SEND IT! Cantaloupe vs Civil War 1838 24lbs Coehorn Mortar Fire

- At the range with Battery I at Ahlman's Shooter Round up even in Morristown Minn
Range required adjustment in the size of the powder charge; the 24-pounder version could theoretically fire a 17" shell up to 1,200 yards. It generally employed a paper fuse with a known burn rate and a hollow conical wooden plug.

I love the way it rings when being loaded and fired. Sounds like freedom!
I noticed the "ring" as well ... I don't hear this when firing cannon. THANKS pard for the comment hope you and yours are doing well.
@@1stminnsharpshooters341 doin' just fine. Gonna enjoy the weekend and catch up on things around the house that need to be done. I might shoot some footage this weekend, but I really need to edit between workin' on the house. Weather should be good all weekend. I hope you and yours get to enjoy the weekend as well.
Looks like a fun piece. This reinforces my need for a 12-pounder mountain howitzer😊
lots of smiles ... great time. thanks Pard for the comment
Be the first kid on your block to get a live fire howitzer!
Cool Video Pard. I'm surprised that they didn't disintegrate on the way out.
I wondered the same but did not see any evidence of this .. the melons were frozen very solid... perhaps now just a tasty treat for any fish
I gotta see what I can fit in my 12lb Coehorn!!! I've seen some folks do pumpkins so that might what we try in October haha.
our group is also searching for alternatives or better projectiles... we would like to shoot this in another location but the shooing range is much smaller. Let us know what you come up with and thanks for the comment.
TONS of fun at the range with Battery I firing the groups Civil War 24 pound Mortar - using Frozen Cantaloup and launching these ~500Yards into a lake. Here's your personal invite, pard, to follow our group at facebook.com/1St.Minn.Sharpshooters/
Send it! wounder what a full charge of 11OZ would do... shred the Frozen Cantaloupe
The range should increase as well
I was one of the guys in this video. Won't say which one 😉
But a full combat charge would send that iron ball quite a ways for being what was considered the light mortar of the time
@@sgtstedanko7186 thanks SGT for your service ... and of course for having a bit of fun out with our group. As you can guess, using a reduced gun powder load and the 1800 era mortar likely a lot less range than modern. Thanks pard for the comment and sending you a personal invite to follow along with our group.
Loved it hope to see more where is this
Hey Pard. This "event' was at a public gun show called Ahlmands shooter round up located in Minnesota
Nice glade to see more videos laughed so hard when I watched the girl hit it in like a bat
That looks like ton of fun :)
it was pard .. we will be back at this same event next year.
That's AWESOME! Woo Hoo!
thanks pard! tons of fun.
If I had the honor to fire that weapon, right before I pull the string, I’ll scream, “SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!!”
I do get the movie reference pard! thanks for the comment. --LT
Looks so much fun 😊
it was pard! what you can't get a feel for on the video is the shock wave when the mortar is fired. THANKS pard for the comment. --LT
We shall insult the enemy by firing these cantaloupe at them…
too funny pard. hope you are doing well.
@@1stminnsharpshooters341 doing alright… yesterday mom’s treatment for cancer would’ve ended. But I’m enjoying myself ever since. We’ve both have gone and had breakfast, have fun down town, visit the Fort Harrison Military Museum numerous times… but sadly dads death anniversary is coming up on the 4th
I have shot at fresh watermelons and cantaloupe at the local range with 223, 308, 45-70 and .50 BMG, but this looks like it just might be satisfying as well!
🍉💥☄️🍈💥☄️🍍💥☄️😈👍
yes sir .. great time and sure to put a smile on your face. thanks pard for the comment. --LT
i love the frozen Munition lol what a fun lol
Bonus is being environmentally friendly. Thanks pard for the comment
hell yeah
you have good taste sir! thanks for the comment
Did you make your own fuses? How? What was the hang time?
good question pard! The "fuses" are called friction primers - and we purchase these. It would be really neat to make these and would be interested in anyone thats attempted this process. Here and example pace to purchase these at empirecannons.com/shop/ols/products/friction-primer-100-pack
hang time: I don't have any real measurements but best guess is that time delay when the friction primer ignites and the main powder charge burns is ~1second - from the video we can see many examples of this. On occasion, I've seen a ~2 second "hang". Welcome others observations or experiences pards. --LT
Epic
thanks pard! fun time for sure.
