    I may not ever reveal its true nature in my GH game, but the interpretation in my headcanon as DM is that it's a sort of super revenant. The Burach Empire has a long and bloody history, and the Beast is an amalgamation of countless vengeful souls wronged by the Empire. With the gods gone, nothing is left to prevent its rise. Given that the Beast is so specific to Burach, with specific effects for each province but not really seen outside of the Empire, it feels appropriate to tie its lore to the Empire for me. Even if the players never know why, it makes sense for it to be targeting Burach for a reason. In my version, the way it wanders is because it isn't one being, but countless restless souls together with no singular voice guiding it. Only a shared hatred of the Empire.
    When the party briefly encountered it at a great distance, half of them (the ones native to Burach) were driven to madness that required a greater restoration spell to undo. (Or at least, suppress enough for them to carry on their lives.) The party now has a psychic character in it, and I kind of hope when they go back to the Empire she's reckless enough to try and tap into the Beast's mind to try to understand what it is, because that will not end well for her.
    Any potential solution to dealing with the Beast long term will not be solved by fighting it directly, though I've toyed with ideas of having to gather the four lost holy relics of the Emperor and performing some sort of cleansing ritual.

    I cool way to show it in a lower level campaign is to have it be a rumor, then around level 5 the party see its moving towards a town that they're headed to, by the time they reach the town, mere moments after the monster appeared, the Beast is gone and left in its wake is mutated people, monsters and maddened villagers tearing the town apart.
    Mabe the party's long-term goal is to uncover the secret of the beast, or work with a powerful faction like the Thaumaturge to create a ritual to temporarily banish the beast, or at least purify the areas it has affected until a better solution is found. Maybe gathering the 4 Holy Artifacts that once belonged to the Emperor of Burach might be the only way to permanently banish the monster.

    Okay once the corruption system was brought up it got really terrifying and very chaotic, I love it! this is perfect for a one-shot or for an adventure were players love some scary, unpredictable daring things to happen.

    MYST, KILLER, MATT, JOHN, IF YOU GUYS ARE READING THIS STOP! SPOILERS FOR THE CAMPAIGN BELOW, I WARNED YOU, STAY OUT, GIT, GO ON, GET OUT OF HERE.
    Also for anyone about to click 'read all' I kinda put a small novel below, so uh apologies haha. It was too long for one comment so the follow up comment is in the replies.
    So I am currently running a Burach campaign that has the Beast as the final BBEG that has only really recently started to be shown as an enemy to the party, or at least I should say that the party has only just begun to realize that the Beast is going to be important. For what the Beast is I decided to take that into my own hands, to start with lets go back to the Gods End war (which in my world takes place approximately 550 years before our game). See when the gods went mad, it is true that Emperor Leopold I went mad and his madness had an effect on the gods, but it wasn't his own power that drove the gods mad. No, his maddness only attracted the attention of the gods greatest enemy, the Aether Kindred, specifically Pharazorthok. Pharazorthok was both intrigued by the thought that a single mortal could ever be driven to such madness without the influence of the Aether Kindred, and also saw an opportunity to toy with the pests that once tried to bite him and his kind. So Pharazorthok used Emperor Leopold I as a beacon of sort and corrupted the minds of the 4 gods Galt, Maligant, Ulmyr and Aurelia through their sacred treasures which are considered to be parts of their very being.
    Then of course we already know about the war that happened between the gods and how they were driven to absolute perfection by their own means, however it is the final battle that is of importance in this story. In their final clash the gods came to the conclusion that the only possible way to become perfect, was to become one. This thought is what allowed Aurelia to break free from her madness as the mere idea of multiple souls being merged went completely against her nature as a goddess of healing, protection and life. She attempted to persuade the other 3 gods to not go through with their plan, but it was too late. The gods Galt, Ulmry and Maligant merged into one, and their sacred treasures became the catalysts of their new being. The crown of Galt became a wreath of bone around their head, the sword of Maligant became the whip of flesh that is their tail, and the orb of Ulmyr became their eyes which could see all. The energy of 3 gods combining created a blast so powerful even the goddess Aurelia was unable to protect herself from harm as she was shattered in the blast, with pieces of her essence being scattered across the continent including her head, still concious, turning to stone and landing in Lake Osea. In a last ditch effort Aurelia hid her sacred treasure by launching it into the side of the mountain near Stehlenwald, hoping that one day someone worthy would be able to wear it.
    And so, the Beast was born.
    Without the addition of Aurelia, however, the Beast was infuriated, it was not complete, not perfect. No, not yet, it still needed it's heart, Aurelia. The Beast now roams the countryside in search of the one thing that its eye can no longer see, the divine presence and energy of a god, it searches for the remains of Aurelia so that it may still become perfect. And so it creates minions in which to do its bidding, and occasionally will create minions of higher power who are granted skills and abilities represented by one (or more) of the gods. If you find a creature with a crown of bone, beware of insidious machinations. If you find a creature who can see more than it should, beware of erratic magics. And if you find a creature with weapons of flesh, run as fast as you can.

