Conan is so acutely aware that this is this guy's first big role and big interview that he crafts his questions very specifically. Conan is the top of his class.
Absolutely top. I was gonna say, he carried this interview obviously. It was the actor’s first. Yet Conan is gracious and keeps the conversation going smoothly. People can say “well that’s his job” but nope, not everyone can make it look effortless like Coco.
It’s incredible how well he transformed into that role. He looked so viciously angry and reckless in the movie and in real life he’s all smiles and complete gratitude for the role. That’s a great actor and he seems like a great person

Honestly, any big name actor could have played Captain Phillips. But this guy, and the other pirates , made the movie what it is. They were phenomenal, and incredibly believable. Things would not have turned out as well without them.
Manmelt I agree with you that the movie would not have turned out as well without Abdi and the other pirate actors but I hugely disagree that anyone would have been as emotionally invested as they were when watching if it hadn't been for Tom Hanks - he is definitely not an exchangeable actor.
As an actor myself so can tell you the reason he was good is because he wasn't even acting. He was so thrown into the fire he was overwhelmed and those emotions made it seem like a reality experience. I can guarantee you if he gets a non Somali pirate role he will be mediocre and that's a stretch. I like the guy don't get me wrong. On the other hand his angry friend was incredible. He was good. The taller angrier guy was better. That's just fact.
ToeUp FromTheFlowUp Everyone's opinion is important, however, I can't agree with you that the taller, angrier pirate (Faysal Ahmed) was better than Barkhad. I thought all the Somali actors did an outstanding job but Barkhad really was quite terrific. He gave the role a complexity and vulnerability and I sure hope he is more than mediocre in any future roles that he has - I guess we will just have to wait and see. As far as Faysal Ahmed goes, if I had to pick a weak link in the Somali performances, it would be his. He started off high-pitched and incredibly angry and had no where to go but up - heading towards the over-the-top territory. There didn't seem to be as much complexity or nuance to his performance compared to Barkhad's. Don't get me wrong, I still think he was very effective and I really hope he gets some good roles too, but, to me, Barkhad was the standout. That's just my fact.

The biggest compliment I can pay Barkhad Abdi is that it didn’t even seem like he was acting. He was real. The way he spoke, the way he stood, the way he ruffled his beard after first seeing Tom as Captain Phillips…. It was all completely natural seeming so much so that it just felt like he’d jumped on the movie set as a real life pirate and got on with it. Absolutely incredible.
It’s weird looking at him in Conan, his acting felt so real. Like I was scared of him for real. And now he’s sitting here cracking jokes on live tv. Great actor.
