In my mind Wit almost certainly turned down a shard because he understood it's limitations. Perhaps better than the others, and valued his freedom above raw power. In many ways he actually has much more power than the vessels. He isn't tied to one world, he isn't tied to one line of action based on one emotion and he can collect minor powers from all of the shards. Just look at all the vessels that are already dead (Tanavast, Ati, Leras, Rayse, Uli Da and the 2 on elantris) and Wit is still around getting stronger (apart from that last chapter). I think he chose wisely.
@@slipping4415 yo! Man, thank you! I had missed that WoB so I looked it up. Thank you for coming back and responding. I’m bad about keeping up with those.
Hoid is honestly the most intriguing character in the entire cosmere tbh, dude has basically been apart of everything and we barely have any answers for anything about him. Can't wait for DragonSteel tbh,we'll get most of our answers hopefully in that book.
SPOILERS FOR WAY OF KINGS There is a conversation between Hoid and Dalinar in the Way of Kings that interests me a lot. Hoid asks Dalinar if he knows the word Adonalsium and says, "I wonder If you could do that to a man. Pull him apart emotion by emotion and piece it back together to create something new." I couldn't help think maybe Hoid wants to form the Adonalsium back together again by combining all the shards
Hmm, we don't know a ton about his motives but this could be his goal, but we also know he wanted odium to stay trapped on roshar and braise so I wonder why that is, maybe one day though if he does piece the shards together he'll take the adonalsium for himself and become the main villian? Who knows? But also maybe one of the shards is missing, because the most interesting thing in rhythm of war is the idea that honor is dead and the idea of anti stormlight, did it destroy the shard? Or just kill the dude holding it whose name I can't remember like what nightblood did to rayse? If it's destroyed then hoid can't piece them all together, so i'm so curious. And even more interesting, if the lights have opposites, do other forms of investiture have opposites as well, like is there an anti-breath? Maybe there will be some massive climax where the heroes have to try to destroy all the shards before hoid or someone else gets to them... crazy how deep this gets! I'm still reading some cosmere books, so I just started mistborn and one i finish all 6 books i'll read elantris, whitesand, and arcanum unbounded but i'm loving it so far!
I posted an idea like this just barely and then found your comment! I really do think there is something to the idea of the shards being unbalanced on their own and needing to be brought together.
@@ginganinja9935 I think Hoid WAS adonalsium--and as such I dont think he has an interest in becoming so again. There have been hints that brandon has dropped that suggest maybe adonlasium wanted to be shattered, I most assuredly think that this was the case and that Hoid was the entity itself. I would say we can gather from this that Hoid wanted to be unbound and that from that conversation Hoids idea is probably that adonalsium should be reforged but without him at the center of it. Hints that Hoid would be adonalsium: Hoid states he cant hurt living beings and cant eat meet because of some force that binds him. We see this in some sense with the independent shards who cannot break their own natures--merely supress it. If hoid was the original shard that bound the unviverse it would make sense that he cant kill parts of himself. Sanderson consistently states that "Hoid was present" at the shattering and intentionally stays vague in the sense to say that he was there during the "process". That level of vague dialog indicates to me that there must be a broader truth that the semantics of the question might inadvertently reveal if phrased specifically. Hypothetically if Hoid was Adonalsium you wouldn't be able to say much more than "he was present during the events" without revealing the nature of the truth itself. Hoid's orienting reflex: Hoid has a sixth sense that lets him know that he is in the right place at the right time, he cant control it, merely feel it. Sanderson has been pretty elusive with this but those are the rules presented. If hoid is adonalsium this would logically make perfect sense: if the shattering shaped the worlds and the universe at large, and Hoid was formerly adonalsium then he it stands to reason that he would be able to feel his way through the essence that was formerly himself.
@@quantumcroissant7870 Adonalsium once held all the dawnshards as they were used in the creation of the cosmere by Adonalsium originally. If Hoid is Adonalsium this isn't a contradiction--but rather--a clever misdirection by Sanderson.
