the cold intro with Bill Hartnell sets Richard Hurndall up to fail as the 1st Doctor, but bear in mind that - at least for my generation (I was 10) - your only televisual reference point for the original Time Lord was likely to be the repeat of 'An Unearthly Child' from the end of 1981. It was only much later that his ticks and mannerisms could be observed by us youngsters; via VHS and then DVD. And the phenomenon, now widespread, of having a favourite Doctor AND a Doctor you grew up with (which may or may not be the same thing) wasn't really possible. We were living in the Now, before the great nostalgia boom of home entertainment. Even seeing a Dalek for the first time in four years was a big thing!
This is another great special for the 20th anniversary it was a nice treat of an episode. The only two down sides of this is no Tom Baker who felt coming back was too soon but later regretted the decision and by this point the death of William Hartnell who was replaced by Richard Hurndall who was brilliant as The First Doctor but he just didn't feel like Hartnell but it was awesome to see Troughton and Pertwee return The Brig and Sarah Jane and of course Susan. This could had just as easily been called The Four Doctors.
Actually that's not the whole story i read baker wanted to.be the centre of the story & even wanted more screen time than Davison! He admits he had an ego back.then and when he saw he wouldn't have as much he decided not to return and maybe the to soon things entered in a little to. At least he is here in some form with the unaired scenes
@@philfitnesspt6139 I thought Baker was going to be the main Doctor anyway as appearantly he was going to do all the Capitol scenes whilst Davidson went on foot to the tower (not sure if Hurndall was to go with him or remain in the TARDIS to later pilot it to the tower).
5 years old, and this was SUCH a huge moment of my life. Got to stay up extra late to watch it, because it didn't air at a normal time, and we all knew it was going to be a major WHO event; the biggest ever indeed, essentially a Doctor Who movie. I'm glad to see that the version you're watching is the original. It was "remastered" and extended for a special cut in the 90's which had its benefits, but - well -this is the original, you might say. You have to remember that whilst you were watching Hartnell just 2 odd years ago, the rest of the world hadn't seen him in the role for 17 years (ok, plus The Three Docs), so recasting Hartnell wasn't as absurd as it seems now. There was no home video at this point, so it wasn't as if everyone was watching old content all the time. Hurndall's performance was generally accepted as a good enough job, though I think 1st Doc fans probably would disagree.
I remember when this first aired -- everyone was thrilled to see them all, and I like you was especially happy to see the third Doctor back. He is still my favorite after all this time, and after having seen the recovered episodes on BritBox, Patrick Troughton is rapidly assuming the number two spot. "Not allowed? Me? I'm allowed everywhere!"
I was very much looking forward to this, it was seeing your intense reaction to the Three Doctors that got me interested, it was nice to see someone show so much love for characters from a very different age of storytelling. Also, fun fact: for publicity purposes, the Doctors for this episode all got together and did a big photoshoot with a creepy replica of Tom Baker. They had to get pretty creative to disguise the fact that he was permanently frozen in one pose across all the photos!
I have been looking forward to seeing your reaction to this for some time, as know how much you adore Jon Pertwee and also the cybermen, and this story features both. I felt your emotion, as it must have been a huge shock to see all these doctors and companion together for this 20th anniversary special. A truly classic story in the history of Doctor Who x
You are getting a much better reaction to episodes like this than viewers did at the time. Mainly because the Radio Times used to spoil almost every returning character or monster with a front page spread the week before!
I have waited so flipping long to see your reaction to this! Aww it really hit you in the feels. Anniversary Multi-Doctor stories are so special because it's one of the few shows that can do it and it make sense and be so satisfying to watch. Spiderman No Way Home took a lot from the Doctor Who Anniversaries but with a much bigger budget. Here's hoping RTD can pull off a great 60th.
Well seeing your reaction to the five Doctors which I've been patiently awaiting since The Three Doctors had me grinning from ear to ear uncontrollably can't wait for part 2. Also those tears at the 3rd Doctor's appearance are totally fine what a wonderful response.