      In my campaign the first mission I had the players go on as a party was to investigate the Hundekopf mine outside of the city of Stehlenwald which had gone silent and their families were worried. Upon arrival the party found out that the mine had in fact been taken over by a bunch of monsters that none of them had ever heard of, Gnolls. The party eventually figures out as they clear the cave that the mine wasn't taken over by an outside force, but that the Gnolls were the missing miners themselves which they figure out once they notice that there isn't a single non-gnoll corpes in the mine, and by finding some Gnoll who had been trapped as prisoners. The prisoners tell the group that one day while working the mines began to fill with a strange fog, and anyone who touched the fog began to transform until eventually it had gotten to everyone. They did mention a noise before the fog, but were too terrified to say much more on the subject (player rolled really low to try and coerce anything out of them). The noise was a ear shattering twisted elk scream, which may have hinted towards the party about the Beast if they had gotten that information. After the mine was secured (though 5 Gnolls managed to escape, making them a brand new race in my world) the party decides to rest, and for the first time ever QI-3T falls completely unconcious and he dreams. In this dream he is unable to speak, but he meets a beautiful woman in a white silk dress in the lush golden fields on a hill beside of sparkling blue lake. The dream is short but she tells him that they will meet again soon.
      One of my party members, our rogue QI-3T really wanted to play as a warforged for this campaign, and at first I wasn't really sure how to incorporate a warforged into this world, at first I thought maybe he could have come from one of the hidden undergroud sleep cities or Dreamer cities, but eventually asked if he was alright if his character came from a noble family, and if he was also willing to have a magical item that he could not unequip at the start of the game to which he said yes. And so, the 'son' of Archduke Ulrich Eisenherz was born. Ulrich is a noble, sure, but he is also a crafter, and artifcer at heart. He eventually created his greated machine, a human body made of metal, however he could not figure out a proper power source that could keep it going. Even any animating magics seemed unable to work for long periods of time. He eventually had an idea so crazy, so risky that he almost dared not do it, but his curiosity and hunger for innovation won. He took his creation to his own personal hidden workshop, an area that not even the Hearthkeepers church or the Emperor knows about. He took the relic found by his father hundreds of years ago, the breastplate of Auralia, and attached it to his creation. With a flash of light the machine became alive, as a soul was the perfect power source for his machine, and as such named them his son Cuznal Eisenherz. Later on Cuznal was asked to hide his name and face from the world, and so they named themselves QI-3T and took to hiding in the shadows and wearing cloaks to hide their body and face.
      Eventually the party is tasked to help a priest exorcize a mausoleum which has become haunted, as the head priest of the local town usually cleans the grounds once a year. The mausoleum was built for a hero by the name of Gallien the Invincible and his army who were once heralded for pushing back the Beasts army of monsters in the years following Gods End. After battling through waves of undead some strange creatures begin to infiltrate the mausoleum and the undead would turn their focus towards the infiltrating swarm. The party would eventually encounter the hero Galliens spirit who would invite them into his own realm to fight. The fight is a tough one, but the fight is strange as Gallien seems to keep calling the party strange names and saying that 'their lord holds no power here', and the party tries to reason with him but is almost wiped out in the process, but towards the end of the fight a large abominable spider-like creature with blue fur, the face of a hound with a split maw and the tail of a scorpion where the stinger is replaced with a flowery mouth (think the face of the demogorgon from Stranger Things) enters the realm and joins the fray. Once Gallien notices that the spider is fighting both Gallien and the party, he agrees to a temporary truce until the group is able to take out the spider. Once the spider is defeated the party is able to stop and talk with Gallien, who had figured that the group were agents of the Beast sent to steal a treasure which he and his people have been guarding for centuries, and is the reason why none of their bodies were given proper burial rites when put to rest. After realizing that the Beast and his minons now knows that the object they are looking for is here, and wanting to finally get some much needed rest, he takes the group to a hidden room beneath the mausoleum with statues of Gallien and his 6 other companions (and some of their magical gear that hadn't deteriorated with age). At the end of the room was a pedastal with a glowing white flame that was warm to the touch, and Gallien told them that this flame was the treasure he and his army were tasked with protecting even in death even though he wasn't entirely sure what the object was. The party has made speculations as to what this item is but of course don't know yet that it is in fact one of the essences of Auralia that had been scattered across the continent. With the essence in hand and a pact made to protect the essence and seek out a priestess of Auralia who may or may not be alive still, the priest the party came with exorcized the Hero and his army of undead which caused on the party members to die (don't worry they survived) and for QI-3T to go unconcious for the second time. This time he finds himself back again on the same hill by the lake before and finds the beautiful woman sitting in the grass before him. He is able to speak this time, though it is a feeling of raspiness that he has never felt before. He asks her her name, and she answers with Aurelia. She tells him a bit about his past, and about his chest piece that granted him his soul and also assures him that his friend isn't completely dead, and to warn his other friends before they bring harm to one of her loyal servants whom they blame for their disappearance. She also lets him know that she is unsure of the nature of the white flame that they had collected, but that it seemed strangely familiar for some reason. Finally she gives QI-3T an offer, to embrace some of the divine nature of his being. He accepts, and is granted his first level of his Seraph transformation.
      I realize now that I went on a whole tangent with this video, but I think part of me wanted to share with you guys what I had done so far with my own version of Etharis using the tools you guys have provided and was just excited to see you make a longer video about the Beast.