Tfw you realize the origin of the entire Cosmere is just the JRPG me and my freinds kill god scenario "So, those who killed Adonalsium were a combined force, but a diverse group with equally diverse motives. Some wished for the power; others saw killing Adonalsium as the only good option left to them. Together they murdered a deity, and became divine
One thing to note is that all investiture back then was of Adonalsium. I think it is possible that adonalism was just investiture (all the investiture in the Cosmere) that then gained consiousness. A similar thing can happen to Shards if the power is simply left alone. Don't see why that couldn't have happened to Adonalsium. It also begs the question as to what its Intent looked like. Shards and combination of Shards have Intent, so I believe Adonalsium must have had one too that is a sum total of the Intent of all the Shards. Its power (the power of all Shards) is called the power(s) of creation. But that doesn't seem to be its Intent.
Adonalsium is kind of a theme for me. They took the monastic view of God which is adonalisum and made different versions of that view via the shattering, and so they kind of made it into a polytheist version of divinity, where there are different characteristics and avatars of God. Its seems like a conversation on religion within the text
Many of Sanderson's works usually have themes of religion in there, with him being interested in theology and being a theist himself, so I don't doubt he has plans for exploring those themes, yeah.
Adonalsium seems to be a type of Demiurge, a creator god "employed" by a greater power (in the Cosmere's case, the God Beyond) to create the physical universe. If true, Adonalsium ia thus seperate from the more transcend God Beyond, and thus more bound to time and space, as the Shards like Odium are.
This is the only time where Mormonism seems to come into play in the Cosmere. Iirc the "goal" of Mormonism is for people to become lesser Gods and "The" God will be "The God Beyond" to their creations. Idk if there is supposed to be a God beyond God to Mormons or not... I'm not a Mormon nor a Christian, but I'm not going to lie, it makes for an interesting story.
@@Dr_Andracca yes, makes sense when you think about it like that. Adonalsium is definitely not all knowing or all powerful otherwise he could not be killed, so he must be a lesser being. The one true God of the Cosmere is Sanderson himself. He's the author and creator of the cosmere.

In regards to Hoid not wanting a Shard. My thoughts are he wants the power as a whole. It seems that having 2 together doesn't improve anything however having all might. It might just give you stability instead of letting the power rule you. Hoid has been gathering investitures from most of the planets, so the only thing I can think is he's connecting himself to the powers so we can then eventually get them. Possibly but idk if they knew what would happen when the shattering first took place that they would get an attribute of god and it would rule them. That is why Odium is trying to destroy all other shards to be the only god. Hoid could've done the same. I honestly think it is more the idea of not being bound. Cosmere video exists Hoid: let me introduce myself. Love the content! Love hearing extra nuggets of info or theories on hoid(let's be honest, that's why we keep reading the books)
I’m re-reading mistborn era 1 and it’s got me comparing the power of the mistborn shards with those of stormlight archive. Do you think all the Shards received a matched amount of power at the shattering or that some were made stronger and some weaker? If so, would this be from the shattering itself or due to those who took up the shard? Maybe it’s just my recency bias but Ruin seems so much more powerful than the others.
Harmony explained that the power between their two shards(Ruin and Preservation) is equal, he only took the two because it gave him the power of creation which neither shard had one their own. Also while Vin was Preservation she stated multiple times that her and Ruin where equally matched, the only things they could do is stop each other, but they couldn't over power one another. As for the whole Atium business it was because Preservation put some of their power(an equal amount that Ruin put into Atium if I understand correctly) into humans via the Lerasium that created the Mistborn from the beginning.
Hey, great video! I really want a book focussed on hoid even if it’s in the style of the simolrilian (excuse my spelling). I still want the mystery to stay alive but it would be another amazing project for Sanderson to do once finished with the stormlight archie.

We know that Hoid was present at The Shattering...is it possible that he is what's left? Like the empty husk after all the primal emotions (shards) were stripped from him
Rhythm of War SPOILER: ... I'm paraphrasing, so if anyone can find the exact reference, please post it. In one of the discussions with Odium-Rayse, he says that Hoid was actually wise to not take up a shard, because a shard-holder is actually very limited in what they can do. Hoid isn't bound by oaths and can Worldhop for example.