This is wonderful. It is definitely going to join my favourite "return to" reactions of yours. It shows that you not wanting to know spoilers, even the story title, pays off for both you and us (I love you continue to do that, an extra benefit that wouldn't have been possible at time of original transmission as due to publicity etc). And although this is quite often a story recommended for people to start off with when watching classic WHO, it proves by having watched the previous 20 seasons, you have have that extra connection with the characters and the nostalgia (including seeing K9 & COMPANY in its transmission order). Anyway, thanks again for another brilliant video. Looking forward to the next parts. :-) Simon (Worcester, England).
I only just found your channel and I’m gonna go back and watch all your classic who reactions now! It’s always interesting to see how someone used to the revived series looks at the original one! I was a bit of an anomaly cos I was born in 1985 and am too young to remember the old show going out for the first time but I caught it on some 90s repeats and then on VHSs I got from the library. When they announced the show was coming back it was on my 18th birthday and I was so excited that my dream had come true!
That reaction was more than worth the wait. Fantastic stuff, and it shows the value of watching the show from the beginning, as it makes a story like this so much more meaningful and special. This was first broadcast on 25 November 1983, two days after the 20th anniversary, and was shown as the centrepiece of that year’s Children in Need night, thus beginning Who’s long association with Children in Need. It was the first time the show had produced a feature length special, which was not part of a season, and it was also the first time an episode was broadcast overseas first - in the US it went out on the anniversary itself. Terrance Dicks was given the daunting task of writing the script, and trying to fit in all the returning Doctors and companions. This was no mean feat, but he was an excellent choice owing to his long association with the show as a writer and former script editor, who knew its history and mythology inside out. JNT asked William Hartnell’s widow for permission to recast the first Doctor, which was a nice gesture, and Richard Hurndall ended up with the role. Tom did initially agree to appear, but changed his mind at the last minute, seemingly because he felt it was too soon since he had left, and also because he didn’t want to share screen time with the other Doctors! He did give permission for old, unused footage of him to be included, however.
Been waiting ages for your reaction on this story, it was just brilliant seeing all the doctors again. Plus past companions. In the original script the third doctor and Sarah would come across a village full of Autons.
This was the 20th anniversary special. It wasn't the first story I ever watched, but it was the first I ever heard of. Richard Hurndall was brought in to play the 1st Doctor because of his resemblance to William Hartnell. The footage of the 4th Doctor was used from the unfinished story "Shada". Tom Baker had only been gone a couple of years by that point and he felt it was too soon to come back and he caught a lot flack from fans and fellow Doctors over that.
I can't speak for the wider country, but I recall the Radio Times - with its now iconic cover of the Five Doctors surrounding the Tomb of Rassilon - being passed around at school. We were living in Lower Earley, just outside Reading, at the time (19 Bridport Close, if you want to look it up on Street View!); a new house, with eccentric central heating and wine red shag pile carpets throughout. I mention this because I recall running my hands through it in frustration waiting for this bloody special to start. And I was glued to it throughout.
Small piece of trivia, you lovely folks in the US got to see it before we did! It was shown in the UK as part of the annual Children in Need telethon so the broadcast was delayed until the Friday evening☺
We got our dad to record this story on Betamax(!) Needless to add it was played to destruction...lol fantastic Marie Clare. Thank you so much for sharing . Your reactions were a real treat and I'm glad you weren't 'spoilered' ☺
As a kid that missed the 1st Doctor by 18 years, Hurndel was basically my first experience of the first... i think he did a great job filling Hartnels shoes after finally seeing the 1st's stories years latter.
Five doctors , best anniversary special ever ! Seeing all everyone again is so awesome missing Hartnell , but Richard Hurndall does a great job as the 1st doctor.
It's odd to think of this as the end of season 20, as there was originally a 6 month gap between the King's Demons in March '83 and The Five Doctors in November '83, so it was actually closer to the start of season 21 than the end of season 20. Even though I recorded this on VHS at the time, I don't remember it being shown as part of Children In Need.
The BBC had rather underestimated the cult appeal of this show. When Doctors and companions gathered at Longleat (home of the Dr Who exhibition) in April for the 20th anniversary, they expected only a modest number of people to turn up for the event. In truth, the place was swamped and fans were actually asked not to contribute to the congestion and turn back! And when an even more ambitious gathering occurred in Chicago on November 23rd (two days ahead of 'The Five Doctors' actual broadcast in the UK - American fans actually getting to see it first!) the result was like a religious experience. That spectacle was really the forerunner of the big annual conventions like Gallifrey One, with merchandising, panels and even a cabaret. For a moment, it was a pretty good time to be a fan...
