Jodi, I bought the ruler a couple of weeks ago and was feeling very intimidated. I’m a “not so confident “ beginner, and decided to get out some scraps and just do it. My first one turned out perfect, to the exact size I wanted. Couldn’t believe it. I feel very accomplished and want to thank you for your great product and tutorial. Feels like I’m at the start of a fun and interesting journey.
My mom took you class a decade ago or more...and never finished. I am completing her UFOs. Thanks for having so many videos to help me get this finished.
haha I know. We have been around over 35 years and have attended most all events nationwide. Now, we do mostly online teaching. Go to the top of www.squareinasquare.com and sign up on our email list for other videos. Thanks for watching. You will love it!
FYI: For those of you looking for a demo once you get all sides on your square - see video: "Jodi Gives You Options", May 28, 2016. She demonstrates the ruler and the different blocks (flying geese, half sq. triangles....)
Jodi Barrow's other videos (sequels?) showing the different options are neatly organized in her playlists. Just click on her photo/name to be directed to her UA-cam channel 👍🏻😃 then click on Playlists and scroll down to the one you want to see!
Very interesting! Very good demonstration! But, it seems like you stopped mid-way in making the block. It would be great to see the completion of the block and usage of this square in a square ruler......is there a sequel? I am glad I found your site. Thank you!
Susan, yes this video was designed to show you how to cut the "basic square" - this is how it all starts and then once you have the basic square, you trim to create the "Option" that you want. One video to watch that would be good is Jodi Gives you Options, from May 28, 2016. Thanks for watching. Let me know if you have questions; it is an easy system to learn and with so many things you can do, it allows you to use just one system for all of your triangle units.
thank you Jodi for your technique with your ruler. i bought it and the books at paducah this yr. came over all the way from Tasmania Australia. can you give me the measurement for a flying geese for your ruler with a rectangle 2 1/2× 1 1/2 and 2 x 1 1/4. these measurements are for the old technique. thank you for your help as i use flying geese alot in my quilts. your videos are very informative
Okay great, I can help you on that. Go to your Reference book, Volume 1 on page 34 and look for the Option 3 flying geese chart on the top center of the page. The very first column asks you for the sewn size of the flying geese that you are looking for. I can tell by your measurements that you are giving me the "cut" size of the flying geese. So the first one you need is a 1" x 2" sewn flying goose which is the very first one on the chart. The second one is 3/4" x 1 1/2" which is very small and not on the chart. When it is not on the chart, go back to page 17 for the Flying Geese info and use the Magic Math. When I draw on graph paper the "sewn size" I can get the measurements. The cut size of your center square is 1 3/4" and the strip width is 1" - because both of these are very tiny, the size can be greatly affected by your seam allowance. I would do some practice squares so that I could get the exact size. Your center square may have to slightly increase or decreased based on your seam allowance (PPM = personal private measurements). If you need more help or any other questions, email info@squareinasquare.com - here is another video that would be good to watch on flying geese - ua-cam.com/video/zru64-igybg/v-deo.html - thanks, Jodi