How's Last Argument of Kings going? Are you planning to do a video on the trilogy as a whole? I keep checking in for an update since your Before They Are Hanged review.
5:50 That's interesting, there are four Dawnshards that created everything. A bit like our universe has 4 fundamental forces that discribe all interactions between particles.
This is the first video ive seen of yours and dude i loved it! Very informative and your passion for the series gets me excited to read more. My only suggestion is either turn down the background music or turn up your own voice a little. Both are soothing but all the way up i had a hard time hearing some things you said
Are the last couple shards listed (all the ones after ambition) hypothetical shards that could exist or are they confirmed throu WoB? I've never heard of them before
I'm not sure if this is a theory already, but what if to restore balance all of the shards will need to be combined again? Some of the slivers on their own will always be destructive, but all together are tempered with the other traits. Maybe Hoid didn't take a shard because he would need to combine them all again.
I believe Hoid does speak about people trying to put them all back together again but I can't remember where this happens. It may have been his conversation with Dalinar.

The name *must* come from the Hebrew “Adonai,” which translates as “Our Lord” (or “Our Master,” let’s not get bogged down). So either God, or a Gnostic Demiurge, etc.
Well hoid knew all of the original shards but RoW spoiler He didnt know TRavangian very well before taravangians ascension to godhood, neither did he know Sazed
It is an old version of almost a different story. Most of the story was already used in other books, primarily Stormlight. Like all of the Bridge 4/Kaladin stuff came from there. They are planning on selling it next year since it is mostly spoiler free at this point if you are up to date on all the cosmere books.
Adonalsium could not be the true God. A true God would not be able to be killed, as that God would be eternal, all powerful and all knowing. There would be no way to kill God. So therefore Adonalsium was probably some kind of lesser being who created some type of universe like maybe similar to a computer programmer who creates a simulated world.
I want to hear what your saying. But Your music is too loud, has too many peeks and is distracting, on top of the fact, you saound like your whispering this info to me while trying not to wake someone else sleeping in the room. Music with less peeks, turn down the music (or loss it, i'm not interested in you music choice I'm interested in what your saying), and speak clearer, would make me a subscriber.
Andonalsium does sound like a similar concept to the Crippled God from what synopsis I could find about Malazan(sidenote: they are both published by TOR) but the Cosmere(which is like 5+ separate book series each with their own unique magic systems, lore, worlds, etc. spread over 20+ books) has jack shit to do with Andonalsium so far. TLDR: The main audiobooks of the Cosmere are more than 2 weeks long combined(by the ones I own I got 377 hours or almost 16 days total), and I'm legitimately surprised this guy was able to talk about Adonalsium for even 7 minutes. Also I'll take this as a recommendation. If you're interested in the Cosmere(which I highly recommend), it wouldn't be a bad idea to start with Warbreaker which you can find for free on Brandon Sanderson's website.

Thank you! I'd love to say I do but I actually have no bloody idea.
Hoid's a legend Great vid, see ya in 20 years
Thanks for doing these
Keep doing cosmere lore loving the videos
Thanks, will do!
Interesting that the shards are aspects that Sanderson appreciates about himself
Cosmere video exists
Hoid: let me introduce myself.
Love the content! Love hearing extra nuggets of info or theories on hoid(let's be honest, that's why we keep reading the books)
😆
Thank you so much! That’s absolutely it :)
There must me a shard of justice....i think he/she would hit it well with nale allowing him to bend his oaths for he has found perfection.
Thank you this was helpful!
No problem! I'm glad :)
I’m sure some would be more powerful than others!
There will be a series on Hoid's background at some point. It was going to be a 7 book series, but now a trilogy.
@@CSPare_CChange I did not know that, thank you so much! You might have just made my day!
@@shannonvermeulen9111 ha, well it might be a decade or 2 before it happens. Finishing Stormlight, warbreaker sequel, Elantris sequel, sixth of dusk sequel, Mistborn era 3 & 4. Not sure when the Hoid trilogy will fit in.
