I adore that this is from the perspective of someone within the healthcare system
You can google it. I dont think she's with the American Healthcare system. She didn't even go to med school
@@arianajohnson8454 what I mean is that, while Penelope Scott is not a medical professional, she's emulating the perspective of someone who is. It's a common thing for singers to do (for example, Bohemian Rhapsody is a song about a kid who ends up murdering a bunch of gangsters, but Freddie Mercury never actually killed anyone), but I personally find it especially powerful here
@@vexhutton8940oh ok
Personally it sounds like she's talking to someone as they slowly pass away, "tell me faster cause' your running out of time" and the way the end is it fades away with a now added organ wich is normally a sign of death or funerals, Im assuming the question asked was something like "why'd you become a doctor" and it sparks the chorus.
That and I feel the person so dieing because of a lack of money. Ie. They had cancer but couldn't afford kemo. Or needed a surgery they couldn't afford ect.
Note all the talk about the "corporate pricks" the doctor is lamenting to this person about how he wanted to help save people yet his whole Career is just feeding money into the pockets of the rich and watching the poor suffer.
Like the beginning the doctor saw an old man dead on the road and became a doctor to help only to realize they're now just participating in a system that cause that old man to die alone on the streets in the first place.

Thank u kaito pfp
Agreed sir kaito pfp
This song is such a serious bop it’s not even funny
I'm not American, but I can't express how sad this song makes me. At the end of the sing, in my mind there are just images of people who are in pain but can't afford help. I'm so mad because doctors try to help, but can't come to the patients because of the fuc*ed up system. It could be better, I've seen it better but for some reason, life of a human has to be gambled even if it means death.
Yeah. Ambulance costs are fucking ridiculous too, if you can take an uber then you do it because you don't want to pay over a thousand dollars for a ride to the hospital.
@@jequirity1 Tf? What the actual fu*k is the American leadership thinking not prioritising health of their people?! They're literally holding the country together. That's like expecting your horse to gallop without feeding it.
As an american, i can astest that that healthcare costs are gone to shit. my mother broke her ankle once, and we had to drive her to the hospital, then wait 4 hours, because calling 911 letting her be taken by an ambulance would cost us a lifetime. everyone thinks america is great, but if you want to live a long life, it’s the last place you want to be.
I'm not American, but where I live the mental health system is pretty messed up. So many people can't afford the therapy they need, and in order to get government funded services you have to go on a two year wait list only to get 4-6 sessions which is nowhere near enough treatment for most people.
Pretty much everything in America is fucked, the healthcare, the judicial system, the schools, and how pricey places are getting. GET ME OUT OF HERE PLEASE-

how do non-Americans feel listening to this song? because our healthcare system is so disgustingly corrupt that this kinda hurts to listen to-
Non american here, I think its kinda disturbing since the first verse she found a dead man on the road and act like nothing happened. Also its kinda sad during the chorus since all she wanted to do is to help sick people, but ended up failing(in my perspective) cuz of all the bills they need to pay something like that
Its kinda complicated
tldr : its disturbing and sad yet catchy
Honestly it hurts for me to hear, as well. The song just expresses so much pain that I could never understand, and that’s a privilege I have to acknowledge. I can’t understand, but I do empathise and my heart goes out to all of you :( and my rage goes towards those who’re responsible for this fucking corruption
I listen to it because it vibes hard, tbh I don’t really care about what happens in America
@@gemstones2942 it’s really good you acknowledge you have a privilege and it’s obvious you’re trying to help others! You seem to be a good ally for disabled people and we can’t thank you enough considering that’s all you can really do. Thank you for continuing to help us :)
I'm non-American and even tho I don't experience it I emphasise with Americans, especially the ones that can't afford to go to a doctor for something serious. In my mind, America is made for people who are filthy rich and want to get richer. I can't begin to imagine how hard can it be living with a medical difficulty in America if you can barely even pay for your basic needs.
I think that gen z relates to this because we are told we can do anything we want and then later all the truth is being revealed and so now we don't know what to do
We're told to be whoever we want and then the system doesn't allow us to. We're encouraged to reach out, speak out and ask for help but it's constantly denied. I'm so tired of old people leaving every problem to the kids and not even giving them a stick to fight with
@@lav_endermoon8819 ikr like if you can't be the one to help or give even a little bit of guidence before putting the whole damn world on our back don't even fucking talk about it
Can we please just talk about how beautiful the last part is? I think it's one of the best parts of the song. (2:50)

I passed by a local hospital when this started playing and realized how much it reflects my life. That hospital was run down and old and i’m assuming super expensive because no one was ever in or out of it. (Which is weird especially since Covid was bad here) It made me think about how our important things like how schools and hospitals are underfunded and parks and streets are dirty, while they’re building new apartments and fast food places right next door. It also reminded me about how much I wanted to become a doctor when I was little. I just thought I grew out of that phase, but realized I probably was discouraged due to the corruption and the stress of being perfect in med school.

"People liked me back then, what can I say" hahahah I think we can all relate
What I think of that line is that people liked you back then because you didn't speak for yourself always doing what they tell you to do. But you even decide to choose your own paths and dreams they are disappointed. That's what I'm getting from this.

That moment when you go into a career field with a genuine passion for it and thinking "I'm gonna be different than everyone else I'm gonna devote so much time to helping people and make the world just a little bit better" cue starfish story.
Then you realize almost 4 years into it that everyone's an argumentative asshole that doesn't care about whatever issue they're talking about and is just spewing out their own opinions without fact-checking and just cherry-picking info to suit their own narrative.
And then you realize that you are exactly like them and are a pos too for studying the same thing but you still have a little bit of love for it and people say you're really good at it so you keep working even as you fear you've become exactly the type of person you hate. After all you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
This was brought to you by a debate nerd that loves learning about everything that's going on in the world and what we can do to stop it but hates the toxic ass environment and is dreading the future cuz it's only gonna get worse from here.
If any other listeners know IdentityV, this song gives me hellish Doctor/Emily Dyer/Lydia Jones vibes and I love it, sincerely

European here. This song is really sad because from what I heard from Americans across the internet this is actually how their healthcare is. I just feel like I can't comprehend why is the healthcare so bad in America. I just wish it was better. It makes me cry to hear stories that some injured people screamed to not call an ambulance as they won't be able to afford it. Wth do you mean?! You shouldn't even pay for your own health! Feeling good should be for all people poor or rich.
American here. I legit have a permanently injured shoulder, a cavity, undiagnosed mental health issues, etc and we just accept "Oh. I guess that will just hurt forever now"
It's actually depressing and the idea of a Healthcare system that cares about you genuinely sounds like a fairytale
Obsessed with the fact the bgm sounds like circus/fair music

something i really like about is the small change from “i just think they should feel good while they’re alive.” to “i just think they should feel okay while they’re alive.” a detail seemingly most people miss but something that adds more substance to the song and represents lowering standards due to society caring less and less about making people better and just caring about making more money.

Penelope Scott - American Healthcare -