    Can confirm, hurrocks just tear your character to shreds on level 3, specially, when your DM has a habit of only using the stronger variant and exclusively using the multi attack action.

    Honestly Grim hollow is perfect for what I ran it for, a bloodborne themed campaign.
    I made the beast the big bad but not in the traditional sense, the characters were part of a guild of hunters that existed to hunt down the beast and its influence wherever it existed.
    Of course I made it the beast exactly like it says in the book is something beyond comprehension something that cannot be killed.
    Going on a Never Ending hunt against a beast that can never be killed, simply delaying the inevitable.
    Along the way having to fight countless horrifying creatures, colts that worship the beast, zealots who blame the hunters for the beast creation thinking that they had some part of it, and so many more.
    Whenever I had the beast appear it would always be in the shadows, the players are defending a town that's under attack by countless horrifying creatures and in the distance they see a single silhouette of a massive creature standing over the tryline watching them before disappearing and a Caprithron appears from the tree line.
    Things like that where it never fully reveals itself always from the shadows like characters might see it in their dreams, see it just over the horizon, or find traces of where it's been

    The beast is a force. Irresistible yet pliable it seeks not the ruin of the world but to enforce a grand change in individuals it sees as worthy of it's blessings or curses. To see its form is to look upon chaos and change it's self.

    Is there a stat block for the beast so it can be theoretically fought and killed? The idea of an indestructible monster that destroys everything is a bit too dark, and could turn players off.

  • @trndrd
    @trndrd Рік тому +3

    The writers of the book specifically said they don't want to release a stat block for the creature, because it would normalize the Great Beast. However, I find that silly, considering literal avatars of Gods have stat blocks.
    I know where they were going with it, it's a new book and character builds that do 2000 damage in a turn exist. In order to protect your big monster, you simply don't give a chance of a PC fighting it, but as I said, that's a silly excuse.

    Hey guys, would you comment on the OGL issue please?

  • @Craterfist
    @Craterfist 7 місяців тому +1

    This sounds entirely un-fun. We have stat blocks for physical incarnations of gods, we absolutely can and should be able to fight the Great Beast, even if it's incredibly difficult. The whole point is to have fun, it's not fun to just be told you have no choice in a cooperative game entirely revolving around personal and character choice.