I have been looking forward to this for 4 months since I first met you in Novembersaw the 3 doc and your love of Jon. Most enjoyable 20mins this year . you had the best experience of us all, in 83 we all knew what was coming the pr was everywhere. the chances of no one spoiling it where so big so well done everyone you had no idea and it was wonderful. Love and no spoiling. R 😎
it's so good to see you watching the classics Marie AND to get your views on the Dr who classic ERA IT CAN BE come very emotional when The Dr regenerates lstarted WATCHING Jon Pertwee when l was Young so I am with you all the Way God bless you and your family warren and ingrid mad Dr who fan Melbourne Australia 😎🇦🇺😎👽😎🇦🇺😎👽
There’s something wrong with my eyes! They’re leaking! Lol. First there is the new console room, not just the console there are other changes too although more subtle. Then it’s one surprise after another! I think one of the biggest surprises after the doctors is Susan as it had been such a long time but you can tell instantly. I was getting teary eyed watching your reaction to all of this but when you said, “I love you doctor!”, to the third doctor, I lost it. I know you’ve seen the rest so you already know that the surprises don’t end there, though I’ll talk of those later and not spoil things. I’m so hooked to your channel, it really feels like a shared experience not just watching someone you don’t know watch the telly, lol.
Didn't see that coming did you? Lol. Been waiting ages to get to this story and watch the emotional roller coaster ride it'll take you on. Grab those tissues, lots more to come. 😆
Lovely reaction to the 20th anniversary special. I remember when this first aired. If I remember correctly the BBC had a Doctor Who week (I could be wrong), I recall The Unearthly Child was shown as part of the anniversary.
Can’t wait to watch this in full when all parts are up! Shame it’s the original broadcast version, the 1995 special edition edit is better imo. Slightly better effects and some scenes are edited differently
0:07 - Did she break at all the returns? 6:12 - *SHE BROKE! SHE BROKE, LADELS AND GENTLESPOONS!* Since you're past this, I can reveal now, Marie-Clare that Tom Baker didn't return in a major role because he thought it was too soon after his departure for him to return.
It hurt me so much that 4 had such a limited role in this. I understand it was something to do with scheduling, but he had been The Doctor for seven of the previous ten years. It was such a big chunk of Who History to lose. Was wonderful to see him in the 50th mind!
ONE OF THE FUNNIEST THINGS IS SARAH DOING A BAD FALL DOWN THE HILL LIKE IN THE ANDROID INVASION AND SUSAN TWISTING HER ANKLE LIKE IN THE DALEK INVASION OF EARTH ALMOST AS IF THEY ARE TAKING THE MICHAEL ABOUT A CLICHE OF CLASSIC WHO
I've always found thst strange because the Doctor still had links to UNIT at least he did in Time Flight yet this guy seemed not to have a clue who the Doctor is.
To see this without having any idea going in that it was a special and not just a regular episode, or knowing the name, leads to a pretty fantastic reaction which is fun to watch! What I don't understand is HOW. How were you able to view this episode without knowing ANYTHING about it, not even the name, or even that it mightn't be "The King's Demons Part 3" or a continuation of Season 20? I mean, no streaming service I've used allows me to choose episodes of a series without choosing the season and the name. Just curious! In any event, it's impressive! :)

Not really a fan of this story.
I'm surprised Maire-Clare didn't die from shock when watching this one.
Peter Capaldi met Jon Pertwee on set in 1972. According to Sean, Jon was quite fond of Peter.
And Peter ran Jon's fanclub!
Another lil Troughton era cameo was the actor that played the Brigadier's replacement. David Saville. He played Lt. Carstaires in The War Games
Susan found grandfather again. They were reunited. It wasn't hot air that he said they would, it happened. Outstanding moment echoing back so far and dealing with the early show. A needed victory for the softer morally caring type of fans.
Eh????
