Thank you very much. This helped me to make shadows in landscapes and on models. I don't know how could i improve my pictures in SFM even more without your tutorial.
actually, having to make one can free you up a bit. like that map, that sun is there all the time, and can even be seen if you change the skybox. So if you want to use that map for a midday scene you have to find stuff to put in the way, or shoot from different angles, otherwise you end up with a dog sun in the scene. and even worse if trying to do a night scene.
Oh my god, thank you for this tutorial!!! I have looked so much just to find a good tutorial on how the hell to do volumetrics, and a lot of them act like you should already know. Thank you sooo much.
Fantastic tutorial. But one question! I'm not getting any shadows for the trees itself? I followed the tutorial, except for the model i used. I used the Huge pinetree model, the one that looks a bit more cartoony.
Sometimes you just have to mess with the settings mentioned to get it to appear. Be sure the light has shadows enabled (it is by default). Also, the lighting in the map may cause shadows to be harder to pick out as well.
This is a very good tutorial.. I tried creating a sun, and it actually works, the problem is I get high reflections from the models, so they look way too bright D:
You could play with the texture files to reduce it a bit, but is mainly a problem with having brightly-colored equines. What I do is turn down the sunlight and add secondary and tertiary lights around the model to light is separately. Adds a lot of work, but has a nice effect.
Argodaemon I don't know how to edit texture, so I wouldn't go on that.. I think I should search how to though, it could help.. Adding other lights could work, the problem is I don't know if my computer can handle it, since it has a quite bad video card (integrated Intel) so I get low fps with lots of lights, but I think disabling shadows might help.. I'll try those solutions :) It may require more time as you said, even if I'm just doing a simple image and not a video, but I'm having fun making it.. And your tutorials help a lot, thanks :D
Set up the lights last. Until then, right-click the viewport and select "Enable Lights". This will disable any dynamic lighting and make everything max lit. This can help increase performance on lower-end machines while working. When it is time to render or work with lighting, you can do the same to turn them back on. Using the eye icon next to a light can help as well by turning on and off specific lights. This won't help on render, but at least give you a bit more FPS while working.
Argodaemon I usually disable Ambient Occlusion and the other effects in the rendering settings, and if needed also lights.. That way I get like.. 15-20FPS if I'm using one single viewport and it's way more easy to do stuff. My computer isn't so good, but hey, an i3 2.3GHz dual core with 4GB of ram at less than 200€, it's not so bad put in that way
When I make a sun or any light source I don't get shadows from anything (Trees, Pony models). the only shadows I get are from objects that are part of the map. What am I doing wrong.
I know this video is kinda dated, but when I load the map you used, the built-in sun is just BLASTING light. How did you get the map to be dim when you turned off your light?
Argodaemon While the video is being played, the shadows appear. When the engine is given time to process, the shadows on the models remain, but shadows cast from things in the world no longer appear.
Then you should save constantly in between adding important parts for the scene by pressing "ctrl" then the "s" key. That way if it crashes, you'll be able to just re add the small things.
Dennis Nesterenko Lighting and particles have a bad relationship. Especially when using 3D models, they can flicker between lighting and not. I haven't been able to find out how to fix it.

Hi, I probably have a stupid or quite noob question, but I was away from sfm for some time, and forgot one thing. So, my question is - how to hide wireframe which comes from camera and/or any light??? just how to switch it on/off? Thank you to anyone who can answer) P.S. I mean white wireframe which can help you see angle of light or camera. How to switch it on/off???
You have to insure that Scene Heirarchy is turned on in the Animation Set Editor (ASE). Right click on a blank area of the ASE and insure it is toggled (bottom of the dropdown. From there, you can right click any object in the ASE and the option will pop up for creating a dag for it.
9 Year old video, here I am looking for this exact thing.
Thank you so much, never leave

as much as i hate to learn from bronyshit, i have to admit this is a really good tutorial. thanks man.
It was 2013. That's when that shit was popular, no one cares about bronies anymore bro lol
Men really you make all your animations look so beutiful
Awesome and useful tutorial like always! Thank you very much!

This is really cool. Thanks for uploading these videos, I think it's interesting to see how it works. :D
This also can work with the moon too if you just change the color to white
Thank you.
Ah thanks, I've been waiting for this :p
Thank you once again!
great tutorial, but i how do you make the light cover the whole map?
Amo muito voce Flutter.

Mornin' neighbor.
lol dude,u explain way too slow
Those trees are particles right, how do you get particle spams to react to light?
E pra isso mesmo você conseguiu libertar a Derpy que estava dentro do dragão.
can the good tutorials not have ponies?
Deal with it lol

hi again, how do i get rid of the original sun?
Is there any way how to make sun rays?
Not to my knowledge. There are particles for sun rays, though. You'll be able to find one.
You can always make extra lights to make the rays
what's about photoshop?
How long have you been animating for? If you don't mind me asking. I assume you've studied this.
Guess he did mind you asking.

hey where did you get that dragon?? Pls leave me a link because I can't find any from Workshop
It was in a Skyrim pack I downloaded long ago off SFMBox, but that site is down now, so am unsure where you can get it now. :(
Argodaemon oh :( well thanks anyway for responding and your turorials have helped me a lot
uhh, the shadow filtersize still won't working on me
i still can't create a shadow.. :\
can you tell how to put things on pony? like bracelet, armor and ect
***** ah, right! I noticed, thank you!
My shadows won’t work (I’ve got snipers van in a scene and the sun isn’t casting it’s shadow :( )
My shadows don't even show up in the final render, but they show up while I edit. IS there any way to fix this?
That's not much to go off of. Are the shadows there when viewed from the Clip Editor and the engine is given time to process the AO and post effects?
Argodaemon While the video is being played, the shadows appear. When the engine is given time to process, the shadows on the models remain, but shadows cast from things in the world no longer appear.

you seem to be able to go past the preset values of maxdistance and farzatten. but i cant turn them up higher or else they bug out.