@@CSPare_CChange I forgot to filter in that aspect but either or. The mystery is amazing and so long as I get tid-bits I’ll remain patient.
Oh snap thought I was up to date, be back in a week after I read Dawnshard
when you said that the vessels were influenced by the personalities, if you will, of the Shards, the specific term would be the Shard's Intent.
We know that Hoid was present at The Shattering...is it possible that he is what's left? Like the empty husk after all the primal emotions (shards) were stripped from him
Rhythm of War SPOILER:
...
I’m finishing it today and I’ll be doing a stream discussing the whole trilogy soon after.
5:50 That's interesting, there are four Dawnshards that created everything.
A bit like our universe has 4 fundamental forces that discribe all interactions between particles.
Great content mate
Thank you man
This is the first video ive seen of yours and dude i loved it! Very informative and your passion for the series gets me excited to read more.
My only suggestion is either turn down the background music or turn up your own voice a little. Both are soothing but all the way up i had a hard time hearing some things you said
Thank you mate!
I’m definitely still finding the balance of audio so thanks for the feedback :)
@@LostinDiscovery i understand that im going through some of your other vids love em man keep up the good work
Brill video man. Thanks.
Much appreciate dude, thank you!
u have videos on his maps. so who were the people. Did he create them as the first people.
Hey! Wonderful video!! Make a video about Mraize. In Stormlight, he and Hoid are the most mysterious
Thank you! I’d love to!
I think Hoid didn't take up a shard so he can lie and isn't bound by promises
I always thought Hoid was like a husk of Adonalsium.
Are the last couple shards listed (all the ones after ambition) hypothetical shards that could exist or are they confirmed throu WoB? I've never heard of them before
Confirmed through WoB
What is that first music?
So how do the dawnshards fit into this - they must pre-date the fracturing of Adonalsium so they are not part of Adonalsium?
I'm not sure if this is a theory already, but what if to restore balance all of the shards will need to be combined again? Some of the slivers on their own will always be destructive, but all together are tempered with the other traits.
Maybe Hoid didn't take a shard because he would need to combine them all again.
I believe Hoid does speak about people trying to put them all back together again but I can't remember where this happens. It may have been his conversation with Dalinar.
I always say it like Andolusium (An-dou-loo-si-um)
hunger games lore: distopic world but more advanced
cosmere lore:ua-cam.com/video/QN2HIRpO6p4/v-deo.html
Hey, good video as always. Have you considered saving them as podcasts? I have to admit I don’t care much for UA-cam.
Thanks man. I’ve considered it but that may be something for the future. I really enjoy the video production side of things.
Best place for long form SLA discussion is 17th Shard if you haven’t checked them out already :)
@@LostinDiscovery Ok, just discovered the 17th shard, and oh man, it’s massive! Thanks a lot! I kind of prefer your videos to over an hour long podcasts, as kids never let me listen to anything longer then 30 minutes. To my previous comment just wanted to add - I would chip in a couple of pounds if you’d had an account on patreon...
Does that mean the old man that made shoes that was killed was right? They are pieces of the universe experiencing itself?
Hoid is secretly a shard
See you in 20 years
The name *must* come from the Hebrew “Adonai,” which translates as “Our Lord” (or “Our Master,” let’s not get bogged down). So either God, or a Gnostic Demiurge, etc.
Well hoid knew all of the original shards but
RoW spoiler
He didnt know TRavangian very well before taravangians ascension to godhood, neither did he know Sazed
Seems no talks about who was powerful enough to kill Adonalsium
A copy of Dragon Steel is somewhere
It is an old version of almost a different story. Most of the story was already used in other books, primarily Stormlight. Like all of the Bridge 4/Kaladin stuff came from there. They are planning on selling it next year since it is mostly spoiler free at this point if you are up to date on all the cosmere books.
Is it known why Adonalsium was destroyed? Was it purely out of greed for power?
I don't think we have a definitive reason yet!
Odium is not evil, change my mind
Im done my handsome friend..
This is nitpicky, but technically not all shards were originally people! We know at least one is a dragon!
Fair point, thank you!
This sounds like a total Malazan rip off.