I have absolutely no idea how you managed to watch this without so much as a hint of what was going to happen... but it was glorious!
It was the first story I watched all the way through.
My first too. VHS around 1995. I was two. Never looked back.
You don't need to talk a lot during this reaction, I'm enjoying seeing you with this expression on your face, 😮. I've been looking forward to you seeing this for a long, long time and I'm loving every minute of it!
‘Are they going to face something that was for their era?’
Well in the original script, the third Doctor was going to save Sarah-Jane Smith from a group of Autons, but it was cut for budgetary reasons.
I remember one time when Terrance Dicks was asked what he thought of Ainley's performance, and he mentioned that scene as one he liked.
Agreed. Anthony Ainley was always be THE Master to me.
Marie-Claire, your genuine surprise and obvious love for the past incarnations of the Doctor and his companions brings a joy to my heart and a tear to my eye. My favourite Anthony Ainley line” I may be seated “ gets me every time 😆
It's delivered brilliantly.
And we've all been waiting for this one... 🙂
So glad it wasn't spoiled.
This is why I said watch K9 and company before you got here because by this point Sarah has K-9
Brig was supposed to be with Pertwee
Sarah was supposed to Tom
But as Tom didn’t want to return so soon they used footage from Shada the one that got cancelled to the strikes in season 17. And therefore they bumped Brig and and Sarah up a Doctor

Can't tell you how long I've been waiting for this after The Three Doctors! Great reaction as always, can't wait for part 2!
Same here when she watched The Three Doctors I thought she'll love the Five Doctors. Seems like I was right.
Looking forward to this, have been for ages! Hope nothing spoiled it for you.

Omg Marie-Clare. Rewatching this. You poor sweet thing. It’s so touching. Your whole series of reactions is a treasure and I’ve seen em all!
There’s going to be tears, yours and mine! Lol

I remember watching this when it was first broadcast. Superb story. And it’s fun for me to watch someone watching it for the first time.
The Five Doctors is just a thoroughly enjoyable watch. There's so much thrown into the mix but it works. :)
Aw what a lovely surprise for you. This was one of my earlier who stories on VHS and a classic without a doubt. One of my favourites for sure.
Thank you so much! What an amazing 18th birthday present!

Been waiting ages for your reaction on this story, it was just brilliant seeing all the doctors again. Plus past companions. In the original script the third doctor and Sarah would come across a village full of Autons.
WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL, you've brought joy to my day Marie-Claire, just the reaction I was hoping for and expecting 🤣🤣🤣🤗🤗🤗
Good day to post it, as it will be exactly 39 years since studio recording for this story was completed.
... in which Marie-Clare spontaneously combusts!
I've been waiting for this for a long time! One of my favorites!
SO EXCITED for this one! Enjoy, Marie-Clare! :)
The Brigadier is on Gallifrey! And Sarah finally gets to go there too!
I can't speak for the wider country, but I recall the Radio Times - with its now iconic cover of the Five Doctors surrounding the Tomb of Rassilon - being passed around at school. Welcome to the 20th Anniversary special, Marie-Clare! Enjoy the waves of nostalgia!
I can’t wait, I’m so glad I have the day off so I can prepare for this reaction
Me too
Seriously? I'd love to know how you "prepare" to watch a UA-cam video!!! 🙄
Still gets me excited ever since I first saw it back in the day! :)
Oh darl.
Your reactions are beautiful. I watched in the 1980s and was excited as you are now. Good on ya .
A beautiful reaction!
Wish I could time travel to 2 days time 😃
This is another one on my top stories list. I love the Five Doctors. Such a great anniversary story!
Just adored your reaction and I cried with you
4:18 - The words that immediately came to mind when you say this... "Great balls of fire!"
Great four doctors together end of this season was the 20th anniversary special and was a 10 out of 10
This is the one we've all been waiting for T minus 8 minutes...
We saw this on 11/23/1983 in the U.S. I was 13 and watched it at my Grandma’s house near Chicago. 💙
Crazy how these days most people probably don't know what a betamax even is!
@@GreatHealer. My friend found one at the local tip shop along with tapes, it had the Goodies, The Young Ones and Doctor Who it was a great find!
Me too , we had this on Betamax , wore the tape out , then we got VHS the first tape l got was the five doctors
Wow! That WAS a great find! Got them all on dvd...splendid series, all of them...to misquote the Brigadier..☺
We played it at least once a day during the week and about three times a day at weekends...lol 😂
I too love the third Dr Marie Claire. Been awhile since I saw this one. One story that had a lot of surprises.
I have been looking forward to this reaction for months! 😄
One of not only your best reactions. One of the best on UA-cam.
I always adore your genuine love and emotion at seeing all your old favourites again 💕 looking forward to the next part 😊
I've been looking forward to this reaction and it didn't disappoint! 😊😊
Love the countdown!
it's so good to see you watching the classics Marie AND to get your views on the Dr who classic ERA IT CAN BE come very emotional when The Dr regenerates lstarted WATCHING Jon Pertwee when l was Young so I am with you all the Way God bless you and your family warren and ingrid mad Dr who fan Melbourne Australia 😎🇦🇺😎👽😎🇦🇺😎👽
What a mind blower The Five Doctors 20th Anniversary story was! 😂😎
I LOVE your love for Jon Pertwee!
Broadcast November 23, 1983 (in the US) and November 25, 1983 (in the UK). I still have my VHS...
LOVING THIS reaction GOLD so worth the wait
Have been waiting for this one since you started the Fifth Doctor era! Was hoping nothing major was spoiled for you, and glad to see it wasn't.
8:00 Rare for K-9 to refer to the Doctor as _Doctor._
Lovely reaction ... so glad you weren't prepared. You may recognise some of these clips from The Name Of The Doctor.
Ahhh it wont play! It wont playyy! This is going to be a rollercoaster of emotions. How many parts is your’e reaction to the five doctors made up of?
4 :)
@@MarieClaresWorld cool, and are you going to try upload each part day after day?
Oooh, I can't wait!
Remember this was transmissited during children in need In 1983 x
Can’t wait to watch this in full when all parts are up! Shame it’s the original broadcast version, the 1995 special edition edit is better imo. Slightly better effects and some scenes are edited differently
Yeah. Hopefully at the end of her Classic Who run she can see the special edition version and compare the two.
My favourite part is when Sarah-Jane tries to slow the cybermen down by throwing a rock, when she says "missed" makes me laugh every time
@@glenngill8716 then the doctor manages to throw a laso rope across a cliff to hook onto the top of the tower 😂
And here we are. The 20th anniversary, The Five Doctors
Just love you're reactions marie❤
My first classic story
What a way to start!
@@GreatHealer. yeah definitely
Followed by talons of weng chiang
0:07 - Did she break at all the returns?
6:12 - *SHE BROKE! SHE BROKE, LADELS AND GENTLESPOONS!*
Since you're past this, I can reveal now, Marie-Clare that Tom Baker didn't return in a major role because he thought it was too soon after his departure for him to return.
Ooh! You ended with a cliffhanger!
Will Marie see the title before she finishes the episode?
Will the Doctor meet up?
Tune in next time!
"Hello Sarah Jane."
Been looking forward to seeing your reaction to this since The Three Doctors.
6:19 Marie-Clare's over-dozing on an old-Doctor-binge!
It hurt me so much that 4 had such a limited role in this. I understand it was something to do with scheduling, but he had been The Doctor for seven of the previous ten years. It was such a big chunk of Who History to lose. Was wonderful to see him in the 50th mind!
It's sad, but I think Baker didn't want to return so soon after he left from the show. And I don't think he and the producer were exactly buddies.
I think Tom Baker also like Eccleston considers The Fourth Doctor a one man band as well.
@@joshuajoshua2732 he didn’t want to return so soon
ONE OF THE FUNNIEST THINGS IS SARAH DOING A BAD FALL DOWN THE HILL LIKE IN THE ANDROID INVASION AND SUSAN TWISTING HER ANKLE LIKE IN THE DALEK INVASION OF EARTH ALMOST AS IF THEY ARE TAKING THE MICHAEL ABOUT A CLICHE OF CLASSIC WHO
The Five Doctors is my favorite anniversary episode.
Apparently, the new commander of UNIT was never briefed about the Doctor.
